Softened Water (Salty) for WS??
Comments (7)Karen, there is definitely a bypass valve because I had to flush the system and turn all the valves back on after my father needed a new pump installed last spring. It's not my house...I just plant here! Just having all my "supplies" squirreled away all over the place is driving my father crazy. He's naturally at an age when cleaning things out is the desired goal. The thought of me hauling water jugs upstairs from the basement across the house and into the kitchen is more than I think he can tolerate...LOL. I'm the one who cleans it but there's only so much mess I can make in the house when I'm here doing my "plant thing." I don't think he fully comprehends this WS thing yet because he just keeps saying "I don't want to hear anymore about plants or seeds or bulbs or dirt!" There's a 70 Lb. bag of Pro-Mix out in the garage alongside one wall that he hasn't "noticed" yet since I masked it in some black garbage bags. Strategic timing when he's out is going to be key to making up the milk jugs but once they're out on the patio there's going to be some hoopla about "more junk" all over the place. If I'm lucky they'll get covered by snow before he notices. Don't look forward to the shoveling and ice chopping but some strategic cover would sure help. He's become a "landscape minimalist" by 80 so I'm hoping the much anticipated "blooms of glory" at least make him happy come next year. God bless him, though, for indulging my newfound "gardening bug." I've got many blessings in my life and none of these trifles are much compared to those who don't have the time or opportunity to lift their heads much less see something grow and bloom. Fingers crossed!...See MoreSalty Tasting Water from Softener
Comments (2)1. Isn't the WS supposed to automatically go into bypass mode during regeneration? Yes. 2. Is it possible that the constant brown-outs and power flickers caused an electronic problem with the softener? When I push the Regenerate Now button, it advances on its own but not sure about the timer (although the salty water and lowering of the salt level tells me the timer is working)? Doesn't sound like you have an electrical problem. 3. Is it possible that the resin beads were so coated that when I added the solution it broke it up some and flakes were released and are now clogging something? No. The backwash and fast rinse will clean this. 4. Should I run the solution through again to try to clean any remaining residue? No 5. Do I need to replace the red disc and gasket (they look fine) or is there a valve problem? Unles it looks bad no. 6. Even if it isn't draing in all of the brine, why would it draw it in later so that we could taste it? That is what you need to find out. If it draws brine the entire brining time (about 60 min) the4n you will have salty water. It should only draw for about 20 min but stay in brining cyc le for 60 min. The float assemble must be on the bottom of the tank. Place unit in a regen cycle and see how full the brine tank gets with water. If it puts in too much, that's your problem. Check the drain flow control. If it's cloged, it can cause salty water....See MoreSalty Tasting Water from Softener
Comments (1)One reason the water is salty could be it is drawing too much brine. Check to see if the water level in the salt tank is creeping up over time. While the unit is in service, remove the clip that holds the venturi assemble. There are two ports. If any of them are leaking water, that's your problem. Comments (4)I live near freshwater, but not saltwater. We can see one of the Great Lakes out our front window. We have been told the area where we live used to be a salt flat, but I have not verified that nor do I know if that would add naturally occurring sodium to out well water. Do I just look up any lab where I live to send a sample? The only places I would know to bring it to test water are selling water treatment equipment. To be fair he is not trying to sell me a softener, it is 8 years old and he is not pushing to replace it at all. He even made repairs for free when we installed the new equipment. I suppose it may technically still be under warranty but I don't know if that would transfer to us as we are the second owner. He only sold me an iron filter and a UV light. But I get what you mean in terms of a possible conflict of interest and/or accuracy with the method of his testing....See Morechris8796
