Ikea Numerar Stainless Steel Effect Counter

I was hoping to order these laminate countertops for a kitchen remodel I'm doing in my duplex, and have just been told it's a discontined item (even though it's in their NEW 2010 Catalog. Sigh). Has anyone used the gray aluminum effect edge counters? I'm on a severe budget here, and need limited countertops - three sections - under six feet total. I had originally had my heart set on concrete, but way too expensive. I need something grey or steel in color. If anyone has suggestions, I'd much appreciate them.

What about actual stainless steel? I just read this post by Pioneer Woman about her stainless countertops and it's making me seriously consider it. And it seems pretty affordable if you can find a fabricator to do it for you.

We did the same for the counters flanking our rangetop that Pioneer Woman did for her stainless counters...Had a local sheet metal fabricator make them for us (DH did the underlayment and took it to the metal shop to be wrapped). They were $17/sq ft. I wish we'd gone with 16 gauge instead of 18, maybe, although they're holding up well after 2 years. Anyway, I'm saying that a little heavier gauge would have been a bit more expense.

The other thing I have to offer is that we wanted concrete counters, too. DH is capable, but we DIYed our whole house and time didn't allow that counter work. So the perimeter counters were designed to have the look and color. We made the counters thicker (2 1/4")for 2 reasons...1) so we could replace with concrete if we ever wanted, and 2) so that they resemble the heft of concrete counters...because, to be honest, the likelihood of ever ripping them out and doing the concrete is small. ;-) I chose a Pionite laminate (Moonlighting Papel) that was a slightly speckled light gray.

Formica has some brushed aluminum looking laminate, too. We used it in our boys' room in our last house for a kind of industrial look for their room.

Look in your yellow pages under heating for companies that make ductwork. Most of them stock stainless and copper, and have the tools needed to cut and shape it, generally charge just a fraction of the kitchen specialty supplies. You could do the wrap-around for the front edge yourself, but I'd at least find out what the Tin Shop would charge first. You could also do a molding of some type for the front edge, but wrapping the stainless would probably look nicer. No reason you can't make your own support if you are comfortable with that kind of work. I'd use a marine grade plywood so it doesn't de-laminate, make just the tiniest bit smaller than the adjoining counter so that the dimensions will match once the stainless skin is on. Better that the stainless is a little lower than a little higher, since the edge may turn out a bit sharp. Most stainless is heavy enough that you won't have to worry about the grain of the ply showing through, but try to use nice smooth wood just in case. I'd paint the bottom and sides of the support with primer and an exterior grade latex to help prevent water damage-- cheap insurance. Wouldn't paint where the stainless will rest, may effect adheasion. Once the support piece is as you want it, take it to the tin shop and ask them to make a skin for it. Would be wise to take it to a couple of different places since some places tend to price gouge for what they see as a needless luxury. I'd have the skin done so that it slips on like a glove, but I'd take it home and install the support, coat with a thin layer of something like liquid nails, and slip on the skin. I don't really think you'd need anything as demanding as contact cement for this sort of application, especially if the stainless is a heavy gauge.

Please post more pics when you do more to the kitchen! Can't wait to see what tile you choose! What style/colors are you thinking? Wish I could see your floor too - or just wider angle of kitchen. Am I being too demanding?! p.s. if you're comfortable saying, what part of Portlandia? ;) We're in the Lloyd Center area (Irvington). Here's our stainless after 2 years of being beaten up (14 gauge). Here is an excerpt from the Waterlox website... Simply brush on the mixture and let it dry-- wiping off is not required". Waterlox Original Tung Oil Finishes produce a slight "patina" or amber coloration that brings out the character of woods. Try finishing a test area before staining ÂYou may find that Waterlox alone makes your wood look so beautiful that youÂll want to forgo staining altogether. We normally suggest something like the original Minwax, Zar or Carver Tripp oil based stains. Does this help?

Have you considered zinc? Rotometals has all the supplies and some extremely helpful DIY videos. Zinc's been used in European kitchens for centuries. I strongly considered it but ultimately went with copper for a warmer color effect.

I realize this is a very old thread. I too was looking at the aluminum effect countertop from ikea, but I am having trouble finding photos of it actually in a kitchen. I think it is called Hallestad now. Just thought I would post and see if anyone has had any experience with it. Thanks
