Hot water Heater Pilot Light going out

Hi

Recently we had our furnace replaced. The old furnace used the same flue as our hot water heater which I believe was a 6 inch flue.

The new furnace required it's own venting system so the the hot water heater was now using the old flue by itself.

However the 6" flue needed to be changed to a 4" ducting to meet code. From the water heater we now have a 4" duct going up above the WH and then makes a right angle turn for about 2 feet. It then makes another right angle turn towards the ceilng and enters the old 6" duct about 1 foot below the ceiling and continues up through the roof of the garage for a total of 5 feet.

Since that time the pilot light keeps going out. Since this started happening immediately after the mods, I suspected the venting as the problem.

The heating company said that was not likely the problem and said they would replace the thermocouple and cleaned the burner. That was done but did not resolve the problem.

The heater is about 9 years old and appears to be otherwise in good health. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

regards

David
