Vinegar Pie? Crust or crustless? History?

DD and I are in a mother daughter bookclub. I can honestly say that of the 12 couples in the group, maybe, maybe 2 of us bake LOL

We just finished reading A Friendship for Today and our meeting is tonight. In the book, one family (whites) from Arkansas brings a vinegar pie as a thank you gift to their helpful neighbours in TN. The neighbors are African American and have never heard of such a thing but are willing to try it.

The recipe is included and I assume that it is one from the authors personal recipe box as unlike any I have found online, it appears to be crustless.

I'm going to make it as written in the book but am wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of pie? Or stories to tell? Recipes to share?

I added the racial references because while trying to find out more about the history of Vinegar pie, I discovered no-one knows the true origins. Did it originate in the South, the midwest, white or African American, with crust or without (my question).
