Phorbin-question on your two color crown moldings

Hi! I sent you a question on your beautiful kitchen-but u might not see it because everyone is commenting on it-it is stunning!! I have a question about how you seemed the cream crown with the walnut? they appear to be the same height-my designer said if I keep them both to the ceiling it doesn't look right when the two colors meet, but I don't want to stagger the cabs.Any advise??? Tks!! Michelle

Maybe Phorbin will be along later to explain, but I have an idea it's because the crown on the walnut cabinet isn't the same as the "crown" on the cream cabinets.

Look at this photo where they meet.

Another thing is that the cream trim is mostly flat except for the very top, and that part is higher than the walnut crown.

I think that's why it goes together without looking odd.

Thanks to everyone who responded with their pictures and comments. Mavsfan, those ceilings are looking fantastic! I think the different designs you've used throughout your new home give it such character and charm. I really appreciate the pictures. Wonbyherwits, the molding in your room is beautiful. Our builder uses what they refer to as double crown molding because of the "wow" factor and also because he feels with the higher ceilings, a single piece of crown gets lost in the shuffle. After seeing how you added the extra four inches to your molding and the effect you get from it, his opinion is one I would echo and do the same in our home. Worthy, after hearing of your experience, I think we'll go ahead with the crown and have it installed now than adding it later and ending up incurring additional costs (we all know how easily that happens and how quickly those $$$ add up). Speaking of $$$, do you have any idea what it might cost or should cost approximately to add a coffered ceiling to a 14' x 19' dining room. It is rectangular in shape so there are not unusual cuts if that would be a factor. Thanks for any help you can give us. Luckymom, the trim work in the pic you posted is droolworthy and has given me a few more ideas--thanks!

Yes, this is the way to do it, especially if you have intricate molding or dentil molding. Lay the pieces out over sawhorses, then prime and paint. Once installed, you just have to go back and touch up your nail holes and any smudges or splinters. Much easier job than painting the whole molding.

You may want to post your question on the Home Decorating forum. I think you'll get a lot more response. The base molding often matches the trim around your doors and windows and crown molding color can vary depending on the wall color. Posting pics of your cabinets and flooring will help. Thanks for all the help. I'm adjusting my mind to the idea of a really dark ceiling and trying to imagine how the room will look when the room isn't being used as a "theater". I probably should have said in my original post that this our general rec room and will probably also act as the grandchildrens' "dorm" at some point. This room also has two windows and a glass door to a porch. I was planning on using white plantation shutters in the rest of the house and I don't think the white plantation shutters will work well for light control. Since these windows will be very visible from the street do you think it's important to keep the window treatments uniform or can I do something different on these windows from the rest of the house? I'm definitely way out of my comfort zone on this and any help will be appreciated.

I'm not Phorbin, but I have a similar stained "hutch" built into a wall of painted cabinetry, so maybe I can help you get some ideas. I worried a little about this as a concept, but had my lumber supplier mill maple and quartersawn oak crown to the same profile. The painted and stained cabs are the same height and the crowns meet at inside mitered corners. To me it looks great. The awkwardness I worried about just isn't an issue.

Nutherokie- i can not thank you enough for that!!!!!!I have been stressing over this, as I really want my end pieces in the grey and the middle white.I kind of thought if it is done right it will be okay, esp. since my end pieces will stick out more thn the middle, as yours does.The ends will be 24 all the way up( one a frig, one a pantry-and then I'll have the 15' uppers inbetween.I will print this out for the cabinet maker!! THANKS!! MARTI- thank you as well for taking the time to post that pix and point that out, I will ask him which works better for my kitchen.This forum is sooo helpful! Michelle
