Hello KTers!
Not sure anyone will remember me as it has been quite some time since I've stopped by. I started posting at the KT about 13 years ago and about 2 years ago, I stopped coming here so often. My name is Erin and I'm from PA. I'm almost always happily married (joke!)and I have 4 children. Two of my children are grown up and engaged and two are still at home. I work as a nurse and one of my hobbies includes beekeeping. Glad to be back at the KT!

I had an early Kent Stork called Blue Barry that was exceptional. I like the early AVs to trace ancestry, or for historical reasons, or scientific interest. I was not around in vintage days. I know some people who were. Knowing some of the vintage names has sparked some fascinating conversations when I mention them to people as memory joggers. This keeps the hobby interesting and is a way to track historical development. So many of today's hybrids are so derivative, so "me, too," and sport so consistently, they are not interesting, at least not to me. The saintpaulia ancestry project database is a good place to research genetic parents. I don't need to own the old ones. Photos are good enough. Some people do like to grow series or species. It would be interesting to know what people grow and why. This is part of the learning process for those of us who are relatively new and respect the work of early hybridizers. I appreciate people who know their violets and can tell me why a specific hybridizer's work is so important. Joanne

It took me many years to realize that not everyone loves what I love and I wonder how many times I gave someone something that they later gave or threw away. We who do arts and crafts think our creativity, cost of supplies and time spent are priceless but not so much do others agree. I've stopped giving unless there is a genuine interest shown by someone. Even then I hesitate since they might be just trying to be nice. I make quilts and I think they are just wonderful but others would look at them and wonder what kind of a complete idiot takes perfectly good (and expensive by the way) fabric and cut it up into all kinds and sizes of shapes and sew it back together again. I would rather that people just be honest about what they like and dislike so that we don't waste our "priceless" gifts on them in the first place.

2 kids are engaged? Wow. Glad things are well with you all, and I hope the bee/honey business prospers. What do bees do all winter, hibernate in their hives?

Hi, Erin, I will have to admit I didn't remember the name, but when you mentioned beekeeping, that rang a bell made my ears buzz.

Hi Erin,

I'm an oldster that's still here. I hope you post often, and about the bees, too.

I have a cousin in South Dakota who is an apiarist, as was our maternal grandfather. Wes has a beekeeping uncle who lost most of his hives to Africanization a few years back. Bees have always fascinated me; perhaps it's in my genes! (And I'm a Sherlock Homes fan to feed the flames.)

I have not put my interest into action other than reading two beekeeping books. I live in North Dakota so winters would be an issue. My cous takes his hives to California or Missouri for the winters.

Have you picked out your "mother of the bride/groom? ensemble yet! LOL It's never too early to plan.

What a warm welcome! Thanks all! I started beekeeping just a few years ago, but I have to admit, I'm hooked! The bees do hibernate in their hives during the cold months and they eat their stores of honey. When they run out, we supplement they with fondant. Usually you will lose 1 in 3 hives over the winter months. We lost one this year so we will need to split one of our other hives and start it again. It's fascinating to me and we give our honey away, we don't sell it. It's a fun hobby.

I haven't done any dress shopping because dates haven't been set. I think they're all taking their time which is fine with me. My oldest daughter, Samantha, is going to Germany this summer, so we've been tried to prepare for that.

Nita, I can't believe Bobby is 20!! Where does the time go?

Welcome home Erin! I was thinking about you just the other day, wondering how you and all the kids are doing. Would you believe Damien will be 10 this summer? And in Oct. I will be inheriting 2 more grandsons who are currently 7 & 12. Please check in more often, as we miss you!
