They got home mid afternoon today with Baby Alyssa. This morning early they asked me if I could come and stay and help them. I have packed up some night things and my laptop and I am here. Cheryl and I first shopped for a few groceries and we also looked for some preemie clothes. Not much to be found in our K Mart, but we will make do. I gathered up all the store bought blankets I had and homemade ones and have them all here and washed up. Mike and Kevin put together the Pac and Play for the baby. The baby seems to like it, has a vibrating feature and music too. The baby seems to be getting a good start on the breastfeeding. Everyone is pretty tired, so will see how the first night home goes. Will have her post picture when she is feeling more up to it. Thanks for all the good wishes.

She will grow so fast I would not worry about preemie clothes. Just the onesie (sp), and the pj's Maybe a newborn size for dress up's also check in the toy dept for doll clothes, BUT do check where they are made. I used the Chatty Cathy doll clothes for awhile with my 3rd one, she was so tiny. . The one thing my babies all likes is wrapping them up in a receiving blanket like an Indian baby. It reminds them of being in the womb. Also keep socks on their feet.

I'm glad you are there for them, Sue. A new baby can be perplexing to new parents, and you have plenty of experience. I went to stay a week after my daughter had Alex and the best I could do was cook and clean. I made large batches and frozen them in portions. Of course, you live close so that may not be necessary. It gave me something to do since my daughter nursed, too. And I cleaned her house since in her last month she was so big she could hardly bend. (He weighed over 10 pounds but she gained a ton.)

Alyssa must be doing really well to be able to come home with Amber. That's great!

Yes I agree with sleepless. I have a koi pond with approximately 10 large koi fish. I also have small mosquito fish swimming alongside them. Chances are, a few baby koi will survive, because koi fish do not intend on eating other fish do to their peaceful nature, BUT koi fish will mistake smaller fish as food! When I feed my koi, they oftentimes swallow mosquito fish on accident. If you have a spare tank and a proper filter, you could scoop some pond water into the tank and get it running. To get the babies out safely, I would either patiently try to scoop as many tiny fish I can with a net OR partially drain the pond to the extent where the babies are visible and easy to catch and the parental koi are not stressed about the condition. If you choose to leave the babies in the pond, their only MAIN danger would be being snacked on by their parents, but they will not starve, so feeding is not necessary. Either way, u will loose some babies, but it would be a good experience for everyone. To answer the second question, MOST likely, you will get orange and white colored fish. But if they are sun burnt or are suffering from stress or malnutrition or any other environmental factor, they may slightly change their color tone. Another possibility is that your parental koi fish is carrying a recessive trait (color in your case), and happens to pass it directly to their offspring. In that case, you may get yellow or black koi. I think this will be interesting and I, personally would like to know if they really are koi fish babies or not. as usual, the mention of chemicals brings lots of people out in a ignorance rash. The issue here is one of information which is either deliberately obscure and opaque, or refers users to 'our website' (as if) or is printed in munuscule characters somewhere hidden on the labels (if at all, in fact). As long as we are kept in the dark by chemical manufacturers, we are going to continue to see misuse through lack of information or (worse) an ingrained belief that we, the general public, are being played for fools. Only this week, I have discovered that Clopyralid/amypyralid is now used for the home gardener in herbicides for killing broad leaved plants. Where 2,4,D was used in the past, manufacturers have switched to the cheaper clopyralid despite well known effects concerning the tenacity of its effects and resistance to either heat or long-term composting. It is becoming risky to put ANYTHING either in or on the soil without being absolutely sure of its provenance. We need clear and unbiased information so we can decide for ourselves what risks (if any) we are prepared to take and what price we are willing to pay. Hiding info in a morass of badly conducted research (often conducted by agencies which already have an agenda and are therefore compromised) is of no use to anyone. Rather than arguing for blanket bans, we should be demanding access to clear labelling with all ingredients listed (and not the usual greenwash- bio, natural, eco and so on).

orch, here is the pattern I used for the crocheted preemie blanket, and I used a size F hook.. just worked the colors the way I wanted them.. you can do the same.. and I surely can not remember where I put the hat pattern , but I will find it. I did not put any fringe on the baby blanket..and I just used yarn that I had gotten from Wal-Mart a little while back and this was left over from that project.. you could use any color combination that you wanted.. I think even lite green and yellow would be pretty.. or pink and white. pink and green also.. or just all white and edge with what ever color you wanted. Hearty congratulations. How much does the baby weigh and is she a premie or just full term and small. Enjoy, enjoy. I ditto what others have said. Dress her in a footed onesie and just keep her well swaddled in a receiving blanket. How exciting!

By the way, you can find some premie sizes these days, but the Little Me brand runs small too.

Another thing Sue, when my youngest was born at that weight, full term, the Doc. at that time was very firm as to handling the baby. Only Mom, Dad, and my mom. for a week because she needed to sleep. In your case, add your other daughter. We kept her home for two week, no visiters etc and she gain a full pound in that time frame. Being a winter baby, I would not take her out for six weeks, but at that time, in the 60's, I did that with all my kids. No shopping, no church, etc and even though they did get all the childhood diseases, no colds, no flu etc. But now they take them out in MY opinion way too soon.

They have had health bulletins here for parents of newborns. The information is that some of the immunizations take more than one shot to be effective, so that means for the first several months, parents should be conservative.
