I just got back from the New York State African Violet Society's show in Albany, NY. Yesterday I attended Bill Price's presentation on trailers. It was fantastic!! After the presentation, I went up to him and asked him about this DVD. He said Yes, there is one in the making, and he hoped it would be done in time for the AVSA national convention in Raleigh, but couldn't promise it. So, now we know for sure it isn't out there, it will be out there, and it will be great when it is out there! He shared not only his wealth of knowledge, but he brought enough crowns or leaves for each of the 50 attendees to select three items. That was a lot of baggie work! And he actually grows over 250 trailers. I don't know if they are all different hybrids; I wish I had asked him. Barbara, still basking in the glow of a successful trip

It appears that anyone who spends (or apparently capable of spending) more than what you think is a reasonable amount is immoral - and that you feel the need to tell others that their are needy people in the world. I'm not sure it has to do with environmental footprint either as you don't really know his environmental/carbon foot print and/or otherwise. But seriously I don't see your concern for environmental footprint as you don't mention it anywhere. You started off as you did before over the fact that someone else spent more than what YOU consider acceptable and called it immoral. "If he'd added a paragraph or so about using ICF construction (do you know what that is?) I'm quite familiar with ICF. ICF works really well for "simpler" houses and is a nightmare with more complex houses. Complex houses might be immoral to you, so that would preclude that issue for you though, right? Besides there are quite a few diverging opinions on using concrete and by extension ICF. While less wood is used, it isn't any more energy efficient than a well built/insulated house. I think the discussion of "green" revolves more around energy efficiency than the actual material being used. It's just that people choose to use insulated concrete forms because its cheaper to attain the same level of energy efficiency than its counterpart - but again with significant drawbacks (especially when it comes to flexibility or automation, which the original poster did do (or attempt to do)). "low VOC finishes" low-voc is definitely human healthier, but it remains to be seen if it has any real relevance to environmentally healthier. The majority of low or no voc paint has enough enviro-unfriendly ingredients that no matter what you do it isn't environmentally better. It's just less voc's being emitted into the household. "or even...energy star appliances" I don't know his appliances or items, but usually anyone who is into automation is going to have fairly high-end appliances which almost certainly are "energy star" appliances. By the way, energy star is a MINIMUM standard. It's such a poor standard that I am not even going to get into it. It's meant to establish a minimum standard so that the average consume shopping for a refrigerator isn't going to be ripped off by an energy inefficient refrigerator. Most anyone who spends big bucks on autmation is going to be buying in the subzero, viking, GE monogram, Liebherr type of level which are all well beyond energy star minimum ratings.. . . And that gets back to the basic question - Why does someone doing beyond YOUR levels dictate them being immoral ? People can spend what they want. If you haven't walked a day in their shoes - why are you calling them immoral for building their house ? Hey, you only need one toilet in a house. How many do you have ? Is it immoral for you to put more than one in your house ? It's all relative depending upon where you are coming from. I just don't get where you think everyone who does a bit more than you, or spends more than you, or is less energy efficient as you is "immoral". "Well, I do get a laugh out of something I read somewhere at some time...maybe The Economist? predicting that these whopping huge houses eventually will all be subdivided when the gated communities become the gated slums. Probably this subconscious thought prompted my comment about the poor and downtrodden." I really doubt it in our lifetimes or the next. Most of these won't last beyond a generation or two. And even then, it gets much more complicated with property lines. You're more likely to see teardowns than you will of change of use. The reason you see "mansions" (true sense of the word) in the past being used for multi-tenant is in high-density areas. You don't see today's megamansions in high-density areas. you might call them high-density, but even if everyone bred like rabbits and doubled the current population - it wouldn't change suburban america. Perhaps if you increased the population 10 fold, but we're talking many more generations beyond now.

