2 year old male rescue dog

hi we adopted jake a 2 yr. old lab and we adore him, but something happens to him at night he freaks out and wants on the bed (which he is not allowed) we have tried telling him NO, putting him in the floor, sitting with him in the living room, nothing works and its always between 1am and 4am. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

He wants on the bed when it thunders because he is scairt. Dogs are afraid of thunder. We had a border collie who was never, not ever allowed in the house, but my dad would relent during thunder storms and allow the dog to creep into the closet and hide under the clothes.
You might make your dog a bed in the closet. The clothes muffled the noise but if the previous owner allowed the dog on the bed, good luck telling him "no" now.
Dogs are very persistent. I would bet you are going to make room and let him cuddle up under the covers with you in the end :)

YES. ABSOLUTELY you can teach a dog to go back to sleep. My pup would get a long walk in the evening just before bed at least 15 minutes, then off to his blanket. When he was about a year, he would get up early - like 5am, I would take him out only to take some off the top and then tell him, go back to bed. After a bit he would get up, and I would say go back to bed. Now he sleeps til 10am, and sometimes does not pee til 11am...He gets an hour walk in the morning, another two walks during the day, usually in the later afternoon and again in the evening. These are anywherre from 15 minutes to a half an hour. Then he gets his evening walk just before I get ready to turn in myself we are out for about 20 minutes. He is completely empty of everything when I go to bed. Your situation is a bit different. You need to have a bit more patience, your pup is only 9 months old, and has had a hard start. Be patient and continue what you are doing. No crating for more than 3 hours during the day if possible. You might also want to open the crate door at night and provide some blankets just outside the crate in case he does eliminate and needs a place to go. That you are reacting at 4am, you are teaching him to get up at 4 am. It may take a couple of weeks but you can get your pup to sleep through the night, and a good long walk and some play time before bed will help immensely. Good luck

Schoolhouse, Dixon's really a nice looking dog. When you go see him, specifically ask about any interaction with cats - maybe walk him by a cat cage and see how he reacts. Mazer is right about concern about your cat and you really do need to figure that in. (I don't have a cat, and never had cats and dogs at the same time.) My last dog was a Shiba with crazy prey drive and I never could have had a cat with him. (Or any other small pet because he hunted EVERYTHING.) While I agree with Cynthia that positive reinforceent and rewards are essential in training, I also believe that my dogs need to know immediately what behavior is not allowed in my house; usually by way of a sharp ah,ah,aht, a NO with a clap, etc. It only takes once or twice and they get it. Bo still has some puppy behaviors like mouthing and chewing, and he absolutely loves to be up on things. He's got the idea that he can't jump on the couch or bed, but still thinks it's OK to put only his front feet up there. So thanks for your encouragement but our training is far from over :) Overall, they get way more treats and praise than corrections. After my dog died last fall, I decided to go the rescue route and was amazed and saddened at the sheer number of unwanted pets out there. Although I had a few misadventures along the way, I now have two fabulous dogs that are working out wonderfully. Thank you for thinking adoption first, and good luck!

nina, I know how you feel. I had to send a dog back to rescue when she turned out to be way too boisterous and hyperactive for my other dog who was fairly old at the time. my other dog became terrified and started hiding under the table. dont beat yourself up about it. unfortunately when you get an older dog there's often some "baggage" and thankfully rescues understand that things dont always work out and will take back the animal. It's really not your fault and perhaps presley is better suited as an only dog? but you can't let a new dog hurt or make your other dogs miserable so hopefully the pup will be a better fit for you. dont blame yourself though, you gave it a try and it just wasnt meant to be but it's no one's fault.

First of all, you don't mention if issues "in her youth" took place with you or before you came along in your dogs life. Why did she go through this?? Second. It is extremely important that you get over your anxiety about your dogs issues. Take a patience pill. Your dog is picking this up and things are only going to get worse. Third. You are expecting way to much from your dog, way to soon. Your dog was traumatized by the rock throwing etc., what do you expect??? She really does not know what is going on at this point and is trying to find her way. Third. It is a HUGE mistake to do anything that is going to scare or ingest pain. You need to throw the damn shocker and muzzle away. Would you put a shocker and muzzle on a child who went through a similar situation and induce shock when it misbehaved???? Trying to force a positive behavior with a negative act is just not the way to go. Your are going to only make things worse. Your dog is going to start to show all sorts of "negative" behaviors, such as submissive peeing, and this "negative" will build on itself. And it will be your fault. You need to VERY SLOWLY build on "POSITIVE" behavior over the course of the next year, maybe more depending on how you and your dog progress. I adopted a 4 month old Shepard/Hound 2.5 years ago who was traumatized before I came along, and Im STILL dealing with her issues. She has come a long way, but is still not there yet, and I realize this. You really do need to give more history concerning timing with all of this both before you came along and after. You have an extremely confused dog, that has humans wrong things to try and make things right. As you mentioned, your dog is a very playful one. Can't you see that this is the "natural" way she was born? This is the way she should be. Not frightened that when she does something she is going to feel pain. Why are you doing things that are going to destroy this?? Sorry to be so blunt. I really have a difficult time holding it when people suggest or do "negative" acts to try and create a "positive" behavior. IT JUST DOES NOT WORK. NEVER HAS, NEVER WILL. SG

I have two thunder shy dogs. Actually, they both begin to tense when the barometer starts down.

I have worked with them by doing fun things when they become agitated. Toy play, Speaking happily and laughing when thunder booms. Took months, but they began to feel my lack of agitation and how calm I was---and they became slowly less agitated.

Make him a bed beside yours. Molly(our female rescue) was more calm in a wire kennel beside our bed---with an old sleeping bag on the top to make a cave. We just left the door open. She still uses that 'cave' on occasion.

Ignore his unwanted behavior. If he shivers in fear, get toys out. Do fun things, speak happily--(be happy, they pick up on that). Scratch where ever they like scratching.

Do NOT feel sorry for them---or allow that emotion to exist. By not allowing unwanted behavior, you make them practice wanted behavior---which makes them a much happier, more balanced dog.

Great advice re: the thunder, but can you explain how he 'freaks out' at night.......with no thunder?
If he's just wanting in the bed with you I'd set up a crate, as handymac described, so that he can still be close to you, yet not in your bed. You might also try using night lights throughout the house and maybe leave a radio/tv on low in another part of the house. Is it possible he's hearing noises outside, or inside, the house?

Your dog knows that your bed is very comfortable that he wants to sleep beside you. You can try to place his bed up on an elevated surface so he can see you. At least you can be able to reach out and touch him, but his bed should be far enough that he can't make the leap onto your covers.
Make bedtime a routine for your dog. Reward him with a nighttime treat, like a special toy he only gets when he goes to bed.
