counter stools-wood or metal pros & cons

Tell me about (or show me) your kitchen counter stools - wood or metal? Memory swivel or no? Fabric or leather? What do you like about them? What don't you like? How do you keep them from scratching the floor? If wood, does the foot rest get scratched or dented?

I need to replace our counter stools since hardwood flooring will be going in next week. Hardwood will have the micro-bevel. Hardwood is all new to me- always had laminate and vinyl before.

We have wood memory stools on laminate floors.

The wood stools get dented where they meet the counter top (WilsonArt edging) when pushed in.

I used to have felt under the feet, but it was too much effort to push in the stools. I have since installed nylon/plastic feet under the wood legs. These have nails in them to fix them in place (which I don't like) so we'll have to keep an eye and make sure that they don't come through the nylon, and gouge the laminate.

When shopping for the stools, I didn't find the metal stools to be as comfortable; the lack of dense foam. Our friends also have metal, stools, and no thanks.

I think if the stools are wood, then they may get damaged from the counter-top (and we're not particular hard on the furniture, but from time to time there are others in the house)

And conversely, if the stools are metal, then the counter-top may become damaged (depending on the counter-top material), or the paint(?) covering the metal.

I can't help you with the wood flooring, I have no experience with that, but the larger diameter the feet, the less the weight of the chair and occupant will effect the wood floor, me thinks. And, ... the type of wood on the floor.

We have antique pine, which is soft, but they were distressed when we got them anyway and the few dings only add character. Used Good Stuff for Wood - purchased here (copy/paste): http://mapleblock.com/detail/butcher-block-finishes-39/ It's FDA approved/food safe, but we don't cut on the wood. Hm....off to google 'rectified porcelain.' When I said 'standard 4-inch,' I meant 'the medium small tile size you find in bathrooms and all over the ready-to-go tile aisle at Home Depot.' ;-) I can't even begin to date my current kitchen--I don't think it's original to the house (which would have been 1958-ish), but beyond that it's hard to say. I like the look of the 24" tiles, and the shaping around the corner sink is really awesome. I shall follow your link....

Well , if it’s just for occasional utility use either fine. If for dining I prefer upholstered stools ( probably because I haven’t much padding on my derrière .... :)

I have had two of them for the last 12 years and they’ve held up fine. Sometimes crumbs get pushed around the edges when cleaning the countertop but it’s not a big deal. The black finish has rubbed off the top of the button and exposed a silver color, mainly from being rubbed with a sponge. The buttons, on occasion, get stuck depressed when running the garbage disposals. I have to push them down a few times to get them to pop back up and released again.
