Dogs develop hemolytic anemia if they eat enough garlic. The quantity required is high enough that dogs can generally tolerate small doses without any problem and moderate amounts without clinically apparent disease, though there may be measurable changes on lab test results. There doesn't seem to be any consensus on how much is too much and I avoid garlic, onion and their powders when making homemade food for my dogs. The below recipe is nice, but must be stored appropriately.

BROWNIES

Cook up 1 C rice & 1 C barley (or 2 C rice if you don't have barley)
Once the grain is cooked, mix together with:
12-16 oz ground chicken
3 carrots (grated finely)
1 apple (grated finely)
2 pounds zucchini (grated finely)
1 pound pumpkin or yams (canned type or raw grated)
1/2 Cup raw fresh or frozen chopped spinach, kale, or swiss chard
2 eggs
1 tsp molasses (optional)
1 T. dried parsley (or a handful of chopped fresh)

(Mixture will be sloppy at this point)
Blend in enough whole wheat (if no allergies) or rice flour (about 2 C) that dough is soft but not wet.

Spread dough about a quarter-inch thick on baking sheets, using your hands or the back of a large spoon. (Use non-stick pans or spray pans with non-stick cooking oil.)

Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes, then remove from oven and score into squares with pizza cutter.

Return to oven and bake for 40 to 50 minutes more, or until edges and underside are light brown.)
Remove from oven, lift away from pans with spatula, then let cool to room temperature and separate the brownies. These treats will be moist and chewy.
(If you want crunchy treats, return brownies to oven at 200 degrees for about an hour after they've initially cooled. Check often to get desired texture.)

Once cooked, keep brownies refrigerated. They'll keep fresh about a week this way. Brownies also can be frozen for later use.

The raw dough freezes well too. Portion it into plastic zip bags in convenient amounts and freeze flat. Thaw overnite in fridge and bake as above.

The original recipe called for 1-4 cloves of garlic, crushed. I eliminated that ingredient.
Then again, garlic may be some sort of natural coyote repellent, so I'm sure you'll want to investigate further. Wouldn't want the new puppy to suffer the same fate as your cats, especially since you like to avoid the vet at all cost.

Garlic will not repel anything, not fleas, not coyotes, coyotes are scavengers and will eat just about anything, including garlic soaked chicken... I know there are many ways to make hard cookies for the dogs, you might want to contact 3 dog bakery and ask for a good one involving chicken

Wait -- are you saying diatomaceous earth when you say DE? I use it for flea control. Please advise how you're using it for worm control. Also, I'm not aware of "food grade." ??? I'm aware of the swimming pool grade, which is a no-no, and the plant nursery grade, which is what I use for fleas. Can you explain please?

As for the Diatomaceous Earth, you MUST have the food grade (not pool) for ingesting. It will say CODEX on the label and is often called 'fossil flour'. We get ours in 25# bags and use it in all animal feed as well as piles for the chickens to dust bathe in. We put it in the cat's ears and dust them regularly to repel/kill ear mites, fleas and ticks.

The natural worming comes from mixing it in the feed which is why the cats get their tuna treat once a week. They don't like it on their dry food. Farmer's use it for all of their animals and many people put it in orange juice and drink it themselves to get rid of internal parasites. (Don't care to do that because it tastes very gritty.) Do an internet search and you will find all sorts of information.

Garlic in very small amounts is fine, and most cookie recipes use 1/2 a teaspoon or so.

Here is a simple peanut butter cookie recipe, my dogs love it:
1 cup unsweetened natural peanut butter (I get this pretty cheap at a bulk food store)
1 cup skim milk (I used 1%, and you can use water if your dog is lactose intolerant)
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder

Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Mix together peanut butter and milk until smooth.
Mix baking powder and flour together, then gradually add to the peanut butter mixture.
Knead until dough is smooth.
Roll out to 1/4" thick and cut with cookie cutters (you can do thinner for crispier cookies).
Place on GREASED cookie sheet (I use parchment paper, no grease) and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Here's another dog cookie recipe, this time a cheese one. I have to admit, they smelled so good when I first made them that I had to try one. :D They were not bad, with a little salt and maybe some rosemary they'd make a tasty biscuit for the humans too!

1/3 cup olive oil
3 cups flour
1 cup grated cheese
1/2 cup powdered skim milk
1/4 tsp garlic powder (I usually use 1 tsp)
2/3 cup water, room temp
1 egg, beaten

1. In a large bowl mix oil, flour, and grated cheese.
2. In a small bowl dissolve powdered skim milk & garlic powder in water & whisk in beaten egg.
3. Make a well in the flour mixture & gradually stir in egg mixture until well blended.
4. Knead dough on a floured surface about 3-4 min, until dough sticks together and is easy to
work with.
5. With a rolling pin, roll dough to around 1/4" thickness.
6. Cut with biscuit cutter & place on lightly greased baking sheet (I use parchment paper instead of greasing).
7. Bake 50 minutes at 325F
8. Cool on a rack until hard and store, at room temp, in a container with a loose-fitting lid.
