What do I do about my vocal cat?

I have a problem with my new kitten. I adopted Murdock about 2.5 months ago from a graduate student in our department that found him shivering next to a dumpster in her apartment complex. He has been to the vet and had all his shots and will be getting fixed in a couple of weeks. I am also having to spend a bunch of money to have one of his eyes removed (ruptured from some trauma before we found him). He is has recovered very well from a rough start and is a fast growing sweet cat. My only only problem is that he talks very loudly all the time. He meows when he is happy, sad, excited, mad, etc. It normally doesn't bother me, but when he does it in the middle of the night, then it gets a little annoying. Especially when we have guests over. Is there anything I can do? I know he meows just because he wants in our bedroom, but I started shutting him out when he started waking us up in the middle of the night meowing right in our face. At least now he is on the other side of the door.
