Who make throw pillows?

This may be a really silly question -- I have fabric that I want to use for throw pillows; do I need to go to someone who specializes in upholstery to make a couple of pillows or would your average tailor be able to do teh job? How much should I expect to spend for an 18" pillow? Thanks.

You might also inquire at your local fabric store. They might know of seamstresses who do small projects. I have seen small ads posted on the bulletin board in some stores.

Well, even if revived by a spammer, it's still a useful topic. I find I'm incapable of making that "multiple designer pillows" look work. I've tried, but just can't pull it off. But we have multiple pillows because we actually use them. We read in bed and/or watch TV together, almost every night, in our MBR. When we decided to redo the MBR, one of the most expensive things we put in was a built-in storage headboard between the custom bookcases. After 25 yrs of stacking pillows on a bench I was tired of it. I wanted a slanted front where we could stack pillows 3-deep in comfort! This is the headboard unit right after it was installed (I replaced the crappy window blinds with a beautiful plantation shutter unit that I'm soooo happy with). It is sized for a CA King bed: The two storage compartments are identical, just reversed. The wider compartment fits a king-size pillow perfectly. Each will hold 2 fat pillows plus 1 smaller bedroll pillow. The smaller compartment is a great little cubbyhole for keeping little-used stuff accessible but out of sight:

Just a suggestion, but why not save up for what you really love? So many of us have had such a hard time with the backsplash and finding that perfect tile. It seems to me that since you found it, you should have it! Can you live with a painted backspash for a while? You don't need a backsplash to function in your kitchen.

A sofa should be deep enough that a throw pillows adds support where one needs it. A sofa should not have so many pillows that there is no room to sit. Throw pillow should be down - not even down/feather. Down squishes "just right". One can order them custom made online for very little. I adore Fortuny fabric. But the price is exorbitant! I finally had a client who wanted to use it for an antique settee and for roman blinds in her bedroom. Fortunately, the colors were perfect for me, too! Fortuny used to be priced by the yard but sold by the repeat, and the repeats were often 46" - huge waste of fabric. So, I bought her "waste" fabric at a very good price, and now I have Fortuny pillows on my sofa. Bought the fabric for a 3rd Fortuny prints on eBay - huge bargain and yes, it was genuine - had the markings on the selvage.

Melissa, We would LOVE to help you here! Custom pillow solutions is our LIFE!! <3 Is there any way we could see the 1) print, 2) sofa, 3) your pillow options, and finally 4) your space? As you well know, balance is a tightrope and with a project like you have getting a visual on your space and the coordinating piece(s) is an absolute MUST. Knowing where to start (your style) within the vast range out there plays the biggest key in unlocking the right path to finding options for you. An upholstery shop could certainly do it, as could any drapery workroom. You might get a better rate if you called a fabric store (Hancocks, JoAnne's, etc.) and asked if they could recommend someone. If you buy an 18" pillow insert, you would only have to pay for labor. The insert could be down or polyester, which would affect your costs.

Heck, I'd ask a friend/relative/neighbor who has a sewing machine to whip me up a couple of pillows. It's nothing to do and won't cost you much. I wouldn't think it would be major enough of a project to take to an upholstery shop.

Oh, honey, do it yourself; or ask a friend. I wish I could do it for you! Do you want to sew? Find a local fabric store that gives lessons and do it yourself; a whole new world will be open to you! If you find that you hate sewing, at least you have your pillows.
You can expect to pay way more than necessary for a retailer to put some pillows together for you.
If you have a sewing machine (I'm guessing you don't, but if you do), ask us or go to the sewing forum -- they'll talk you through it.
I'm always trying to get people into getting it done without seeking professional help if it isn't necessary and pillows are a good place to start.

Hee. You all clearly think I'm more competent than I am! I do appreciate the encouragement - I just love this fabric so much, I'd be scared I'd do something wrong and screw it all up. But maybe I will check around and see if I can't talk someone into helping out. I'd sure love to save the money...

You will not screw it up! It's just two squares (most often), any size you want. But, on the off chance that you do screw it up -- It's just fabric! If you have a friend that can help and encourage you to get your pillows done -- that's what friends are all about. Just do it (but stay in touch).
