Teresa- You commented on the random effects of these two natural disasters. I don't see it that way. The destructive effects of a tornado are random. The destructive effects of an earthquake are not random. We live near the San Andreas Fault and the USGS has published a map that shows exactly what we can expect depending on where we live. The soil, the building materials... One living at the top of a high-rise building will feel a sway and the fellow at the bottom might not feel a thing. The unreinforced brick chimney will crumble. You are still comparing apples to oranges. Would you compare a tornado to a flood? (another natural disaster) One is random, the other is determined by elevation. Let it go. I will. -Babka

It was my guess that these small quakes were associated with the oil and gas industry. These can be caused by "fracking" and "water driving". The pratice of water drive has been used since about 1970 in Illinois and other places. When a field of well begin to dimish production and if these are in a well defined 'dome', it was found that if water was forced into the wells in the outer perimeter of the field, it would force what little remaining oil there was toward the central wells. It could extend the prodcutive life of a few wells by 5 to 10 years. A side benifit: It was a place to dump the waste water/brine from the producing wells. In Illinois, this practice has not caused any major earth movements. However, it has been documented that water drives in the Colorado oil fields were the cause of earthquakes. A geologist ran an experiment to show that the quakes could be turned on or off by activating or deactivating water drives. Thus, it was my hunch that fracking and/or water drives may be the driver of the swarm of small quakes in central Oklanoma. The longer duration quake in Menphis mentioned above was likely associated with the New Madrid fault zone. In 1811 - 1812, it produced three very large earthqaukes and many aftershocks, and likley was the largest ever released in the US over the last 300 years. That zone continues to shake to day. Reelfoot lake in Tennessee was created during those quakes. it is a slump zone depression that filled with ground water. The new Madrid quakes was instrumental in the rapid rise of steam boats on the Mississippi river and it tributaries, but that is another story.

Frostedc, I'm about 100 miles south east of Peoria, and about 60 miles north of epicenter now stated as Mt. Carmel, Illinois which is on the border of Indiana, just across Wabash river is Vincennes, IN. It appears not much structural damage reported from any of the state that felt it. The last report I heard- about 8:30 AM that it was revised from a 5.4 to a 5.2 on the Richter scale. Jan

Illinois earthquake?

The Illinois quake was all over the TV news in Milwaukee, WI this morning. The shake was felt in Milwaukee by a few souls who were up at that hour, the rest of us slept through it. I contacted a distant relative of mine in Decatur, IL, and he said he was awakend by it at 4:40 AM. Being in a groggy state, he reported that the window blinds were rattling in his bedroom, and he rolled over to sleep again. The next morning, he realized it had been the qauke that awakend him. I called my sister who lives south of Effingham, IL and she said that she was awakend by it. She lives in the countryside where it is very quiet and she reported it was "noisy". The surafce waves was shaking the trees and these made a noise similar to a wind front sweeping through a forest. She said their house was swaying a bit, that is, it was affecting her balance and the bed was scooting a bit. She also felt the second quake about 10:00 am and reported that one made a noise akin to a quarry blast or a cannon being fired in the distance. The noise was heard before the quake arrived. I also was in contact with an aquaintence whose house is only 3 miles from the epicenter. The quake awakened him, but in his semi-stupor condition imagined that his wife was having a nghtmare and promply went back to sleep. He reported pictures falling off the walls, pictures sitting on flat surfaces were knocked over, and several pieces of dinner ware were disturbed. The only damage to his house was a few displaced bricks in the chimney. Although, that part of Illinois has experienced earthqaukes in the past, it is not common, therefore, they were excitable and had plenty to talk about this morning. I experienced a quake ca 1952 when I lived in that region. That one was just one single jolt. I first heard it coming trough the trees just before it arrived. A wave of motion could be seen traveling through the forest. The trees were waving much like a wind gust blowing through tall grass, and the noise sounded like a wind front passing through the forest. Seismologists had stated this earthquake was associated with the New Madrid quake zone in Missouri, on the Mississippi River. However, pronouncements may change as they have more time to review and calculate the data. They were debating this morning whether or not the second shock was an aftershock or a second quake.

My oldest attends Vincennes University. He said that everyone was ordered from the dorms until.....still haven't got the whole story. I just home hope his "sad excuse for a frat house" didn't receive any damage (long story)
I'm working on my Master's Degree in Homeland Security/Disaster Mgmt. For a paper, I was going to interview some people I know in Southern Cal about their natural disasters. Seems like I can look closer to home now.
I usually wake up about 5:30 to go to work but I am off today. I must of have felt something because I woke up and I thought the dog was having a fit.
Indiana Homeland Security (where I worked for 15 years) is all over the television this morning (giving the usual lip service) (long story)

According to the "experts", the Midwest is due for "the big one" from the New Madrid Fault.

I am in south central Kentucky and it shook us out of bed this morning. Pretty freaky way to start your day. It was 4:37 cst so I was still in bed. It shook the bed pretty hard. My DD is a very sound sleeper and it woke her up and she came running into my room wondering if I had felt that. I sleep with a fan on so I didn't hear anything and I ask her if she heard anything and she said no. I told her it had to have been an earthquake. We turned on the police monitor and it said it was a quake. Very unusual for our area. I don't think I have ever felt one, but we are on the New Madrid Fault.

I'm in east central Illinois and we just had an aftershock that bobbled the ceiling fans for a few seconds and whole house creaked. I was awake when it hit at 4:38 AM or there abouts. It was very loud and scary. Didn't know immediately what it was, but didnt take long to realize it. I took cover in a doorway, but had no damage. The Terre Haute tv station (TH is abt 50 east of us said there is a theory that there is a fault 3 miles under the Wabash River, and believe this quake was not from New Madrid fault. It has now been downgraded from a 5.4 Richter scale to a 5.2 and epicenter came from 6 miles NW of Mt. Carmel, IL. The US Geological Survey has a great site and they show stats of people reporting feeling this quake from Iowa, IN, OH, WV, AR, IL, WI, NC, TN, GA, AL, & MI.

Pretty scary after the fact! Hope everybody ok. We are here.

they have been spewing on about the 'big one' in the midwest since a tiny earthquake happened in chicago during the late 80's or early 90's LOL. i was at Ed Devicks restaurant when that tiny one hit, we felt nothing because that's a roudy, loud place but all around the IN/IL lake michigan area it was felt. i think st louis had another mild earthquack sometime during the 90's also that fueled the 'big one' debate. we all live on plates so there's at best a 50-50 chance of something big and someplaces see alot more movement than the U.S. ~ liz
