We adopted a "dumpee" over a year ago, named her Allie (short for alley cat). Quite frankly, she never shuts up. As soon as she sees you, she begins "talking". I tell people she's recounting her short life story, but isn't bright enough to understand she's just told it to the same person five times in one day.
You can even get her "talking", by getting her attention, and saying "meow" to her.
She does tend to keep my DD up @ night. Sits on her pillow and talks to her all night. But since DD is now 19, I tell her that's her problem LOL - Ellen

My parents have a female calico cat like that, she is nearly 9 yrs old and still a talker!! At nights they have to confine her to the basement, otherwise they would get no sleep!! Not only is she a talker but a kisser!! Loves to kiss you on the chin!! Nice during the day, not so nice at 0100, 0200, 0300 in the morning, lol!! They have given her numerous chances throughout the yrs to win her freedom at night from the basement, but to no avail, keeps talking and kissing!! lol

I wish there was something we could tell you but as you see from these posts there are some cats that are just born talkers! I have one whose meow is loud and screechy, but at least he sleeps through the night now. Your rescued cat has been through a lot of trauma and has only been with you a short time. He's still learning your habits and he will probably adapt to your sleeping patterns over time. Make sure you do not respond to him when he cries during the night!

My mom's cat is a "talker" and frankly, I don't know how she can stand it! LOL! He's loud too. There is nothing wrong with him and he has no traumatic past that is causing him to "talk"...he just does. I would suggest a set of ear plugs at night, you're gonna need them.

I can't stand talking cats. That would drive me up a wall. I have noticed that the abandoned kittens do seem to become more needy as a result. Some seem to just be born that way, but I've seen others that had successfully trained their human owners. I had a roommate who had two male cats. Every time they meowed, she came running. Even at 5:00am, she'd get out of bed to let them in or out. As a result they never shut up. In the week she went away on vacation, I managed to break them of the habit by ignoring them. As soon as she got back, it all reverted back. Point being, some cats can be taught...humans, not so much. Good luck.

We have 4 cats right now. And we've always had a least one "talker". At present, the chatty cat is Vera. She mews and chirps all the time. I love the little trills. Before Vera it was Bobby Lee who lead the chorus.

I love talking cats, but I've never had to endure the yowls of a Siamese! Our's emit shorter, quick mews and the adorable chirps/trills... you know, "Bbbrrrpp!".

I have a Siamese and 3 oriental shorthairs that might as well all be siamese. They are all talkers. I don't think there is anyway to shut them up, but I knew it going in and it doesnt bother me. I would much rather have them meowing in my ear than poking me in the eye while I am sleeping which is a habit of the oldest one if he needs more room. That drives me nuts.

You don't even have to meow to mine, if I just talk to them they talk back.

They also call each other from all over the house. Heaven for bid one wakes up alone and the other three are off sleeping somewhere else. The left out one will run around yelling till the "missing" cats are found. :)

My talker cat, Basil's, voice is not pleasant to hear. No cute little chirps, he really howls like an alley cat or a dog howling at the moon! I have noticed that he shuts up immediately when I howl back in the same tone of voice: he stares at me and scampers away in a huff. He also hates when I whistle the theme from the Andy Griffith show--it has high notes that make his ears twitch and he runs out of the room.

Can't tolerate dog barking, can't live without cat talk :-)

I have 4 kitties and the oldest one, a siamese, has a musical and gentle voice. I love listening to him. The only female is the really noisy one, an oriental, and when I walked into the humane association I could hear her in the basement talking/screaming. I followed that voice and didn't even LOOK at another cat. She talks/screams/chirps for no particular reason whenever it moves her. I like talky cats! This is another good reason to adopt adult cats. You should be able to tell if their talkers at the shelter.

My dogs aren't vocal. Only Katie speaks at all, and that happens when I ask 'what do you say'; she responds 'roo roo.'(Please or Thank you :-) Most greyhounds are very quiet and rarely bark.

Most of my cats aren't talkers. My first , a Siamese was a super talker and from then on some did and some don't. Of the ones I have today, Nellie is a talker especially if I talk to her and Annie was a squeeler when she was a kitten and still has a high pitch sound which belies her giant girth..Louie used to meow a lot but can't now..just does silent ones. I love the silent ones. Phoebe only meows as she's dragging a toy across the floor to me. My old cat Pumpkin did that as well .Of the 10 week old kittens, Henry meows all the time and Buster has never made a sound. Should that be a plus or minus in figuring out which to adopt??