Hi Stephanie, Oops, this turned into a novel, sorry. I think I forgot that I was not talking on the phone to one of my friends! I hope you like to read :-). Well, I had typed quite a bit back in response when I suddenly lost the forum, boooo! I'm a slow typer so I hate when that happens. I will start again! It is so funny to read your post, we have very similar hobbies! I also used to babysit, but no longer. I now volunteer at a school and the public library, between 4 and 30 hours a week depending on the time of year. I also enjoy gardening (except weeding :-)!) and I have always loved to cook, especially to bake! I do not bake much anymore, when I do I try to use less white flour and butter, and more whole grains and fruit. I also apply this to my cooking. Most recipes taste the same with much less fat, even in baked goods you can generally leave out half of the fat without effecting the recipe. Sometimes you need to add fruit puree to replace some of the fat, most of the time that is not needed. For cooking, I serve more vegetables and smaller portions of meat. For individual meals I usually serve about 4 ounces of meat. Then they can eat what they want of the sides. Vegetables, brown rice, mashed pot. with buttermilk and butter buds, baked potatoes with low fat sour cream, stuffing made with whole wheat bread... you get the idea. I also put out fresh fruit that is ready to eat, washed berries or grapes, and other fruit that is cut up. No, we don't eat as healthy as we should every night, but every little bit counts. Last night was tacos made with 96% lean ground beef, beans, lettuce, black olives, tomatoes (from the garden :-) ), low fat cheese, and low fat sour cream, with salsa and a bit of salsa queso on the side. Not a typical diet dinner, but much better for you than taco bell! I always use 93% lean or better ground beef, I do not deep fry, and I rarely pan fry. Does this sound preachy? I don't mean it too, I am not an over the top health nut, just trying to keep my family healthy and happy at the same time. My husband says he would be happier if I would make breaded pork tenderloin with fried breaded zucchini twice a month! He would also be 10 lbs heavier! I try to exercise some each day. Not always a video, sometimes a walk or walk/run outside, sometimes a bike ride, sometimes my Gazelle (it's fun and I can watch a TV show I want to see at the same time), sometimes I spend about ten minutes running up and down my stairs. I usually try to do some toning when I exercise, I alternate upper and lower body. I also have other videos when I want something completely different. I also like Kathy Smiths Step Workout, Time-saver Lift Weights to Lose Weight, and New Yoga video (I only do the standing portion - it is so relaxing! but I cannot do the floor portion - it's killer!). I also enjoy the Extreme Makeover Fitness video. I try to exercise for thirty minutes about five days a week, sometimes I don't manage that, sometimes I do more! But I find that as long as I do something and don't sit on the couch eating chips (like when I'm PMSing - this week, EEK!) that I like what I see in the mirror. If I slack off too much (don't do anything for days or weeks on end, it happens) then my bottoms start to get a little tight and when I look in the mirror I look like a slob. My husband says I look the same all the time! That is probably true, I dare say it is just guilt when I know I have been really bad that makes my think I don't look good. It could be the weekly Saturday trip to Dairy Queen, but you have to live! And I love ice cream! Oh yes, very important, I make sure I eat a good breakfast every day. Sometimes just a quick bowl of cereal, sometimes oatmeal with fruit, or whole grain toast with fruit. But something with fiber so it sticks with me for a while. Make sure you get your fiber. I was reading a study that said that most adults get less than half the fiber they need. It said if you started eating the recommended amount of fiber, you could lose 10 lbs in one year without changing anything else. Eating that much fiber would be a challenge, I try to eat more than I use to. Hmm, this got really long! I'm going to stop and go have some breakfast now that my son is up! I also read, crochet, sew, do machine embroidery, quilt, paint, do puzzles, and help my husband and son with their hobby - collecting sports cards and memorabilia. Believe it or not, playing with sport cards is fun! Oh yes, I always sit on my yoga ball when I sort cards, I figure it should be good for my abs!

gibby3000 - I lost weight because I was basically scared into it. I do run 3 times a week and go to the gym 2 times a week but I was doing that while I was carrying the extra weight. My DH and I were renewing our life insurance in Jan of 2009 and because of our ages at the time (56) we had to have a little check-up by the public health nurse. She dropped by the house and was doing our weight, blood pressure, blood tests and heart monitor. I knew I was carrying extra weight but I didn't know how much. Anyway, she weighed me (I didn't look at the number) and then took my blood pressure and she noted that it was quite high. I didn't know why. I thought to myself - I exercise, and I think I eat properly. But whatever. She took again at the end and it was still high and she commented that it shouldn't be that high. So then I looked at my weight and just about fell out of my chair. I was shocked at what I weighed which was about as much as a man. So I got on the internet and just started researching healthy eating, checked my BMI, looked at calorie counting, looked at what fat is and how many calories are in a pound, etc. What I realized is that I can't and wasn't prepared to exercise anymore so I had to look at my food intake. I don't eat chips, cheezies or any type of junk food (dark chocolate is definitely an issue and continues to be so) but what I was doing was just eating too much food during the day. I was exercising and so used that as an excuse to eat but that attitude does catch up with you eventually. I found out through research that 1 pound has 3500 calories in it and so if I want to lose a pound a week I have to drop 500 calories a day. So, no more mid-morning snack, no more eating dinner leftovers for lunch and no more cheese and crackers in the afternoon. I started eating a sensible, prepared for me by me lunch. Some fruit, some protein and a carbohydrate. I do get hungry mid-afternoon and so I have applesauce with cinnamon. I do prepare sensible dinners but now I don't have seconds. And nothing after dinner and that was the hardest thing to let go of. It took 9 months to lose 42 pounds and I feel so much better and that is what keeps me motivated to keep it off. My running is better, my walking is easier, bending to get things is easier - I just feel so much better and that is the incentive to keep it off. The changes that I made were ones that I knew I could maintain over the long haul. I didn't give up the cream for my coffee because I knew I couldn't give it up for the long term. \\ I think that it's important to only make those changes that you can maintain for the rest of your life and not miss. If you can't give up that cookie at night - cut back someplace else but still count it in your calories, if you can't cut back sugar in your coffee for ever then cut back where you can and not miss it. Eating healthy and maintaining a healthy weight shouldn't be or feel like punishment for life. A couple of people have commented about how they blew it one week or were "bad" over the weekend. During this process I gave myself permission for the occasional lapse. I knew it was going to happen because I'm not perfect, I'm not a robot and I'm trying to break a 25 year eating habit. You don't do that without a misstep along the way. Now, I have given myself a 5 pound leeway for those times when I'm away or we have a busy couple of weeks of entertaining. I do weigh myself everyday and do start to regroup if I put on 3 pounds. I don;t beat myself up if that happens because now I have the tools to deal with it. This is just my opinion but I don't believe in these fad diets because they are too hard to maintain as a long-term lifestyle. (I'm not talking about diets relating to gluten allergies or diabetes, etc) Like I said - my opinion.
