I did talk to my plumber friend, who did say the flange should "sit on top" of the tile. He did say I could put my 1/2" plywood down on the floor, tile, and just make I leave room for some extra long bolts because he has a "flange extender." Which is basically a another flange that sits on top of the tile, and has a longer down spout which goes INTO the existing flange down spout. They would use PVC pipe sealer/glue like any normal PVC sealent, and that should be fine. The big thing is to make sure we have bolts that are long enough, because the original flange is the one that is screwed into the subfloor, and we would still be using that to stabilize the toilet. I like those. But I'm still not sure they will work, as the closet flange itself is below the tiled floor. I tried a rubber gasket, but it's not thick enough. And the reno kit left the w.c. wobbling 3/4" above the floor. In the end--just finished--I used one of the reno kit rubber spacers and the rubber gasket. Voila! Now, to patch the ceiling I didn't have to break in the first place. :(

That's true, I didn't consider that it might be cast iron. If's its in a basement, and the floor is easily replaced, it may be worthwhile to take up the flooring, open the slab and dig a little. Messy, labor intensive operation though. I guess the solution will depend on the location of the affected appliance and the tools/skill level of the homeowner. I think lazypups idea of using the sheeted PVC to make a shim in the shape of the bottom of the bowl is probably the simplest solution. You could probably easily fashion one yourself (plywood?) if you can't find the material locally.

Great question: "Does anyone know of a way to raise a toilet?" Better believe it, CukeDuke. I was a witness to the failed raising of a love-child. ItÂs a lot easier to raise a toilet, if only because they donÂt give you as much crap. OTOH, when the question becomes Nature vs. Nurture, Nature wins hands-down in this forum. Raising a toilet is hard, because they need to have a good, solid-education if you want them to go anywhere. (IÂm sure youÂve heard of potty-training.) I know we donÂt actually need to invite Albert Einstein into this discussion, but he did say something about relativity that we can employ. Einstein would agree that raising a toilet is equal to lowering the flange. But itÂs a little scary. I had an uncle who used to threaten: "IÂm going to lower the flange!" That scared the livin stuff out of everybody. So naturally, it never went anywhere from there. He died much too early. HeÂs been inturd ever since. Tomorrow, I want tell you about my dear aunt.
