Replacing main water service line - copper? PE? PEX?
Comments (22)I wanted to report back and thank all the folks here for their advice. We did end up using a 2" PE pipe. The interesting thing was that my plumber had never used it. Neither had 4 other who I got quotes from. They were willing to use PVC or PEX but other than my plumber, no one was even willing to look into PE. The city inspector had never seen it and had to check the california code book to see if it was even approved (It is). The local plumbing supply stores (big box and speciality) did not have it or have in the length that I needed (280ft). So the plumber took his van up to San Francisco to buy it. The plumbing supply store also told him that he has to use a special machine for the joints that he can rent but he had to get trained before he could do that. So my plumber did get trained, rented the machine, got the pipe. It took him a few hours to lay the pipe, wrap some 18 guage wire (CA code for non-metal service lines). He connected to an existing copper for a cottage, connected to a landscape faucet, and the main house. The cost was much more reasonable than Copper. We are in middle of a remodel, so we did not need a special permit.. just an inspection. Saga over....See MoreWhat is the best water supply line material
Comments (3)There are a lot of options. Your local hardware store probably carries several of them. I've used cpvc (not pvc). This is rated for both hot and cold. Your coming in from the outside - so your only on the cold side; but I ran cpvc on my own house when the supply line (old steel pipe) eventually went bust. I did also encase it in galavanized steel; sealing up the joints extrmely well (to protect against water intrusion into the house via the galvanized sleeve) - so that an errant shovel or some such - would not cause problems... There are some extrmely flexible, continuous roll, plastic pipe or 'hose' available. This basically becomes a jointless line between the meter and the house. You figure out the footage required, get a long roll of it; and put in between the meter, and the house entrance. 'PEX' would be one type of this. But it also is approved for both hot and cold. It has fittings allowing you to easily branch off and go to various areas of the home... Haven't ever used it. I prefer to (personal choice) use cpvc. Like pvc; there are some plastic hose types which are flexible, and used for supply - which are only approved for the cold side of life......See MoreWaterline (service line) in concrete slab?
Comments (2)What does your local building authority allow? What's common practice in your area? That's the place to start. I think that your husband is being unreasonable in his fear regarding plastic and concrete. It's used often - PEX in particular is often used in slabs including for radiant heat. Concrete always cracks / shifts / settles not to mention freezing. I'd much rather have a flexible pipe in/under the slab than something that will break when the concrete shifts. Even so, I'd look at how to avoid the slab entirely (go around) if you can. Note: they have been using PEX in Europe much longer than here. It's proven stuff....See MoreRooter companies all want to re-line my sewer pipe
Comments (20)you may not know but this pipe lining ws started over in europe the last 3 decades maybe 4? their infrustucture is way older than ours. where I am, it is all slab homes (no basements) mostly 1970's and 80ty's were made of cast iron. PVC started to make it way into the mainstream after that. These pipes are rotting away! when I say rotting I mean the base is gone.fractures are 1/2 inch and wider that are all over the place.sides, bottom, top, in lentghs that are in feet. Now you also have water lines in there.where? who knows. pipe bursting is not good because at every place a 2" or 4" pipe comes into the main line you have to dig up a section of floor to have a repair done et every interval. short of digging up the home and it had been done, pipe lining is the only real way to avoid a total rehab of the home. the co's that do this have a limited 50 year warranty on materials. it seals every joint, fracture all drains coming into the line and thats where they call reinstateting comes in. they have to open up all drains that where covered over by the material. so if europe started this,30 or 40 years ago and did all their streets (no digging up the streets all over europe) and I have not read anything bad happening I would not have any fears. like anything else, price and convience, where I am located sarasota fl this is the only way to fly! I am talking infustructure. if you had a cobblestone driveway the cost of lining would be cheaper than having someone come in to do the repair on top of the repair. also pipe pulling would in that case should be looked at too. BTW I also do this work...See Moremissstella
