You shouldn't feel bad at all about not wanting to do the allergy testing. It is really only useful if you are going to put your dog on allergy shots. The tests are not reliable for testing for food allergies (by the labs' own admission), so they would likely only tell you which varieties of trees and grasses your dog is allergic to. I do suggest that you consider a thyroid test though. Hypothyroidism can trigger allergies. Trying to solve allergies without treating an underlying thyroid problem will be like beating your head against the wall. The testing can cost ~ $100, but the treatment is easy, cheap and might just cure his itching, ear problems, and low energy. I disagree with joepyeweed about cutting down on baths to avoid soaps. Baths are a great tool to decrease the amount of pollen on your dogs fur. The best shampoo to use would one provided by your vet that is designed to help with allergy symptoms. You just want to make sure to rinse well and get him well dried afterwards....See MoreMy dog is going bald
Comments (5)Comfortis is another flea pill that lasts 1 month. However, most of our clients find it only works 1 month; the second dose a month later doesn't seem to work for a full month and after that, all bets are off. Also some little dogs get an upset stomach with it. But it does seem to work the first time and has made many pets more comfortable quickly. You are definitely going to have to flea bomb the house and treat the yard. I like siphotrol products for the house. You will have fleas hatching out for at least 3 months, so you will need to do monthly bombings for at least that long. Frontline is very safe to give any pet. It does not get absorbed systemically as do ALL other flea products. That is the reason I like it so much. However if it isn't working then you will have to switch to something else like Advantage. Your dog may also have a secondary skin infection which makes the itching many times worse. He may need antibiotics. If there are no contraindications, I would also Rx a short course of steroids to make your dog more comfortable right now. The fur is falling out because he is scratching, he's scratching because he itches, and he itches because he's allergic to fleas and/or he has a skin infection. The steroids take out the itch and will give his skin a chance to heal. Good luck with everything. Be diligent and follow all directions on all products. Again, this will last at least 3 months, so be prepared for an ongoing battle....See MoreWhy does my dog do this?
Comments (20)Thanks for the compliments - I think she is beautiful too, but I am rather partial :-) We went out tonight after I got home from a long night at work, about midnight. I took her out to "do her business" and she wanted to run and play so I took her leash off and let her run around. Of course, she went over between the shed and the fence (where I don't normally let her go). It was dark but I could tell she was rolling around (ewww) so I had to physically pull her outta there. Then she found a spot in the yard she was just insisting on rolling in so I releashed her and brought her in. SHE SMELLS AWFUL NOW! At first I didn't think it was poo of anykind, it smelled more a dead animal. I sprayed her with some "Nature's Miracle" spray and dander remover and brushed her but I swear I can still smell it. My DH is going to just die when we come to bed. I certainly don't have the time or energy for a bath tonight... Tomorrow morning we will embark on a new journey with Lexi - her first bath!! :-) Thanks again for the compliments, she is as soft as she looks in the picture too, by the way. ~P...See MoreTreatment for my dog that has his ear itching?
Comments (11)Look inside the ear & see if there's a bunch of black gunky stuff that looks something like coffee grounds; that would be ear mites. You can "wash" them out with mineral oil, & then add a bit more mineral oil to suffocate any survivors. Put it in a squirt bottle & gently put a little in the ear, massage it externally, down into the base of the ear, & stand back. If the ear is swollen, red, hot, and/or hard, there's an infection, & I think you have to consult a vet....See Moregroomingal
