Trap for utility room drain needed?

I will be installing a water softener in the utility room in the garage. House is a slab foundation.

Current setup is on well water, with an aerobic septic system. There is a pressure tank opposite the water heater on the other wall.

Photo shows the current drain line next to the 80g electric water heater.

The drain line runs into the wall and looks as though it goes into the laundry room drain, which is the very next room. But of course I cannot see it.

The drain currently has a copper pipe from the relief valve on the water heater. The pvc T fitting is for the furnace drain, which comes down from the ceiling. The furnace is in the attic. I will need to do an air gap of some sort for the softener drain.

The drain pipe is a hacked off section of what looks to be 4" pvc with some sort of funnel thing glued into it. Not the most professional looking setup.

My question is, does this section of exposed drain need a trap?

It is always very musty smelling in that room, not in the garage, just in the utility closet. Nothing is leaking. So I am not sure if it is the drain or not.
