Cat allergic to 'normal' cat food!

This is a message on behalf of my roommate.

She has a male cat, about 4 years old.

She found out when he was fairly young that he is allergic to most cat foods. The vet said something about the proteins in the food that he is allergic to. Basically when he eats normal cat food he gets these tumours or growths in his mouth that have to be treated with expensive medicine.

He is currently on Medi-Cal's Gastro Hypo-Allergenic food. The problem is that it is ridiculously expensive. Like $25 for a bag that would cost you $8 for the same size of Purina Cat Chow.

So her questions:

1. Is there anything that is less expensive?

2. Is there any other way to treat this allergy?

3. Does anyone know where she can purchase this food in bulk? The bags only come in a medium size (which is still pretty small) and she has to buy a bag every 3 weeks or so.

Also, I know there are a few vets that visit this forum. Have any of you heard of this condition before? (the growths in his mouth) Could you explain it a little bit?

Thanks!
