second dog and housetraining

I have another question concerning the second dog that we brought home two weeks ago.

Our first beagle, Pebbles gave us some problems by going in the house when we first got her 6 months ago,but that stopped after the first week. Since then we were having no problems before we brought home our second beagle Ani. Now Pebbles, she is 3 yes old, is going in the house again. She is even doing it right in front of us.

The two dogs seem to be getting along, they play together and seem to enjoy each other company. I am at a loss at why Pebbles is doing this and how to stop it. So, if anyone has any ideas, I am all ears. Thanks

First things first - check her for a UTI. You should be able to drop the sample off at the vets if cost is a concern (therefore avoiding the visit fee unless the test shows a problem and you need to bring her in).

If that checks out ok, it's most likely stress. Even good stress and excitement is still stress, and a new housemate is a big change. And if they are playing together that stimulates the bladder/bowels, so she may not even realize she has to go out. I'd take her outside for potty breaks more frequently and watch carefully for potty signals (circling, sniffing, whining, etc.). Some dogs can be quite subtle in their signals - one of my dogs will scratch at the door, while the other will just stand up and look at me (took me a while to get the hint!).

I've been there, done that.

I have three large females, the youngest was brought into the house two years ago. Because I already had a total of three females a few months prior to the pup coming along, I knew very well what I was getting myself in to. I was fully prepared to do what was needed to stay on top of things.

I would rule out a UTI and watch for potty signals. Stress is probably the problem, but one never knows.

I've house trained many dogs, and it's my opinion (not shared by some) that pee is pee, and poop is poop. When it's in the house, it stinks and stains.

A systematic approach to house training is best, that way you know what is going on.

If this continues, and assuming there is no medical issue, you may find yourself backing up completely and starting all over in the potty department for your older dog. After all, she is three years old, but acting like a 3 month old pup.

I forgot something important: When a dog is moved to a new home, there is sometimes a period of adjustment. The dog is in a 100% new environment, and has no idea of the rules in his or her new home. Previously housebroken dogs may not be housebroken at first. (this happened to me.) Dogs that were allowed to sleep in the bed might not be allowed to in the new home. Dogs allowed to bark their heads off in the yard might not (hopefully!) be allowed to in the new home. Be patient and lovingly firm to train your new dog as to what is and isn't acceptable in your home. Take a 4 day weekend or a week off to spend a lot of time with the dog when you get him or her if possible. Dogs have an amazing capacity to adjust and become a perfect member of their new family.

So here's an update, we've had this little monster for 2 months now. She is never out of our sight and is still peeing and pooing in the house. She'll find any two seconds that we turn our head to wizz in the house. She finally started going outside when we take her out in the morning. (She is crated at night and when we are out.) We take her out every 30 minutes when we're home, but she still rarely go's wizz outside, pooping is a lot better though. She rarely has a poop inside. We've spent 2 hours with her in the back yard waiting for a wizz, but she'll just lay in the sun or try to start playing with us. We had hoped she would learn from our other adult dog, but to no avail. We're hating this because we'd like her to be able to enjoy running around the house with the other dog but she can't because she is always tied to us or barricaded in the same room with us. My wife has had good cries wondering what we are doing wrong. We've had the vet check her out and she found nothing wrong, in fact she said the little puppy is very healthy and unusually well built and trim for her breed, mostly due to her 3 times daily walks we assume. Although she has never once peed or pooed while on a walk, even on the couple 2 hour walks we've been on. What ARE we doing wrong? We want this little girl to start living a more free extistence, not at the end of a leash or behind a chunk of plywood.

It's great that you are considering rescuing this little dog, and I can't think why being blind would affect housetraining. For that matter, I actually doubt being blind would make the poor dog more likely to get hit than her predecessors; dogs don't generally bother to "look both ways" before crossing the road; if they avoid cars at all, it's because they hear them coming, rather than see them. But, after you rescue this one, your neighbor is going to get other dogs and they will get hit. You (and your soft-hearted husband) might as well start wrapping your hearts and minds around that truth, or you will wind up just as heartbroken over the neighbor's next dog. My mother and her boyfriend do not take the greatest care of their pets. They live in the country, let them run, mostly keep them outside, etc, and they mostly wind up getting hit by cars. (yes, I've pointed out my feelings about this). I deal with it by reminding myself that (mostly) the animals came from the pound or are feral strays, and she generally gets older animals who are less likely to be adopted anyway, so they are still getting a couple more years out of life than they probably would have without my mother. sigh. It's not perfect, but I have to live with my mother, and you have to live with your neighbor...

I also adopted a dog with "issues." A one year old (now 3 yrs old) australian shepherd mix. i dont know what her story is but she tore up shoes, carpet, walls, cell phones, couches, and urinated, etc, for the first year. At first i punished her. I crated her (she tore up the crate), told her she was 'bad', etc. Well, I realized this wasnt helping. I was only increasing her anxiety. so i tried an indirect approach.We started obedience training and trick training (i read books about dogs with anxiety, watched other dog trainers, and talked to other dog owners). I ignored her bad behavior. I left her bags, old boxes, with treats in them for her to tear up. And she would either spend hours playing at the river, going on walks, or to an indoor uncaged doggie day care where she could get all her anxiety out. It helped her tremendously to have me leave her for a little while at a time and realize i was coming back. she was extremely shy at first but leaving her at the doggie day care increased her confidence ten fold. the obedience training let her know i was in charge and helped her feel more secure. Teaching her tricks helped me see how she thinks and learn to communicate with her in a fun and positive way. And one last change was I got her a cat to keep her company while I'm gone. Its been over a year since she's torn anything up or urinated in the house. My dog certainly needed training but i found out so did i. I know my dog well now. She's my baby and she was worth it. i hope you have luck with your puppy.

Congratulations on your new arrival :)

Stress and excitement are good candidates for reasons. It's an exciting time to have a new playmate around 24/7. Keep a close eye on them when they do go outside for a potty break.

We've fostered and doggy-sat a few dogs now and our pup LOVES having company; however, just like a little kid sometimes all that fun means he over-looks the important things like eating, sleeping and going potty!

Our little guy would be having so much fun romping around outside with his new buddy that he'd forget to do his business. 20 minutes later he'd be in a panic to go out OR just not make it. Entirely our fault for watching the wrong dog!

With one particular foster it became a matter of separate potty breaks before playtime -Just to make sure everyone did what was needed. Just waaaay too much puppy play energy and nothing got done, so to speak.
