Show Me Non-Chandelier Options for Dining Room?

I am in the process of replacing most of our light fixtures, and I'd like to expand my idea pool for my dining room. If you have something other than a chandy in your dining room, I'd love to see it. (Nothing against chandeliers; I've already picked out some I like if I can't find an alternative, I just want to make sure I consider all my options. :)

I don't know your style but a mobile over a dining table can work.

Something flat used as ceiling art over a table:

Capiz shells are always dramatic. There are capiz shell chandeliers but you could just use capiz shells alone over the table too.

Get some xmas ornaments that don't scream 'holiday' and hang them tight together. Mercury glass balls are very pretty.

Thanks, Dilly. I do need a fixture with lights, as there is no other source of light in the room and it's where we eat every meal as well as do homework, etc.

My own style is pretty traditional and I'm trying to go with fixtures that look like they belong with this 1969 house. Looking online, I see large pendants, bowl lights, island lights, etc., that seem like they might work just as well at providing light as a chandy, so I wanted to see if anyone had photos of those styles in use in a dining room...

Mine is totally gold :) This was before the remodel started, and shows the wall color as it should be with paint and glaze. THis shows it in mid construction (I had the floors darkened to walnut, added crown molding, and am adding a chandelier with amber glass to compliment a venetian glass collection) The walls here are missing their buff glaze: Close up of the walls:

Your stainless hood definitely fits your gorgeous kitchen much better! Thanks for posting. So far, the only non-stainless hoods I've seen have been bulkier than I think I'll like, certainly bulkier than all the stainless hoods out there. Stainless is *the* thing these days so it's really hard to find inspiration rooms with any other appliance color, especially in the magazines. But they've got to be out there somewhere (is that hoping for too much?). Anyone else?

I'm going to disagree with advice to paint first and hold off on reupholstering the chairs. You say you've been waiting three years to do this. Selecting fabric can take a lot of time--esp. when working with an open floorplan where you want the colors/fabrics to flow from room to room. You have some lovely fabrics to choose from that can be incorporated into your space in a variety of ways--or even into the adjacent rooms. I recovered my DR chairs last year and am so glad that I did. Mine also were hard and uncomfortable--which you said yours are as well. One thing that was important to me was the fabric not only coordinate with my DR, but my LR since I planned to occasionally move the DR chairs into the LR if I needed extra seating for a party. Personally I found a stripe to be the most versatile choice. I do also agree that you are more likely to tire of a floral or find it more limiting as time goes on. To me, your ivory will always read more formal due to the sheen of the present fabric--not so much the color. If you still like the floral, I would again consider using two complimentary fabrics and use the floral in smaller doses. For instance, you could do the host chairs in floral and others in stripe or solid, or do different backs/fronts as I suggested earlier. Or bring in your floral fabric in a less permanent way via a table or buffet runner. Calico Corners is also really good with suggesting complimentary fabrics. It may be worthwhile to bring in a swatch of the valance fabric and ask for advice on complementary fabrics.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood. So you are looking for lighting?

Pendant lighting can look fabulous and would go with a '60s home.

True vintage if you are a purist:

Maybe a drum shade fixture over the table? They are becoming more popular and the price is coming down since they are mass produced now. They would still say "'60s".

Polly, I do like some of those lanterns, I will poke around on my online sites to see some.

Dilly, yes, lights required. I like the drum shades and that's where I started looking when I first began hunting for fixtures. I also like that vintage fixture in your photo, if I could find one the right scale for the room/table--I'm not a purist because I don't have the budget to be one, but I do like vintage and I'm not against having old lights rewired. I'll check eBay for ideas...

Natal, do you have a photo? I'd like to see.

It is quite literally the plainest Jane of a dining room in the world, so anything I can do to make me love the room a little will be worth it!

I don't know what your dining room looks like so I could be way off base...but I love these kind of lights...of course they don't work if you don't have a high ceiling.
