Attack of the giant rutabaga!

It was as big as a mini Dachshund! Surprisingly it was still good and tender. After peeling and slicing it, I tossed it with some olive oil and S&P and roasted in the oven.

DH cleaned out the garden and this was one of the last things harvested. Also picked a half dozen winter squash, Kabocha (DH's favorite) and Banana, lots of carrots and onions, and a dozen tomatoes. There are green ones still on the vine but I don't think they will get ripe.

I usually put in a winter garden about this time but not this year with the broken hip. So what's up with your garden?

Clare, I love rutabaga, but your poor Doxie looks confused as to what should be done with it, LOL.

My garden is done and it's snowing outside today. I've been roasting and pureeing butternut squash for the freezer, I had a LOT of them and they're starting to mold, so I'm trying to save as many of them as I can. I still have potatoes left too, never did can that potato leek soup.

I do have lots of jars on my shelves, though, from the garden. I'm stocked for the winter, well stocked.

I still have to make Habanero Gold and Readinglady's pear preserves, then I'm done. Well, maybe some chili and some beef vegetable soup might get canned too, and some blueberry jam from blueberries in the freezer.

It's so much nicer to stir a jam pot in January than it is in August!

I have a kabocha squash from our CSA. We had one last night just roasted plain. Do you have a favorite way to prepare it?

A lot depends on your soil. We have a high sand content and it drains really well so there is no danger of rot and fungus attacking the seed. There is a bit of a gamble because if you plant to early the plant will try to bolt. I'd say that late August to mid September should be OK. You just have to look and predict the arrival of Fall. By the time the seedling is growing we should be getting the cooler days and nights. A second alternative is to start them indoors under lights and then transplant them. It is a lot like Spring planting. Sometimes you nail it and some times you have to replant. I know I had to replant my butter beans this year.

I love Cosmos. I started with one package of Orange and Yellow Klondikes and Bright Lights about 3 years ago and have had about the same results. They do love the spring and then the fall and will get very tall. I scatter the seeds from the ones that have come up in between the cracks of the stepping stones and in the pots of other flowers. They are really pretty in front of or mixed with the tall purple Mexican Sage or with the shorter red Tropical Sage. The other colors don't reseed as well and never get as big. What is so funny to watch is the squirrels trying to climg up the flimsy stalks to eat the flowers, which they love. they hang on for dear life as it bends towards the ground!

Attack of the giant faucet!! Anyone use a prep faucet instead

I struggled a bit with my prep sink faucet when I first took it out of the box. I chose the same faucet for my prep and cleanup sinks, but wasn't worried about how the 16" faucet would look in front of the cleanup sink window. My prep sink is on the island open to the family room so I was afraid of the giant faucet look. I ended up going for the function of this tall pulldown and am very happy I did. Fori is right about getting used to it. Yes, it will look like a monster at first because you are used to a smaller faucet. Then you don't even notice it after a while. Also, you might concentrate on faucets with sleeker, cleaner lines also like the one you currently own instead of some of the fat, frou-frou ones which draw attention to themselves and their size.

I learned to make pasties from my mother in law, who was born and raised in Houghton, MI. She always used beef suet and butter in the crust with the flour, salt and water. They called pasties with rutabegas Finlander pasties. The ones I make call for cubed top sirloin, potatoes, onions and topped with salt, pepper and butter. I haven't made them since DH had coronary bypass surgery....and it is difficult to find good beef suet in our area. DH's family always used a lot of catsup on theirs but I like hot Mexican salsa or pickled jalapenos on mine.

cloud_swift - I cook kabocha squash like acorn squash. I cut it in half and steam it in water. It is so sweet I don't add any brown sugar or even butter, but eat it plain.

We planted the garlic, shallots and onions last month, but we haven't had a freeze so our peppers are still producing even though the basil is on it's last legs. What's sort of funny is that I have 3 tiny green tomatoes on a sucker I planted back in August. A freeze is expected Friday so we'll see if they hang on.

Aside from bumper crops we are getting fingerling potatoes, collards, Cosmic purple and red core carrots, some Seminole pumpkins (I love these). The swiss chard and lettuce have been especially good this year considering I keep forgetting to water them! Thank goodness for rain.

I have also been doing a lot of seed trading which is a lot of fun. I'm on two seed trains and have three SASE going out tomorrow.

Holy cow, that's one big rutabaga! I have been buying them (much smaller size) to use in my stir fries. Pretty good stuff! Al

In Maine, for some reason, rutabagas are called turnips...dunno what they call turnips.

Did you know the leaves are edible, just like turnip greens?
