I am irritated at the WV roads!!!!!!

Last Saturday I had to get the windshield replaced on my 2008 Rabbit because of all the gravel they put out for the snow and ice. Tonight, I was taking a classmate home and got another chip in the glass. It is a $250 deductible for each windshield (or $505 out of pocket)!!!!

You would think they would have found something a little more chip resistant in the past 100 years of cars!

Since August I have put about 12,000 miles on the car- at this rate I will probably have to get the windshield replace a couple times a year!!!!

Janie, That sure can be irritating as well as expensive. When I had to drive almost 100 mile round trips every day to get to work and back I cannot even remember how many pings and cracks I got on my windshield. At first I tried to keep them repaired or replaced, but after a couple of years I only replaced them if the cracks were in a spot that would keep the car from going through ispection. Since we've moved to the city I haven't had a single piece of gravel thrown onto my window. Good luck to you.

Blutarski, we may argue many points of just what is meant by certain requirements; lignt among them. Light, properly diagnosed, should be, in my opinion, expressed in foot candle power. The light from the sun in June is about 3 times what it is in December. Low light---and that term describes plants that can take a lower intensity and do well. But, when the light comes from the sun and the position of said light causes drastic reduction in what the lower light conditions give, then we must make other arrangements. We move plants from place to place or room to room to give them the light we can arrange. At this time of season, a low-light requirement for a plant is one that can be provided by a northern exposure. Put directly into a window that faces north (north west or north-east) may bring the plant around. Fluorescent lighting is often thought to be 'enough'. It may very well be if it is within reasonable intensity close to the plant. But often, most offices have such lighting way up there on the ceiling and the light sprectrum needed by plants is just too low and not enough of it. If such light were brought down and could remain "on" longer than the average 8 hours a day....a plant may get along---poorly ...but may live until better conditions are arranged. Office plants are suggested to be the kind that sit under a large skylight--much like the malls provide....or the plant is of size that fits...sits...on the desk and a proper light source be directed on them. The aralia is a plant that likes bright light. The fluorescent light up there on the ceiling is not what I'd describe as one that suits. Better to take that plant home and pick yourself one that is smaller and takes up room on your desk.

If you are going to have a greenhouse that you need to use in colder temps, please think about installing a simple geothermal system (dig down into the ground, insert some plastic tubing that will vent into the greenhouse) and let the temperature of the earth maintain stasis inside. You can also put any large water containers around the outside or in the center of the inside, painted black to collect more heat during the day. Extending and improving the function of your greenhouses will become a necessity in the coming years. Google "geothermal heat for greenhouses" - you'll get a zillion hits. While you're at it, Google "permaculture". You'll need that knowledge for the future as well. When this country reaches 9 billion population (we are at 7.5 now), we will top out our ability to feed everyone. You should know how to grow your own and hopefully have some left over for others.

First layer of the roof is completed. Picture below shows the roof before a layer of material was put on to make it waterproof. This layer is made of 2x6 tongue and groove white pine and is what we'll see on the inside of the house. There will be rigid foam, wood sheeting and shingles going on top. The 2x6's on the right hand side extending over the edge of the roof haven't been cut to fit in the first picture. This is the view from the inside, note the beams have one coat of stain, this was done before they were set in place. The view is looking up towards the loft from the Great Room. There will be a bedroom and bath against the far wall but the loft will be just about 20' long and extends over the kitchen. I just went and got a bottle of Vetericyn at Petco and we will see. It's like they are almost healed up and she'll lick one of them during the night and BAM it's all festered up again. I keep them covered with a sock bandaged up but she will just chew it off if she wants to and I can't watch her 24/7. It seems like everything I put on them makes them worse and not better. So far the Vetericyn seems to be helping ALREADY! Brownthumbia, which variety of this do you use? There were several different kinds. I was able to find ONE bottle of the wound and infection variety in the whole town! GAH! If this does work as well as it seems, I'm going to buy some on line for cheaper. The bottle was $37 for 8 oz.! ACK! But if it works...hey, I've already spend a ton on meds that don't work. OH and the goldenseal....SHE LICKS IT RIGHT OFF TOO even though it's bitter as all get out! I just got it last night so I haven't been able to see if it's going to work or not. Right now I need something more medicinal such as that Vetericyn spray. I put a small dab on goldenseal on my tongue and holy cow, that's about the most bitter taste I've even come in contact with...how the heck can a dog lick that...ugh! Crazy! LMAO!

I've had some really big chips welded for fifty dollars.

It is frustrating though.

A rock fell out of the back of a dumptruck and hit my car's windshield on the driver's side. The chip is as big as my fist. I thought it was coming through! The weld has held though. I'll replace the windshield when it won't pass inspection. Until then? It stays. I can't afford to do anything else.

They couldn't patch this one, it has started sending toward the driver's view.

And of course, the chip tonight was almost directly in front of my eyes!

I need to read up on WV law to find out exactly how picky they are about the cracks. I will definitely wait until this one gets LOTS bigger before doing anything about it! I just now got the glue smell out of the car from this weekend- imagine riding inside a Sharpie marker and you would have the smell. :-((((

janie you havn't seen roads till you drive up here in mi! we have potholes that can bend a frame! some of the hole are 6-8" deep, and everywhere!

at least your roads are still being "dressed"...as of last week we're praying for no more snow. most towns/counties have run out of salt! a product that normally sells for $49 a ton, is now going for over $200!

I got 2 chips in my Tahoe windshield in Mo. I actually ducked when the rock hit the windshield as it scared the poo out of me! It was thrown out of a tire of a passing car.....Makes me sooo mad cuz I know this summer heat it will probably start cracking....STacy

Glad to know I'm not the only one with a chipped windshield. However, I love, love, love West Virginia and its roads. I was in Beckley this weekend and will be returning next month (April 7th) to give a talk at Tamarack.

Anyone wanna come? :)

That is an unusually high price for a windshield.
Mine was replace in my driveway for less than half of what you paid. The car is only two years old and it really pained my at first to have to replace a part with aftermarket.

Are you getting a VW part or aftermarket windshield?

You may find that the VW and the aftermarket windshield are made by the same manfacturer.

I got a windshield for the old Ford van a few years ago at a rather close but out-of-town auto wrecker's (sorry - "recycler"'s) for $65.00, picked it up, took it to the installer's to be put in for $55.00 ...

... and when I handed him a $50.00 and a $20.00 - he handed back the $20.00!

Did I kick?
