Is there a checklist for Kitchen Remodel?

I'm just in the thinking stage of planning a kitchen remodel project. My kitchen is really small, and my options are limited, so layout and "design" isn't that much of an issue. But of course I want to make sure the job gets done well. Other than the obvious things, like make sure to thoroughly vet the company, is there a checklist of things to look out for?
After your project was done, what did you wish you thought of ahead of time?

I'm also interested in feedback on this. DH and I went back & forth over timing for refinishing the wood floors. Do it first & cover the floor while we paint/replace cabinets, install new vent/appliances (we're keeping the same footprint) or do everything else, then finish the floors. I thought the latter, but DH argued that all the dust from floor work would mess up the new, or newly refinished cabinetry. And the best answer is...?

Good checklist. Dianalo, would following this checklist have prevented what happened to you? A colleague of my husband's had her kitchen remodeled probably a year and a half ago and she still doesn't have a functional kitchen. Aside from it being a GC issue, I'm not sure what happened there or why it hasn't been completed. It's the sort of thing to give you reno nightmares.

Update to the 6 & 10 Rule: It only applies when the 1/3 - 2/3 Rule of Cantilevering applies (1' can cantilever over 2' of cabinets). If your slab is 2 cm, you can have up to a 6" overhang without support. If your slab is 3 cm you can have up to a 10" overhang without support . If you are using a pony wall or cabinets with a depth of less than 2 times the depth of the overhang, then you need to provide support to equal at least 2/3 of the total depth of the countertop. . The primary reason why I suggest 90 CFM/sq.ft. actual at the hood entry aperture is to ensure that the effluent otherwise reflecting from the baffle and hood structures (due to conservation of momentum) is entrained in the 180 ft/min or higher flow velocity entering the baffle gaps. This gap velocity value is commensurate with the actual plume velocity. The term "containment" in the vent hood industry refers to getting the effluent past the baffles. I would call the volume under the baffles the capture volume. One point I've come to realize is that slow cooking of greasy foods (think bacon, for example) will generate a relatively low effluent rising velocity that can be successfully captured and contained using a low blower setting. However, the centrifugal grease extraction in the baffles will be poor at the flow velocity resulting from that setting. If one wants to collect as much grease as possible, the blower will need to be set higher than needed for just capture and containment. Residential hoods may present a range of pressure losses. (Hood internal transition losses are included in the following, and are likely significant when the hood is large but must transition to a constrained duct diameter. Also not to be forgotten is the transition loss at the hood entry aperture, and the effects of abrupt flow direction changes within the hood.) I have Wolf supplied Broan-NuTone fan curves with superimposed pressure loss curves (by effective duct length) that indicate (for some hoods not specified, but I believe them to be the "Pro" hoods I was discussing with them which have most of the intake aperture faced by baffles) pressure losses of 0.75 inches at about 850 CFM (1200 CFM external blower) with zero feet of duct, and about 0.32 inches at 540 CFM (600 CFM external blower) with zero feet of duct. For my 1500 CFM external blower (Wolf 804701) I assume the baffle/hood loss to be an inch at 1000 CFM across 10 hood baffle sections including hood losses. This Pro Island hood has about 10 square feet of entrance aperture. This is equivalent to an inch at 100 CFM per baffle section (including a share of unknown hood losses). I don't think we should attribute less than 0.5 inches of pressure loss to the baffles alone. As an overall vent system, however, when accounting for other losses the flow will be lower with this blower and hood. I'm guessing about 900 CFM at about 1.2 inches when my MUA is finally completed and optimized. Duct is 10-inch for roughly 20 feet and includes a Fantech silencer.

Our floors went in first & were then covered (still partially covered) until everything was done. We had a few tiny dents when they were uncovered but our floor is walnut & softer than many wood species.

amck - our floors were done first. And we covered them with rosin paper and hardboard. Which would have worked well...except that our GC pulled those things back when working on an area and instead of vacuuming well before putting the rosin paper and hardboard back over, they left the bits and pieces underneath. So, we wound up with pieces of copper from some of the wiring, etc. under there and getting ground in a bit. Yeah, lovely. Who would have thought they would do that?

Anyway, our flooring guys are coming back to put our final coat on after everything is done and we're hoping there's a bit that they can do about the gouges and scratches from the GC. Having had this issue, I would still do floors first...I'd just make sure that the guys working would be a little more cautious...well, we've tried drilling that into them too and that hasn't worked so great, so who knows if specifically telling them that they should vacuum before putting the hardboard back over in an area would have actually sunk in.

After spending too much time looking at different cabinet companies, realized may have been easier to decide which was more important to me - door style or stain/color.

Once I realized (for me) it was stain/color, it was easy to rule out options. (For example, love Fieldstone cabinet construction - unfortunately, don't like any of the colors.)

Overheard a KD telling a customer to pick the company first, then the door & color - this is what I was doing and it added way too much time to my selection process.

Thanks for the feedback regarding timing for floors. Seems a minor remodel is more difficult than building. Reminds me of sewing - I 'd rather sew something from scratch than make alterations.

Mdln, great tip re cabinets.
