Long, hot, summer car trip and cats

There is a possiblity that I might have to take a long-ish car trip, 7-8 hours driving time, with both my cats in tow in the next month. August is usually pretty warm around here. I will be traveling alone, just me and the cats.

My concern is that on a trip of that length, I will need to stop a few times to get gas, use the bathroom, get something to drink, etc. Will the cats be OK in the car for 10-15 minutes? How fast does a small car heat up in the summer sun? What is the best way to handle unavoidable pit stops so that the cats don't die from the heat?

The cats hate their carriers, hate car travel and are not going to appreciate moving to a new home. But I doubt there is much I can do about that. I'd just like them to come through this alive.
