Five years of butterfly garden growing by trial and error and I finally got a view of some *brown winged monarch fluttering by, no stop overs for feeding yet but at least they where seen in numbers from 3 - 8 weekly for the first time in the neighborhood in five years. Perhaps it's them pesky English sparrows one of my neighbors is long time fond of feeding that hurts there longer closer visits as they ruckus about in my yard as well ( there great bug killers of pest and such and they do bring about some bigger and more aggresive birds as well )I have made a compromise by education to the awfull bird feeding habits that they seem to possess. * brown winged = I can't ID em for certain as Monarchs as the bird feeding thing gets resolved I am hopefull for neaxt season for landings and pics. I also fond your site nice enough to join I have much to learn and will still read along in this forum thanks for the invite.

silvekelt, thought I'd post about my ox-eye daisies. They were really small divisions planted last year to be little in-betweeners, and they did take over. I actually lost some plants that they overran, and I'm wondering if they are waterhogs because those that did make it near them were doing pretty poorly. My patches were HUGE! I ended up having to remove all of my ox-eyes from the garden. I still love them, but I'm hoping when we move I'll be able to do a meadow-type garden with them using other meadow plants that are equally as enthusiastic in their growth. Let them duke it out for space while I enjoy the wonderful flowers. One nice thing about the ox-eyes this year is they had a really long flowering period in my garden. I don't know if that's normal or something about this year as I don't have enough gardening experience, but they were certainly ready for some encores as the days went on. I'll be interested to hear your experience with them in your garden and how it compares to mine.

Those are beautiful.
Is that one of the new sunrise or sunset Echinacea in the first picture?

Minrose,

Those are beautiful photographs, and it is very commendable that you raised those butterflies. You must have a good camera and know how to use it.

Sorry I don't remember the name of the flower but I did buy it new this summer, I bet it is what you think it was though.
Thank you for all the nice comments. I have done alot of research on raising butterflies and come to the conclusion that they are better off if I collect them and raise them in jars, there are so many parasites that can attack the catepillars. In fact out of the 12 that evolved into beautiful butterflies, I also had 12 die because of parasite inside them. I did not find them in time in the wild.
Konrad, I love your butterfly shots, please share more.
