At today's prices and the fast pace of developments in digital camera, your money may be better spent on a replacement camera. (I do not know how much you will spend for your replacement lens and that is a maor factor.) Again, I do not know if you will be taking the lens apart to replace some glass, or will it be a complete assembly that will be swapped out. In genreal, if a lens is taken apart, it requires an aligment bench to put it back together. Optics often have 'tilt' rings in the barrels to get the best alignment of the lens. The lens cane be tilted a very small amount by rotating the tilt rings. The next critical item is lens spacing, e.g., the position of each glass element relative to its neighbor for best focus. Lens protection: In either case, a replacement lens or new one can be protected by placing a UV filter over the lens. UV filters were common for film cameras since the films were sensitive to light beyond the blue range seen by the human eye and could fog a photo. It was common practice to leave a UV filter on the lens for protection from dust and scratches. If the filter got damaged, merely replace it. A UV filter will reduce the amount of light entering the lens, but not by much. Most filter suppliers provide the reduction in terms of f-stops. If the reduction is less than 1/2 f-stop, it will not have much effect on exposure speed. If your camera has automatic light metering through the lens, you will not have to make any manual adjustments; And most digital cameras do light metering through the lens.

iowagirl, I really don't know much about the DSLR cameras, so I guess I better do lots more research. I just mentioned to my sister than I was going to buy a new camera and I wanted another Canon. She has an Olympus and said she thought it took great pictures until she saw her 2 friends pictures. They were awesome, so she ask them what type of camera they had and both just said Canon 12 mp. I'll get her to ask them more about which camera it is. I'll also check out the others that you all have suggested. I just want to hurry up and get one! I hate to be without a camera. Seeing as you know the answers to all the questions helpers here might ask.. like what system you're running [Win XP or later models]...how the printer is attached to your system...whether the drivers are up-to-date...I think you'd be well advised to have a look at the manual, chipster. It might just be the quickest way to get an answer to your questions.
