glaceed/candied fruit for fruitcake?

I have a great fruitcake recipe that uses edible fruits, but I'm making some for my dad who loves the glaceed nasty plastic fruits you get in tubs at the grocery store.

Except my local store doesn't even have them this year. But maybe I could make my own and maybe they'd actually taste OK if I did. Recipes I've found online don't seem to have the potential for that bitterish taste. But honestly, I don't even know what's in those tubs. I think the red things were once cherries, but what were the green things or the yellow things?

Any tips on how to make my own plastic fruitcake fruit? Thanks!
