Sorry... just bored and lonely and thought I'd share the latest thing I've been working on. Took me about two hours... two hours of pure happiness... now, I'm done... back to the bored and lonely crap... isn't it really nice when you can actually "immerge" yourself in something you really like to do and forget about all the stupid stuff that is happening around you?? What do all of you do to take your mind off of stuff??

I actually "named" this one... :o)

It's called "Angel Waiting"

Hugs to all of you!

That is a beautiful picture. I usually sew or quilt to take my mind off things.

Melissa, I am happy as long as the plants are thriving as well. Flowers will come and go. Spring was great....until that awful hot wind came and cut my flush short. But that was amazing having it all inside for a week! I never would have done that if I didn't know the wind was coming so thanks Jeri for the warning this spring. Hoovb escaped it, she was just south enough to be spared. After that, I had some nice blooms and then the heat came and cooked everything. I had a few pots get sunburnt and some leaves were so pale they were almost white when they formed. After the heatwave went by the leaves were beautiful and deep green again. Fall came in a trumpet of glory. The best fall flush ever. The Bourbons were loaded and DA roses were in their glory. It seemed to go on and on. I had roses like Jack's Beanstalk with giant blooms on top. Now there is a period of nice warm weather with cool nights. Almost every HT and Fl has something and the fragrance is very good. I haven't seen any rain since a teeny weeny sprinkle a few weeks ago so the plants are all clean with no disease except some mildew on SdlM buds from overcast/ coastal foggy mornings. This year's Halloween show Chrysanthemum crop was so good. I had the big pom-pom showy ones. They hid in part shade during the heatwave and watering them twice a day was worth it when the buds finally arrived. Thanks also to my folks who watered bands and other pots in the June-July heat for me while I was in Gettysburg for the 150th. Just now I am getting mulch and sifting the great soil I got from the neighbor who had some concrete poured. Why do people want to send their best topsoil to the dump? I have enough to make a raised planting and fill in the low spot on my corner where I want to put Perle d'Or (Perle the Great). The bands from Vintage in 1 gal pots now are growing very fast and all need a larger pot or to go in the ground. Actually, everything is still growing fast and I'm trying to keep up. Bulbs are up too early and I have some blloms on the plum tree. But the apple that I nearly lost has grown well and all it's spring grafts survived and are big fat branches full of leaves. The worst was the brutal heatwave of late summer. It killed many of my delicate plants that have been on the edge of growing here. My Japanese maples had all the leaves fry so that there is nothing left to turn colors but I think the trees themselves are fine and will grow nicely next year. The heat didn't bother my Camellias and fall temps have given me a great bunch of buds. Already, the Sasanquas look good and a few early Japonicas have begun to open. Ingrid, I think you would like Camellias because they can hide in the shade and give you pretty flowers through the winter. While they are small, you can move them around and enjoy them wherever you like and move them into the garage or in deep shade during a heat wave. If we get some rain in these upcoming months to wash the soil of irrigation deposits, I will call this year a good year for my roses.

You guys are just so nice! Thank you for all the sweet compliments on the daylilies. I really felt like I learned so much from you all last year - I am grateful to you for educating me and helping me make good choices! Laurel, Double Almond really seems a good one to me. I took that picture very late in the day, and it still looks good! Debra - thank you!! That was one of my favorite pics too. I am trying to keep the garden all in those colors. It made me very happy to think that you think it looks nice. :) Christine, you are so sweet! I just went out and took some garden pics. I'll post them in a few. Judy: I have been rolling right out of bed and going out in my pajamas with the camera. LOL! This bed is in the front yard, so I'm sure my neighbors think I've lost my mind. Kathy, doesn't that Matthew Martin just blow you away! Me too. I wish they had all looked like that. I'm hoping more will when it settles in...? Hi Rita! :D Lion's Pride has to be my favorite too. It was such a surprise, because I only bought it because my Lab, Angus, has "Lion" in his registered name. :p The picture on the Web site was not that great, but the color looked like it would work with the rest of the garden. Then when it bloomed this year - WOW! I couldn't believe it. Oh, and I've already been lurking here this spring/summer, admiring all your wonderful photos again!

