Changing out the cushions on a couch? (Pics)

I'm thinking of possibly taking off the back cushions on my big sectional and replacing them with maybe some large pillows? I'd like to refresh the unit because it's still in pretty good condition but the back cushions are a little out of shape. Any ideas on what might work here and/or how to find them? Here are a few pics... Ignore the wall color as it is now BM Lenox Tan (a medium neutral taupe color)... The sectional is a (hobnail?) chenille with shades of brown and black.

Your sofa really looks nice. I have another idea to consider: just purchase new foam for the back cushions, cut them to shape using an electric knife, then wrap them in poly for a little softness, and restuff. This really is an easy solution. I've done it myself.

seasandsand... I hadn't really thought of that. I suppose that is all that's in there, huh? Perhaps that would work well. I have a family of kids and dh that have no regard for how they are pushing/pulling/squashing these cushions. After 5 or 6 years, it's getting obvious.

Thanks for the tip... is there anything else I need to know? I specific type of foam?

Good point. "Support" can be a good thing, no doubt. The main user of this piece will be my teenage son, however, who wants something he can really sink into! BTW, the leather sectional I'm referring to is by Natuzzi. Just about decided to buy it--now that I know I can soften up the seating. Any idea how much I might expect to spend at the upholsterer? The two cushions on the sleeper part are sewn together--so no potential gapping issue. The softer the foam, the more that happens, right? The attached chaise seat is plenty cushy. To get the two parts to sit similarly would be a plus. Link to product below. Thoughts? Appreciate your input! I am frustrated that I can't get an accurate color for the pictures of the fabric samples I have. Every picture I take washes out the colors. Outsideplaying, I have samples in both green and the gold/ brown you have suggested. They seem to work well with my rug. I also have a bold stripe that might work for an accent piece. If I go with a fabric as opposed to leather what combination of sofa, love seat or chairs would you use and what combination of colors and patterns would make for an interesting room.Should I stick with the roll arm sofa style in my previous post or would a different style work better. Here is one of my stripe fabric sample .....again the color is not accurate but I'm wondering if the scale of pattern will work in the room. The colors in the fabric sample match perfectly with with my rug. Both the rug and the sample have chocolate browns, bronzes and rust colors in addition to the gray green and black. I may switch to a different camera to see if that makes a difference.

We purchased a very similar sofa this past November - same color/t-cushions. I rotate the cushions but I have a feeling they will eventually wear flatter on the non-t side. No issues with napping or the color w/ DH and two cats. In fact, I took a nap the very first day - probably before the delivery guys even made it to the end of the road! The cushions are under warrantee for 3 years so if I have to replace them, I will. It sure beats the heck out of our last sofa - square cushions that had to be replaced within 6 months. It was like sitting on the ground. :( FWIW, our new sofa is the Chesapeake from Thomasville. The cushions are much more dense/firm that the previous Clayton Marcus

mitch - still waiting for solid tan and a floral sample from FabricGuru. If those don't work out, I think I am going with the solid dark green that I posted above in the very last set of pictures, probably with the floral throw pillows as shown on the settee even though that's not an outdoor fabric. Hopefully the dark (olive?) green won't show the dirt (or other junk) too much. I'm keeping the bold striped cushions that I think you like, since they're outdoor cushions, and even though the green doesn't match, they're going to be on the other side of the porch. I wish I could just find outdoor cushions that fit the other pieces (n matching stripe would be nice) but 1) I think those cushions are a few years old so pattern no longer available) and 2) other chairs are bigger so cushions are too small, the settee also seems to be an odd (smaller) size - 40" wide instead of 44". Thanks for the tip about light-colored Sunbrella, though, I had been considering that (thinking they'd be easy-clean even if they were light) after seeing "Antique Beige Canvas" and "Flagship Papyrus" in Calico Corners the w/e.

When I changed out mine, I just went to the larger fabric store that has a foam department and selected foam the depth of the cushion covers. Then I used the cushion cover as a pattern leaving enough space to wrap with the polyester. Good luck.

I would just refresh the foam as well. You may want to look into a dense foam for longevity. I think you've done well with a family's use for 5 or 6 years. They don't look bad at all, so the existing foam is probably decent quality.

I just restuffed ours too. We went with feather/down. I bought some inexpensive feather/down pillow inserts in various sizes and stuffed them in until it looked right.

You can also get cushions from the manufacturer. That sofa looks alot like my flexsteel one - I think it was the Vale or Vail model.

Anyways, I found out that you can contact the manufacturer and order new back cushions.

Caroleoh... It's a Bauhaus USA... a division of la-z-boy... Not real expensive furniture, but has worn extremely well. Especially considering I absolutely LIVED in the corner of it day and night for about 3 months after my twins were born. I was nursing and had fussy babies (sorry if TMI).

Anyhow... Did you order new full cushions or just inserts?

Just the inserts. I guess you could do new cushions, but I'd be worried that the fabric wouldn't match. I'm sure Bauhaus would replace the cushions. Where did you buy the sofa from? I'd give them a call and find out if they can get a price and order them for you from Bauhaus.

Another idea I had was to go to a local reupholstry shop and ask them how much to replace the cushions. I think if you use the sofa alot, it's worth the extra $$ to get the cushions done right. I've done foam cushions for patio furniture and it's hard to get the foam cut straight and then you have to wrap it in the fiberfil stuff so the foam doesn't stick to the fabric etc...
