Stainless Steel Sink Questions

Finally made decision to use a stainless steel sink after debating about the Blanco Siligranit sinks for some time. Both my fabricator and GC told me I'd have problems with the Siligranit but were willing to install anything I wanted. They have no hidden agenda.

So - now here's the next area of confusion. Most of the stainless steel sinks I was shown in various plumbing supply places were 18 gauge - not the 14 or 16 gauge that I thought I was supposed to get. Plumbing outlets all told me that 18 gauge was all I needed. I did look at the CTEC sinks which are 16 gauge but one place told me that those were "pressed", and that they weren't as good. Of course, that place didn't sell CTEC sinks.

The Blanco 18 gauge sink is close to $600 and I can get the CTEC 16 gauge sink for about $400. Which would you select ?

I'm so confused now !!!!

99.9999999999999% of all stainless steel sinks ARE PRESSED!

Have you looked at MR Direct?

Check them out - I have worked with them for the last 3 years -
WITHOUT A SINGLE PROBLEM!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MR Direct!

You've made your decision, so not trying to talk you out of it, but did they tell you what problems you'd have with the Silgranit and why you'd have these problems? Just curious. We have two (yet to be installed). I wonder if their concerns are the typical minor problems I've re@d about on the forum or something major.

My Shaws sink is 10 years old. I had the white grid for about 8 years. Some of the white material starting coming off and it starting rusting in those spots. It did show discoloration. I used bleach about once a month (very dilute) in the sink and that cleaned it up pretty well. I just recently felt it was time to replace the grid and got a new SS one from Amazon. I thought the SS would solve all of the problems. It still gets "gunky" at the intersections. A blackish gunk. So it has to be cleaned frequently as well. The alternative is no grid which is not a good alternative. I didn't have a grid for the first couple years and the bottom of the sink got a few chips. White looks better imho. As far as wear and care...its six of one and half dozen of another.

I have the Ruvati single bowl sink. Pros: It's big and holds a lot of dishes. It's sturdy and insulated well enough for me. I like the ledge for accessories. Cons: It has a flat bottom, so I chase food around the sink with the sprayer trying to get food particles down the drain. It has tight corners and hard to clean. The colander has wood, so I'm not sure how long that will last and it has large holes and is open on each end. That prevents you from using it for anything small, like straining spaghetti. I suppose you could use it for larger cut vegetables. I personally have it on the ledge and use it to set my liquid soap bottle, scrubbies and to hang my dishcloth to dry on the edge. I sometimes rinse my flatware and place in there prior to loading the dishwasher. I bought an after market, fine mesh colander that expands to fit the ledge and I store it in my cabinets. The grid for the bottom of the sink I thought was a good idea when I bought the sink. I hate it. The space between grids is too large to prevent anything from falling through. It gets food gunk on it, so I would be constantly scrubbing it and have to take it out to clean the sink. I don't use it anymore. If I could have a do-over, I would not purchase it again. You spend a lot of time at the sink, so allow enough in your budget to get a sink that will make using it less of a chore.

In my business, the cabinet installer sets the farm sink or apron front sink. Then the quartz or granite (or whatever) tops are templated with the sink in place by the countertop fabrication company. Two weeks later, they set the tops....then I send out the plumber for the hookup.

Don't worry about changing my mind (again). The fabricator and the GC both told me that the siligranit will chip/scratch over time and that it will be a whole lot more difficult to replace these sinks if needed than if I needed to replace a stainless sink.

Of course, I realize that stainless will scratch too so I am not that naive. I just think the stainless will work better for my kitchen overall since I have stainless appliances. And I don't want to hear any "I told you so's" from the GC, the fabricator or my DH for that matter !!!! :)

FYI - even one of the sink supply stores talked me out of the siligranit sinks telling me he's had numerous complaints. And he did sell them ! But who knows - I think you have to go by your personal taste and feelings about the whole thing.

I am ready to go buy the C-TEC stainless (16 gauge) sink unless someone can give me some good reasons not to ! Really appreciate this forum's input ! Thanks in advance !

I researched this a lot back when we remodeled and for stainless steel I found the Blanco Supreme sink (18 gauge) was highly recommended here. I have been very happy with it for 3 years. I don't think it matters with every day use. This sink is so sturdy that I cannot imagine what I could possibly do to dent it. I like having the sink grid on both sides of our 1 3/4 and wash them in the dishwasher. I don't have any deep scratches. My husband thinks the grids are silly and in the way though.
