Planted both plants about 20" apart where they get mid afternoon shade. 1st summer they grew and bloomed OK but this year they went crazy. 5' tall, covered in good foliage with tons of beautiful blooms. The blooms aren't big but in the spring and fall they get some good size to them. If you order this beauty, order 2 and plant fairly close together for a great effect. Comments (30)Oh, thank you all so much! N and I were having a glass of wine in our new (but still non-operational) kitchen and enjoying the stone. We're still camping out upstairs, in my studio, which is equipped with a little fridge and a sink and a butane powered single burner stove. It's a little like being students again. But the soapstone has really made the kitchen feel like a kitchen. We are delighted with our choice, and we appreciate your comments so much. No charge to come over, Cindaintx (but here we consider oursleves to be in the southwest, at least of our province, Ontario). VictorNYC, I do think our prices are inflated in Canada, but if I deduct the sills, which were about 1K, our price per sq' installed was about $110. It's definitely steep, but about neck in neck with a premium marble or stainless steel (at least here, where we have few suppliers). Dianalo, the veining is a little like lightning, or something delicious. The veining is a little "chubby", 10KDiamond, and moreso than in our sample. We didn't choose the precise slabs--just the variety, so the result has been a really great surprise for us. We would encourage any of you soapstone fence sitters to jump on over. We're really delighted. I have word that the marble for the island will be installed on Wednesday. I will post more photos when that happens. Thank you all--especially those of you who encouraged us to go with soapstone. Now that it's in place, we can't believe we considered anything else. I've liked it for so long and I didn't think of other alternatives. I'm such a novice when it comes to counter tops and I'll look into honed granite. I love that look. My neighbor has a green distressed island, which looks more like furniture and its exquisite. My DH on the other hand does not like that look. Didn't fab on site, but as Joshua says....Scott's team love what they do. Dave and Zach were well...the best! and you too Joshua .

14 years agolast modified: 9 years agoFarmgirl - I live in New England, Western Mass. I had Dorado Soapstone from Shrewsbury fabricate in my yard. They did a a great job. Set up in the driveway and did everything right here. They started about noon and were finished around 6pm installing about 35 sq. ft. Dave, the owner, and his son did the fabrication.

This was a truly wonderful process. We have been so lucky with our contractor, Darryl Davis and his team. They worked well with Scott and Doug from Bucks County Soapstone. Doug came last week to template the counter top and Darryl was here to participate. Together they talked out the issues of level and install. Darryl came up with the idea of replacing the vertical wood at the end of counter with vertical soapstone and Doug agreed - you'll see the result.Our kitchen is an interior one, resulting from the original 1950's house. The previous owner added a big family room that is two steps down from the kitchen, which looks out into it. But the door into the DR is still the old one which made it trickly to figure out the new counter top. We wanted a place for people to sit and talk with the cook (me) and also to use for serving for parties but still needed to get into the DR. So we cut down the small raised part and crossed our fingers.
We considered both 9 in overhand and a 12 in one- i really did not want to see corbels- doug figured out that he could embed steel rods and give us the 12 inch. I was pretty worried about how that would look and so we traded lots of emails and images over the next few days - Doug was very patient with my questions. I decided to go with his recommendations - and am delighted.
Dave and Zach showed up right on time this past wednesday. YOu'll see in the pix the stone on the truck - was very exciting to finally see it arrive. They carefully loaded it onto a little wagon (i swear it was a modified red wagon) and pulled it over the grass and into the kitchen, then put the first piece in. It fit perfectly along the edges because of the templating. Then the rest came in and they began to work on the level, seams, sink, etc.
It was pleasure to watch these craftspeople work with such care and professionalism. And, Florida Josh, Dave and Zach said to say hello!
I also liked watching them sand the seams etc because I realized that I would be able to do that for any future scratches.
What I did not expect was how beautiful the gray unoiled stone is! Ours is sparkley under the light - and I just love it. So although I thought I'd always oil it, i suspect I'll do what others have suggested - oil it sometimes but let it lighten as well.
Oh, and faucets - turned out my first choice, Kohler Simplice, was perfect- and not too tall at all. Thanks for the reassurance. I did end up buying 3 other faucets to try because I was so unsure - now have to returns.
So here it is- our new soapstone. We never would have ended up here with learning from GW and finding Bucks County Soapstone- and working with Bucks County was just fabulous. They are craftsmen, and take care with their customers. We could not be happier!
