Abbreviation Help!

Hi Everyone,

Is there a central location where all of the abbreviations are defined? If not, can we start a thread explaining them? For starters what's "OT"?

I don't know of a location for them all, but here's a few:
OT = off topic (not directly related to decorating, on this board)
Pic= photo/picture
LOL= laughing out loud
ROFLMAO= rolling on the floor laughing my a$$ off!
DH= Dear Hubbie
DD= Dear Daughter
DS= Dear Son
DDIL= Dear Daughter-in-Law

SW = Sherwin Williams
RH = Restoration Hardware
BM = Benjamin Moore
EK = Ellen Kennon

Sorry, I learned them as 'dear' back in the 60's. Occurred to me later that 'darling' had become the usage... showing my age, I reckon. Also shows that while acronyms have their place, we better be sure we're speaking (writing?) the same jargon else we'll only be talking to ourselves.

Thanks again to petzold, you've responded to a few of my posts, and it is nice to see a willingness to help! I was afraid that GW was not very active, but now I see that it is in fact "alive" My thanks also go out to gardengal! I have seen your responses in the landscape design forum, and you seem to be quite knowledgeable...as do many of the folks in that forum. I have found a wealth of information there while reading many of the older posts....newer ones too, but the older ones seem to have more follow-ups. I plan to continue learning from everyone there and perhaps one day I will seek counsel myself. So, OP=Original Poster, very good to know. Perhaps "operational plan" is when you prepare to extract/implant plants/features around the garden, sort of like an appendectomy or perhaps an augmentation. ....maybe :/

Mike, I think we're talking about abbreviations such as: KB, Kellogg's Breakfast KBX, KB PL ( potato leaf as opposed to RL ( regular leaf) NAR, Neves Azorean Red LPB, Large Pink Bulgarian CP, Cherokee Purple CG, Cherokee Green CC, could be Cherokee Chocolate or Champagne Cherry but in the context of the post it's usually clear which one. ....and on and on. LOL And tomato problems such as BER, Blossom End Rot EB, early blight (caused by A. solani) LB, Late Blight ( caused by P. infestans) ......and many more And yes, tomato disease tolerances for hybrids and some OP's which are almost always defined at the better sites,such as: V, Verticillium F, Fusarium and three races so F, FF , FFF referring to those 3 different ones which show no cross tolerance N, Root Knot Nematodes T, Tobacco Mosaic Virus and many more. it's the variety abbreviations that many of us use without even thinking about it that certainly CAN be confusing to others new to the area and some NOT new as well, so as I said above, if the abbreviation isn't known to someone and not defined , just ask. OMG= Oh my gosh! . . . at least when I use it, it does ;^P

IIRC = If I remember correctly
IRL = In real life
NP = no problem
OP = original poster
PO = previous owner
CL = Craigslist

How about the ones that are specific to decorating? Such as...

PO = Previous Owner
ORB = Oil Rubbed Bronze
SW = Sherwin Williams (paint)
BN = Benjamin Moore (also paint)
EK = Ellen Kennon (still more paint)
ID = Interior Designer
CL = Craigs List
HD = Home Depot
LR, DR, BR = Living Room, Dining Room, Bedroom
SS = Stainless Steel
JMHO = Just My Humble Opinion

parma it took me a moment with GFU! duh.
My DH teases me that DH really means Dumb Husband in GW code.
On the kitchen forum DW means either dishwasher or Dear Wife, ya gotta read closely sometimes there.
DD dear daughter
DS dear son
etc.

Last weekend the neighbors were discussing using abbreviations when they text their kids. The kids all claimed they didn't know what the moms meant and the moms must have been making up their own abbreviations (which they did admit to doing!).
A teacher in the group suggested putting flash card type labels on all sorts of things around the house. Then when Mom texts "empty dw" the kid will know it means dishwasher & can't avoid the task by playing dumb.

In my college Sociology course there was actually a chapter on this.

SS also stands for Silver Sage
You'll see lots of common paint colors abbreviated such as:

BM BT: Benjamin Moore Baby Turtle
SW RG: Sherwin Williams Restrained Gold
RH SS: Restoration Hardware Silver Sage
ROFLMFAO: Rolling On Floor Laughing My Fat A!@ Off
