Plain & Fancy vs. Plato Woodworks
Comments (6)I chose Plato Woodwork over P&F. As a designer, I look for quality in the product as well as people and manufacturers who can provide the proper service and deliver on time and on budget for my clients. And Plato has done that for me in the past 3 years. During my initial debate between the two lines, I considered the quality of the finishes and their abilities to make custom parts and pieces and I'd say they are both great products. In terms of quality, I was particularly drawn to the fact that Plato's finishes are much more unique and stands itself apart from the masses. Their cabinet boxes are sturdy and well engineered, and as an added bonus, they are a green product with a formaldehyde-free finish and glue. (see http://www.platowoodwork.com/ and their green website http://platowoodwork-california.com) While I cannot speak about P&F's customer service, I can definitely share some experiences about Plato. Their customer services and engineers actually review your kitchen before making the cabinets, as opposed to just another cabinet order being pushed through an assembly line. So they actually know which cabinet goes where and look at your order as a functional space, versus just a cabinet list. If/when there are problems, their customer service jumps all over it to make sure a reasonable solution is provided to ensure proper customer satisfaction, which both my clients and I value highly. Having been in the business for years now, I have had enough of different finger pointing and am glad that I haven't had much of that to deal with at all from Plato and their service reps. And at the end of the day, I think we are paying the same, if not less than what most other cabinet makers at this level of craftsmanship, so then at the end of my debate, it was really more of a question, 'why NOT Plato?' I hope this helps and good luck with your project! Eric eric@mtkc.net www.mtkc.net Here is a link that might be useful: MT Kitchen Cabinets, Inc...See MorePlain and Fancy, Medallion, or custom?
Comments (11)drachiele, I do not agree with your statement at all. A local shop doesn't have the advertising costs, the costs of paying the "middleman" to sell cabinets, or often the same level of labor or markup costs. Local shops don't have to ship cabinets. You also don't get up-charged to extreme extents for anything outside of the standard line since custom cabinet makers can more easily accommodate special requests because they build each cabinet to the specs of the customer instead of in assembly-line format. The people who work in a local shop have to care about quality because they often exist solely on word of mouth and referrals for their business. Often, you have the cabinets being made by owners of the cabinet shop (or relatives of the owners) rather than some paid employees in a factory who do not have the same incentive to care. I am not implying by this that there's anything wrong w/ factory cabinets and I am sure many factory cabs are better than many custom cabinets. However, I think it is serious misinformation to suggest that custom cabinets cannot ever be as good as factory cabs. My Amish-made custom cabinets are far nicer than the non-custom lines we looked at in terms of quality, craftsmanship, and cost. They also cost between $20,000 and $80,000 less than Medallion, Candlelight and the other non-custom options we looked at. We did not compromise quality, we improved it, and we saved significant money....See Morecabinets - Brookhaven vs. Signature vs. Plain & Fancy
Comments (3)I didn't see P&F here, but from what I've read here over about 3 years I would expect it to be high quality and high satisfaction. I had the same impression of Brookhaven. I would have had the impression that they would cost more than Brookhaven, but it seems there is some variance in how Brookhaven will price out depending on where you are and whop you are dealing with. There are also little details that can have bigger impacts on your pricing than you might expect. And again, I don't think they are sold anywhere in this area. I have Brookhaven frameless. I have seen a number of folks here who also have them, and I've never seen complaints about them. Mine have been in over 2 years and I'm very pleased with them. I do have some cherry, but it is Woodmode -- the finish was gorgeous and it was a near match to our breakfast room set. If possible, I would price out more than one line in at least a basic configuration before you make a decision....See MorePlain & Fancy cab look alike?
Comments (12)In the line of Kraftmaid carried at Lowes, they have a similar "Gresham" style that is is single, squared route. My local Lowes has a display with the door style. Though the display is stained, rather than painted. I can snap a couple photos tonight & post. http://www.kraftmaid.com/products/cabinet-doors/8839/#/ds:/dpsA:/dpsS:/dfto:/dfty:/dwt:Maple/do:FullOverlayDoorDesign/n:/p:2/ps:20/f:canvas-with-cinder-glaze...See Morekhat
