Rock Arch Over Stove

No responses in home building, so thought I'd try here...

This has to be more simple than our minds are conjuring up!! We are planning to install a vent insert over our stove. The piping is in place, we will purchase a 36" insert, and blower. What is the typical way to install one of these when no cabinet is being used? It will have a rock surround like in the link. Our entire opening will be 6', so what do people typically do to cover the openings on each side of the insert? I can't find photos looking up into one of these spaces other than when cabinets are used.

What sort of finish are you planning for that undersurface? It has to be fireproof to a certain degree, so check to see what exactly is required by your local code. Some folks use Hardibacker cement board and tile it. We built an all-plywood hood and tiled it. Some folks have a big piece of stainless custom-formed to fit.

Tile, plaster, etc, has to be finished before sliding the insert up into it so that the edges are covered nicely. Depending on the brand & model of your insert, you might find it helpful to use the 2-3" rectangular liners they often sell along with the inserts, which gives you a nice stainless-lined rectangular opening.

But you'll need to decide what the underside is going to look like: tile? Plaster? Your inspiration photo looks like it's 'tiled' with mortar and stone.

I found a few old photos of the hood we made -- it's a different style than what you're considering, but uses the same principles. Yours would simply be much wider (and possibly arched inside?) before inserting the innards.

Plywood frame with bottom tiled, then insert pushed up inside and attached:

I'm so frustrated that I can't see the pictures of Laura's rocks! I think this technique is exactly what I've been searching for. I want to make a couple of fake stone chairs that will be similar in shape to beanbag chairs, but with rock markings. I think the wire armature will work for me. I'll build it, then put something under it and sit on it to make the seat indentation! Then I'll add the quickcrete. Based on reading lots of websites about hypertufa, I was thinking I'd have to make the concrete or tufa much thicker than you've made yours. Am I right in thinking it's the fibers in the initial layer of quickcrete that make your structure strong enough to hold 400 lbs w/o after the armature is removed?

Pellet Stove vs Wood Stove

Hi All: My wife and I just became home owners of a nice 1920 3Br colonial 1450 Sq.ft. that has oil heat we want to put in a stove but are undecided on what type of fuel it will run on. Wood Pellet or coal. We live in Westchester county NY which is about 50 Min outside of NYC. Last winter we had 0 and low teen days. The house is not insulated and has 30 windows the with added single pane storm windows. We have looked at the Hearthstone Mansfield which is cast iron and soapstone (Would really love a Tulikivi masonry stove but way to costly all around install). Other stoves we looked at were the Harman TLC 2000 which can run on coal or wood. I have friends who heat with wood and pellet and I get mixed views some have had both, but all agree there is nothing like a real wood fire. But reality sets in I want to use the stove to heat my house. Any help out there would be great.

Ok. In order for the arch to be higher, the tanks would need to be much closer together if you put them on the inside of the panel. They might be hard to get between, to weed, etc. So I would suggest you put them on the outside of the arch.(one on each side). I don't know if you considered that already as the option and pretty much have the tanks where you want them, but it looks like you wouldn't be able to weed the tank on the right, if it is right near the fencing. Have you put any drainage holes in the bottoms of these tanks? Don't put too many in. I was using about 9 food-grade stock tanks and put waaaay too many holes in them and the water would drain out much too soon, and I have to water them about every other day......which is a drag. I've tried to plug some of the holes and they're doing a big better. But mine are up on some cement blocks, and not right on the ground. I love trellis gardening. I grow (in the ground) cucumbers on both sides of the trellis and they love it. I also use my kids old swing set with fencing up one side and over it and grow winter squash, and it seems to love growing upwards.

When I first started looking at hoods, I was interested in stone hoods. The 2 companies I looked most closely at were Old World Stone Works (www.oldworldstoneworks.com) and Francois & Co. Oh! PS: the inserts will unscrew and drop back down and out if you ever need to replace/repair - no need to rip out the tile or stone. :)

I'd suggest custom stainless. And a big CFM fan. You want something easy to clean in the area.