Do you have different types of gardens...or everything combined?
Q

I don't think most people looking at my garden would notice the various styles of gardens as they are all sort of cottage style with a mix of plants and a lot of overlap. My garden is currently 'in transition' so not sure exactly how it will end up! LOL Depends on how much I can stick to the plan I *may* make in the new year. January/February is usually when I plan my garden but have almost never been able to follow the plan so who knows! So based on history I have had several different types of gardens based on location. I have an area with mostly conifers in my front garden so had a shade garden which was not very successful as those trees take all the moisture and nutrients and it's a struggle to keep it amended and watered enough. Have now had the trees limbed up so there will be less shade and have amended and mulched heavily. It will still be a dry-ish garden so I need to use appropriate plants there. The only plant that survives well there is Lily of the Valley but it isn't invasive as the soil is dry and poor so it's a good place for it. Another area is near the bird feeder and birdbath and I allowed several different types of perennials to self-seed for years so it was a jungle and I called it my 'wild bird garden'. This area has now had all weeds and self-seeders removed and has many spaces between plants. I hope to *never* again allow it to go wild. I'm using a lot of cardboard and mulch to help with this. There are lilacs, a spirea, perennial sunflowers, delphinium, and some new perennials but there are lots of spaces for other plants and I'll move several from other areas. I also have a couple of "dry-er" gardens that are further away from the house so I infrequently water those and only tough plants survive there. Various poppies, irises, day lilies, potentilla, and perennial sunflowers are there. Nearer the house I have my rose bed with a few other perennials and usually annuals. There are also several very mixed perennial beds with many hardy perennials and a few shrubs. These are the beds that get tended the most and they are too full so many plants will be moved to other areas in the spring. Some plants I will move are columbine, Lady's Mantle, iris, lilies, some groundcovers, lamb's ears, maybe delphinium, blue flax. I also plan to propagate more Walker's Low catmint as can hardly have too many of these. I always add herbs in between the perennials so need to leave/make spaces for them. Everything I grow is extremely frost hardy altho I do push the zone a bit and have some zone 4 plants. Everything else is considered an annual. I'm amazed you use lilacs lavender lass to keep the deer away as the deer here have loved my lilacs. I now have deer-proof fencing so hopefully will see lilac blooms next year and be able to grow many other plants.

For those who start seeds
Q

Hi - In cold-winter climates like yours, you do not want the seeds sprouting in the fall, so delay planting until after you've had your first killing frost. You will not need to store them in cold; letting them dry at room temperature in an airy place where they won't mold will be fine. Small, shriveled seeds are usually lacking in either embryo or endosperm or both and are not viable. However, I usually plant them anyway. It does no harm and some of them may just be small and manage to sprout anyway.

I think it is very pretty. :) I wish I could draw like you can. I can make a good stick person. Haha! Anyway, oddly enough, when I clean I tend to forget any craziness that might be going on. Whatever works, right?

Love you lots

Beautiful picture. I do 'computer art' where I turn a photo into a water color or ink drawing. I also make jewelry and glass beads. Plus lots of gardening. I know what you mean about immersing yourself into something creative to get away from things in your life.

She is beautiful. I couldn't trace it that good LOL. I always wished I could draw and really wanted to paint. At least learn how to do it even if I never got good at it. Don't know why you aren't making money with your talent.

Nicki...That's a really good drawing! I have an idea for you. Are you able to draw a likeness from a photograph? If so, you might be able to make a few $$$ by doing that.

I happen to like drawings of my family. There's a woman in the next town that does that. I haven't checked her prices yet, but I want to see if she'll do one of my granddaughters. We have a local artist that does that in watercolor for big bucks, but I just want a simple drawing.

If you haven't tried it yet, you could practice on your girls' photos...see how people like it...and go from there. Also, family pets are something that people like to have drawings of.

Just a thought because you obviously have artistic talent!
