Finally bought a freezer last night...

A Frigidaire 13.7 cubic foot model. I've been shoehorning stuff into my refrigerator freezer for far too long.

Now I'll actually be able to put a variety of food by and not have to shop so darned much.

Will be here on 9 January.

And the best thing is, I got it at Best Buy, which has 18 months same as cash going on right now.

Good for you, Michael. If you're anything like me it won't take long to fill it.

Is it an upright or a chest type. I find things are easier to keep track of in an upright, but I can cram more stuff into a chest type.

Dale I would never be able to describe the exact location of where these morels were found. They were on private property, and I was invited by the owner, or I never would have found it by myself. Now, since she has moved, I'd probably have to trespass or get the new owner's permission. Anyways, you should be happy to know they are to be found in many locations in Oklahoma. Keep tabs on this link, and you should be able to zero in on a good location. I think there's another morel link for Oklahoma as well as this one online. You won't be disappointed if you luck onto a good morel spot. As you will see in the pics in this link, even the homeies love them, lol! Just wait til about April and about four days after a rain. Look for a moist woodland, where some deer and cows have roamed, and there are many such places in Oklahoma. I LOVE morels just about any way you can prepare them. And especially morel soup, or perhaps cut up in small pieces for tempura. A real delicacy. I've been thinking of starting my own little shitake patch. You can buy the spores of those online and perhaps other varieties as well. Dawn I can relate to the harvesting, canning and preserving fatigue. Getting kind of tired of it myself, so when dinner time rolls around and it's just me, it's catch as catch can from the garden. I really do hate to see the summer crops dwindling. Okra not bearing well. The cucumbers that store boughts will NEVER be able to rival are just about kaput. I still have tons of BIG tomatos that haven't ripened yet. Since it's been dry, with no recent rain, I've been allowing them to store up all that deliciousness and not get soggy or insipidly flavorless, so they have been amazing! Especially enjoying the Indian Stipes, which were not new to you, but certainly a delightful first for me. I'm hoping I don't get stuck with having to can jars of pickled tomatos or green tomato relish. I like it, but there's only so much of it I can eat. Today's menu was simply one of my baked buttercup squash, (just the right size for me), with butter and brown sugar, and cooked to pieces pole beans. Since I don't have a family to cook for, sometimes I kind of 'batch' and my folks used to call it. Depends on whether you want the heat I guess, or if it will affect drying time. I took the seeds out of my jalapenos because they were sort of thick and the first little trial batch took forever to dry. I ended up with a mild powder with a full jalapeno flavor. To spice it up, when I want to, I add whole dried de arbols. (Dried whole, crushed when I use them) Those are small peppers with very thin walls, and I wanted their heat, so I left them intact. The red pepper flakes you get in the store have the seeds in. Then again, I take the seeds out of my ajis because they have a soapy flavor I don't like when they dry. So I will go back to "it depends" :)

Years ago (12ish) I was grocery shopping in Italy. They had a bar code reader that you picked up where the carts were, put it in the BCR holder on your cart then scanned your items as you put them in the cart. When you checked out, the clerk downloaded your purchases and, I think, you could access your purchases online. When I got back home, I went to our IT department and invited a techie to lunch were I posed the idea of a hand held BCR reader for home use with software that allowed you to inventory your items as you put them in the pantry and refrigerator and again as you took an item out. He said it was doable but wouldn't work in the US as the demand to be organized wasn't strong enough to support such a product. I think now is the time--there must be "an app for that".

Sorry to say I am not at all surprised by RH's duplicity in pretending they are selling one of a kind rugs (or one of a kind anything, for that matter), or their incompetence in tracking their stock, their fake shipping dates and timely charging of your credit card. The company is a complete fraud, from the ground up, IMO. Honest catalog retailers state their wares are "unique" because the item being described is hand made and therefore the one that arrives may not look like the picture. RH seems to play fast and loose with that concept as their ad copy makes you believe that a featured item is truly the ONLY one like it. I always wondered how they could spend so much money showcasing single run new items or one of a kind vintage or antique things. Now it appears they have revealed their true business model to you. I always thought their brand appealed to the yuppie worst in us all. I include myself in that, I'm sorry to say. I have purchased a curtain rod from RH about seven years ago and probably would have bought other things as well, but after receiving their massive catalog missives decided not to do business with them any more.

If your new freezer is the chest type, organize foods in paper grocery sacks. This makes it easier to move a sack in order to get to another one. Food items are no longer toss salad.

I know right where you are. I bought one (same size, chest style) about 18 months ago at Best Buy. I had been wanting one for a long, long time. Like Annie, it did not take long to fill and I still struggle with finding space in it, but that's my fault for not being more realistic with my buying/cooking habits. I just can't pass up a good sale or those bulk items at Costco.I wished that I had room for a larger one. The only downside is that it is in need of a good defrosting, but I've got too much in there to do that.

I debated upright v. chest for quite some time.

Then I had to help a friend get his chest freezer unloaded because the motor crapped out. I quickly became an upright convert. :-)

I'm already making plans for how I'm going to organize things. I've been living with the mess in my fridge freezer for so long I don't want it to come to the same thing in the new one.

I recently bought baskets from the dollar store for my freezer. Printed out labels (for the front of each basket) and covered the front and back with sealing tape. It's fairly organized now. I love having a big upright and you will too!

Oh, boy, it's freezer fun time! We got ours about a year ago and I have been kicking myself for living so long without a freezer. Ours is upright and I can finally store all the garden produce, plus sale items, without making my refrigerator's freezer section bulge.
Warning--you may expand your vegetable garden. Freezing and stashing can become addictive!

I hear ya; my garden has been extended, as well! Again, I struggle with unrealistic expectations, but never the less, it's a fun and rewarding experience. It is challenging to figure out what you need to take out and cook so that you can get something more in!

Man, I have been SO tempted to get one. I am convinced things do not keep as well in the fridge-freezer compartments. Too much temp variance.

Congrats on the new freezer, you're going to love it.
I have a large upright, about 22 cubic ft. I am NOT the most organized person in the world but I do try to keep the shelves sectioned. Just give some thought as to your eating habits. Right now my top shelf is fish and seafood with veggie's on the right, second shelf is beef and more veggies, third shelf is pork and frozen doughs (puff pastry, phyllo, etc. Then I have a shelf for grocery store frozen stuff...like FF's, pizza, ice cream, etc.
Below that is my stash of local fruits, mostly blueberries, strawberries and cherries. The door shelves are saved for small items that are easily lost on the big shelves..
