Stray cat won't leave
Comments (5)I have such mixed feelings. I don't wish any animal harm.....except maybe ticks, mosquitoes, raccoons.....etc.,......haha It's probably too much to hope for, but it might be gone.......but I doubt it. I live out in the country. It was sleeping in our garden-way cart on the porch yesterday (so cute.....) It saw me looking through the window and started meowing, so I closed the drapes. Later, I opened them, just in time to see something chasing something at a high rate of speed. Not sure who was chasing whom.........but I didn't see her again until the evening, down by the road. Hopefully, she's found her way to someone else's house. My son lives about 90 miles from here and he's offered to take it to a no-kill shelter. I hate removing it from it's environment.........but all my insecurities would probably vanish if I saw it killing a bird.......or a chipmunk, etc. There are enough predators out there, without adding stray cats. Thanks for your support!...See MoreDo stray cats stand a chance at the shelter?
Comments (24)We have been taking care of ferals for years, at least 10 years..Presently, we have a mother and her daughter, we did have the son, but like true ferals, if they get sick, they will go off to die..And about a month ago, a fully intact mail decided to live with us...He's very feral and is going to be a challenge to get neutered....With the other 2, we got help through Ally Cats and our local Humane society and were able to trap/spay/neuter and then release....It's a wonderful program with lots of good information....Our winters in SW. Pa., aren't severe, but it does get nasty and we do worry about them...We do have an igloo but they preferred the frame from an old TV console...My husband made sure it was insulated and then we use, what is called, a Snuggle Safe....Looks like a frisbee and you heat it in the Micro and put it under a blanket and it stays warm for up to 15 hours...Our ferals have become pretty tame, but not tame enough to bring inside...The mother is now 13 years old and it's taken years for me to be able to pick her up...Both of them loved to be petted and loved..... AND, just today, a sweet little gray striped female wondered onto the patio and decided, this was her home..She very friendly, loves to sit on your lap and is litter trained..I've asked all the neighbors and we're now thinking she's been dumped...So, she's spending the night in my laundry room and tomorrow, I'll put a sign in the Post Office...Of course my 2 inside cats are not too happy and hubby keeps saying, we're not keeping her but....... Good luck with your fur kids and bless you for having such a big heart........See Morewhat to do when you see a stray cat?
Comments (30)Looks like I'm having this conversation with myself now! Anyway, last night I got to interact with "Henry" again. I put a generous serving of food on a paper plate and put it out in the bushes where his area usually is. I went back inside for about 5 minutes... just long enough to plate myself a slice of cheesecake. Then went out with the flashlight to find not only Henry but another baby grey tabby chowing down fiercly! The new arrival is feral... it ran as soon as I shone the light on the feast. Henry gave me a HISS as I approached. I sat down right beside him and started petting him on the head and back. Even scratched his ears. He didn't even acknowledge my presence... just continued munching. He must have been STARVING. As soon as he finsished the food (3 minutes flat 2 cups of dry food was GONE) he gave a final hiss and darted off into the woods. I guess I've got a routine going now and I will just supply food until I can gain the trust of the poor thing! I didn't hear a single purr so I am assusming survival is more important than interaction at this point. Since there is a white collar (no ID tags!) and the cat ate in front of me I'm assuming he's owned a human before... just wonder if he ran away or was dumped!...See MoreDistressing indecision regarding stray cat
Comments (6)Thank you for the responses. I should have given more info. I can sum up the contents of that thread: I trapped the cat in a Havahart trap early in November and took her to the vet. They tested her for feline leukemia (negative), gave her a rabies shot, treated her (Revolution) for fleas and ear mites, gave her a long-lasting shot of antibiotics for her eyes, and spayed her. I took her home to recover in a dog crate in my guest room and worked on taming her. When she got to the point where she would let me pet her head, and she purred (a couple of weeks), I let her out into the guest room. I had little contact with her there, as she mostly hid under the bed. When I saw the discharge on the bedding I realized her eyes were no better. I lured her back into the crate, and then into a cat carrier, and we went back to the vet. Another treatment with Revolution, another long-lasting antibiotic shot. Plus he cleaned out her ears. He told me to treat her eyes with ointment twice a day for a week. I took her home and put her back in the dog crate, which my son and I moved atop the bed (with a new tarp underneath to protect the bed) so I can reach her easily. The week is more than up, and her eyes are no better. She still sounds congested, and is still sneezing. She eats well. Has diarrhea, but that's probably from the antibiotic. I don't think she's grooming. I know our animal shelter very well, and she wouldn't stand a chance there. They are nice people, but have too many to care for already. I have l-lysine in the house and could try mixing it with canned food. The latter might add to the diarrhea, but I suppose it's worth a try. Do you know how much to give? My tablets are 1,000 mg....See More- 9 years ago
