My best description is a strong plastic-y smell and taste. (I haven't swallowed any, just tasted melted "cubes") It was connected using a braided water line supply kit, hooked to my sink water line. The water is not filtered. I called U-Line and spoke with a person who suggested putting vinegar in the ice tray and then trying the Ice Machine Cleaning packet if the vinegar doesn't work. I tried the vinegar and now the ice is really gross. I will have to wait for the cleaner to arrive. Until then, has anyone else had a similar problem? What was the cause? And the solution? Even though my sink water tastes ok, would filtering the water help? Thank goodness my fridge icemaker still works. It's a typical blisteringly hot summer here. Thanks for reading and responding!

Possibly the water inlet valve is seeping, slowly overflowing the mold, water dripping out of it freezes into a block. Can also be heavy mineral accumulation on the mold from hard water causing a type of capillary action to pull drips of water out to the same effect.

As you are aware, some ice damming occurs naturally with the change in outside temperature and sun exposure, and sometimes the weather pattern creates lots of ice no matter the house's precautions taken. Basic IRC code calls for the ice barrier (e.g. Grace Ice & Water Shield etc) to be 36" wide on steep roofs 8:12+. For roofs with slope <8:12, it needs to be 24" minimum inside the exterior wall perimeter. So if you have an overhang longer than 12", you need another course of ice barrier. This will help with where the natural phenomenom of ice damming occurs backing up water under the shingles near the eaves. However, I suspect with excessive leaking above the ice barrier you have an attic problem and man-made phenonenom. Meaning, your ceiling plane is leaking so much heated air into the attic, that the entire higher roof is ice damming, not just at the lower expected locations where the roof is closer to the ceiling and wall. Maybe venting is not sufficient either. So I would be looking at air sealing and insulation of the ceiling plane and attic ventilation. With a hundred year old house, you should be able to see between the gaps of the roof sheathing 1x boards (unless they oversheathed existing with plywood). Look at it and poke it and you can tell if its just felt, synthetic underlay, or the required sticky waterproof membrane. Also check your gutters, backed-up gutters can exacerbate ice damming.
