Your most memorable meal?

What was your most memorable meal of the year? It can be at a restaurant, a meal you cooked at home, dinner your husband cooked...anything! What did you love and what really stood out?

Without a doubt - our Harry Potter Feast in August for back to school.

The table was set with the best China, crystal and Scabbers had fallen in the water pitcher and couldn't get out.

We made X-mas crackers as place cards, strung spiderwebs all over the dining room with little pipe cleaner spiders and hung bats from the lights and lots of candles

Appetizers were deviled eggs and puffed brie and egg bites followed by onion soup. We served Turkey, stuffing, roasted vegetables as the main dish. Desserts were jello brains, ghostly meringues and espresso.

Drinks included pumpkin beer and other stuff I can't remember.

The evening was a total blast. I don 't think I can ever repeat that one!

On one of those impossibly beautiful late fall days, my cousin and I went kayaking on the Long Island Sound. Halfway through our 15 mile trek, we paddled over to a deserted beach and had a great lunch of grilled veggie sandwiches on ciabatta bread, fresh chocolate chip cookies, apples and bottled water. It was a perfect meal.

My earliest restaurant memory is of having deviled crab at Gaido's Restaurant in Galveston back around 1956 or so. I make my own version of that dish today, and it is still one of my favorites. My first pizza was in Shreveport, LA, and it had shrimp on it and no cheese. I was 14 at the time and did not eat cheese, and so I loved it. I lived in San Francisco for 12 years, worked in a restaurant there, had friends who worked in restaurants there, but never had a memorable restaurant meal there - I think the restaurants in New Orleans are much better, for my taste. Almost every meal I've had in N.O. (or even in the state of Louisiana) was memorable. I also remember having great food at sidewalk cafes in Houston, like Ari's Grenouille and Maison des Crepes. I really like the Cajun/Creole influences that I found in SE Texas and southern Louisiana, and I am partial to alligator tail, although I love the sushi that I find in L.A. I liked street food in Mexico City, especially the quesadillas de huitlacoche. In Merida, I found a Lebanese/Mayan restaurant that had excellent cochinita pibil that I will never forget, and I've tried to replicate it myself with reasonable success. I had jumbo Gulf shrimp on the beach in Vera Cruz that was very memorable, although I like what I've made recently better. I think I have high expectations for restaurants, and I generally feel that there is something missing or something that could have been done better when I eat out. There are a few restaurants that I appreciate for their atmosphere/ambience, whether the food is excellent or not. Mine was Dec. 24, 1971. My soon-to-be fiance had made reservations at a famous restaurant in Pittsburgh to celebrate Christmas. The LeMont is situated on a bluff overlooking Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle and reservations by the window are hard to obtain. He had planned on surprising me with my engagement ring that evening but was so excited that he couldn't wait until we arrived at the restaurant. While in the car he gave me a present to open. Inside was an old German Christmas ornament that had been in his family. It consisted of three balls that nestled inside each other. When I opened the smallest ball I discovered my ring. He really did surprise me, the first of many. I was so excited that I barely recall the actual meal. But it truly was my most memorable. SheilaJoyce - we share the same special present. My son was born on Tuesday, May 13, 1980. He is my miracle baby as my DH and I had infertility problems and he was conceived one month after I had major surgery so that I could conceive. Never got pregnant again after that! Told him today that his birthday trumps Mother's Day cause I wouldn't be a mom without him!

We deep fried a turkey one year, by 'we' I mean my brother. He researched the fryers in depth, bought one, did not even think of oil and about 10 PM the night before he and my sisters son drove to every convenience store within about 20 square miles - purchasing multiple 16 oz bottles of multiple brands as that was all they had to offer. I'm the family gravy maker and wasn't prepared for no drippings. Nothing else was ready and brother began to panic, said the turkey was turning into a meteor so we went into overdrive trying to get things finished and on the table. It was very nicely browned and slightly underdone in the center. We didn't deep fry another. One of the tastiest turkeys I've had was a gift from a contractor....smoked. It made for a lovely buffet platter and the best sandwiches ever that weekend. I just watched (listened to, I was busy cleaning the master bath) a program Foodnetwork where they spatch cocked a turkey and smoked it on a gas grill with a wood chip box. It seemed reasonably easy and looked delicious, was getting rave reviews. I may try that sometime (not this coming week)....there were drippings, it was cooked on a rack over a disposable roasting pan of simple vegetables that looked tempting too. Not too many Thanksgivings really stand out. Some of the months my dad was ill when I was a child, he was in the Vets hospital a couple of hours from home. We had long time family friends in that city and were going there for the holiday and overnight. Storming terribly, windy and raining torrents/buckets. There was water over the freeway in a few places and the state patrol was advising turning around. We did, with no holiday food at home and nothing open. My mother had made a whipped jello salad, we had little cans of mini oysters she had hoped to add to the dressing, crackers, soft drinks that were never in the house during a normal week and had a makeshift Thanksgiving picnic in our pajamas in front of the fireplace ;)

In early May we were sitting outside on the deck of an Alpine chalet outside Davos belonging to our friend's friend. 2 bottles of wine, one red, one white, several cheeses, several breads, apples and chocolate. I can feel that brisk air, hear the nearby stream, feel the warm sun and see it gleaming on the Alps as Christian tells stories of his ski patrol days. A wonderful lunch. (Those little white specks in the grass are some of the million crocuses we saw!)

The second one was Election day in Rome. We were at a small place, sitting outside near the Vatican. They were having a porcini menu. We shared a dish of porcini and clam spaghetti. The clams were the size of my fingernail, and so sweet. The combination was magical. How do the Italians get so much flavor into the pasta? We had a wonderful conversation about the election with 2 young Swedes at the next table, but I really wanted to just focus on my taste buds.!

This past year it would have to be a dinner at a local place. Six wks ago my 21 yr old GD Stephanie decided to move to NC when she found out she could transfer her position with all her seniority & benefits-- Stephanie has always been extremely close to DH & I and to her Aunts, my 2 girls. So Debbie , Judy & I took her for a farewell dinner , just " us girls"-- we had the best time-- sat at the bar gabbing & drinking wine for probably an hr-- then laughed- reminisced thu appetizers ( a hot spinach artichoke dip with toasted pita chips , roasted vegetables bruschetta ) -- then sampled each other's entrees-- drank more wine-- ended with poached pears & homemade honey ice cream & turtle cheesecake-- spent 3 hrs in that place having a great time. DSIL picked us up & delivered us home-- all of us just a bit tipsy ( & blue that Steph's moving but glad in a way to see her spreading her wings).
