Raised glass/floating on island--Fabricator suggestions

Part of our "kitchen design" calls for a raised glass/floating counter on our island. I am wondering if any of you out there have any manufacturers/fabricators you can recommend in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our KD is recommending a company in Seattle WA (Duncan Glass) but I was hoping to find someone more local

I have a "floating island" . Ours is granite but we seriously looked into doing glass and Duncan Glass was one of the companies we looked at even though we are in the Midwest. They have a great reputation but after much soul searching and figuring out how the bar would be used and by whom, we elected to go with granite.

Our supports were made by a steel fabricator in Indiana who had worked with the granite company before. They were custom made to the granite fabricators specs but with our design.

We are very happy with how it all turned out and that counter is rock solid, excuse the pun :)

Thanks for the photo of your kitchen--love the granite floating island and ADORE your pulls (Soko studios I presume!) Your kitchen is lovely and memorable--the checkerboard pattern is incredibly clever

Glad to see the floating Granite island as I am seriously contemplating that option. It seems rather bothersome and maybe even a bit risky to construct a template myself for the glass. Plus, I think our floating island will get some heavy use!

very interesting thread. Runningtrails your advise for ornamentals was right on the money!! My mother had a pond and she stocked hers with feeder goldfish which turned out to be HUGE fish. I did notice that she kept having these black babies and i was wondering why since all her fish were gold. We thought there was a black fish hiding somewhere that we could not see that kept reproducing. LOL thanks for clearing that up!! Two things I would like to add is that with any pond you have to make sure you have something to protect the top-an embankment or your pond will overflow with mud If you have a filter make sure you keep on top of debris falling in the pind as this will clog up your filter. Cakistani I notice one common theme you have in most of your questions. You want to raise things with minimal care, things that are self sustaining. Now matter what you decide to do there is going to be some work involved! Just my 2 cents from one peep to another. LOL

Whew - I think I'm OK. Guess I got into reading about "pasteurization" somewhere - and it scrambled my head for awhile. I've been doing fermented beans and cukes and plain dilly beans lately - and guess I need more learning. The dilly beans are OK - from reading your posts. I think the 12 oz. jelly jar idea is great for processing the longer beans. They didn't appeal to me as much for use in jams - just too big for our family. We have a problem consuming the small ones - especially if its citrus. I ordered some juice bottles from Weck this month and looking forward to canning some juices. So far, I've been freezing juice, but these small bottles are so cute. Any one have any "experiences" to pass along. I intend to do some reading before I jump in. The thought of making wine is in the future (still waiting on my grapes to get a bit bigger). Bejay

I couldn't wait to get home & play!!! Thank you all so much! We moved in here & a lot wasn't/still isn't finished. I had to take a break for awhile to live in the space. Just for fun, I found another set of pictures to try also. Ok, so I couldn't let completely go of some of my stuff & put it in the "dead corner" The other side of the kitchen( my favorite place to sit, especially in winter). Still need sconces for FP, pendants over island & UC lighting........... AND command center/ wine bar AND rework pantry cabs to hold microwave & breville in my "scullery" area.

Beautiful, gorgeous kitchen. It must be wonderful to work in. I would have to pinch myself every day. Since this is a walkway to the dining room, if you don't need additional storage, I love the idea of a bold and interesting gallery wall rather than closing it in with more cabinets. Of course if you actually need more storage, shallow cabinets or shelves would be fine also. I guess I would try putting some shallow boxes on the wall to see how it feels before putting something permanent in place.

Ours gets lots of heavy use and that was the main reason we ended up nixing the glass. We just couldn't take a chance it would end up shattering and both Duncan and a local fabricator advised against it in our situation.

As for the template, I drew it myself (with a bit of professional help). I knew the shape I wanted more or less and the fabricator brought over a few rolls of template paper and he and I just went for it. Once we had the rough shape, he suggested rounding out some areas more, changing the shape of the corners, etc and we both think it came out superbly.

Good eye,madster, that pull is from the Soko studio and I love it. It was one of the design elements we started with, that and the checkerboard, and everyone comments on him. I've seen total prudes caress that necked butt. :)

Hi madster,

Unfortunately, I can't recommend a fabricator in your area, however, here's a photo from the fabricator we plan to use (GA) that could possibly be helpful in giving you an idea of shape, etc. if you decide to go with the glass. Were you planning on using regular glass or crackled glass? I think the crackled glass will be more durable and less likely to break, but the drawback is the price - it's not inexpensive by any means! We've debated actually including it in the design many times for that reason and currently are planning to, but that could change I suppose! We didn't find many fabricators that deal with the crackled glass, but found this one just by doing an internet search. The photo below is fairly close to what we'd like for ours. I'm not sure I'd want it if it would be used on a daily basis or if I had kids - granite might be more practical. I simply like the look of it as an accent and something a bit different, and it will primarily be used when entertaining most likely.
