Best candy thermometer?

I have a glass thermometer that I've had forever, but its sooooo hard to read. For the last several years I've been mostly using a big metal Taylor thermometer. But I recently noticed that all the black numbers/writing on it at the bottom are gone........which means whatever the numbers, etc., were made of, ended up in the candy somewhere along the way.
I was looking at a person making candy on You Tube, and her thermometer like mine was missing lettering too.
I would love to have one that I didn't have to squat down and constantly adjust my progressive lenses to see.
Any suggestions?

"Best" is pretty subjective - although the basic designs of candy/deep-fry thermometers haven't change all that much over the years - a glass tube or a long flat frame. If I needed to replace a candy thermometer, I'd opt for electronic. Something like the Maverick CT-03 Digital at the link below. Give me something that beeps at me, any day, over something I have to stare at with tiny or obscured print. Then again, it could be my trifocals, not the thermometer ;-).

When I'm making fudge I also use the soft ball test,but I'm not as good when it comes to had ball or crack stage. I have yet to make a single batch of peanut brittle successfully, no matter whether I use cold water or the thermometer. I use the frozen plate test for jelly. I used the thermometer when I first started making long cooked jams without commercial pectin, just to give me a clue of when I was getting close to jell stage. I can tell pretty much by the way the stuff looks now but if I'm trying to teach someone else to do it, I use the thermometer. However, I mostly use the thermometer when deep frying, to tell me when the oil is at 350 or 375 or whatever temperature I want to cook at. A Thermapen would be nice but the original poster said a "reasonably priced" thermometer and I don't think the $100 or so for a Thermapen is at all reasonable. They're nice, I know, but they're pricey! Annie

You might have the best luck on the Thermapen site. They're closing out the old model in favor of a new waterproof one, but I think the old model is just fine for kitchen use. I'm not planning to take it into the shower. Carol Here is a link that might be useful: Thermoworks

AH! What a simple test - thanks for the suggestion. I was simply floored when DH pulled one out to check the engine temp of a combine - Whaa?? When did you get that! I told him he needs to buy a mini torch now, so I can make Creme Brulee - alas, he is sticking with his large acetylene tanks.

Sue I store mine in a plastic bag in the freezer. I also use it once or twice a year (but I do like to eat it like candy sometimes and its good if your stomach is upset). Unfortunately, today when I went into the freezer to take it out (for my sweet potatoes tomorrow) I found that I'm out of it and my store didn't have any and I just didn't feel like driving way over to the other store to see if they had it. Darn it! Now I have to decide on something else to do with the sweet potatoes.

That looks like a nice thermometer. I just asked this same question a couple days ago and got almost no recommendations other than one. I don't know if it's any good or not. Maybe you can find reviews at Amazon.

I'm thinking that using a thermapen is about the only thing accurate. Seems like it would not be very handy though for candy making since you can't clip it to the pot.
