dog & ear mites ... ivermectin

My dog is very skittish, it's a battle to do anything with him, even put on a collar. So I gave him a small dose of ivermectin for ear mites & then today (the next morning) he is scratching like crazy ... to the point of blood. Could this mean the mites are dying & causing his ear to itch like crazy?? I was able to get some mineral oil in there in hope that it would give him some relief & even swirl around a cotton ball, hoping that would help.

How did you give the ivermectin..........topical or oral? Ear mites dying wouldn't cause more itching.
I suggest a visit to the vet to make sure there isn't also an ear infection going on.

If ivermectin is put directly into the ear, it first needs to be diluted at a rate of 1 drop ivermectin to 99 drops mineral oil. If you put ivermectin into your dog's ear full strength, I would have to assume that it was EXTREMELY irritating - perhaps even damaging. You should call your vet immediately and ask how to proceed.

This is what I did, went back there and they wrote it out for me so that is all good. I only could not remember cuz I was upset. I will use the acidophilus if everybody says that is a good thing. Please reply!! I did not react Moonie57. What it was a girl that went to my school works there and she was teh one that took me and my dog back and took his temperature and checked his ears. She said why was his ears hurting on Friday and I was coming in on Monday. She said I probably did not know how to give the medicine right the first time and I just let them get bad instead of using the medicine the right way. I was happy when I saw her working there cuz its nice to recognize somebody when you go to a strange place but I forgot how crappy she is. And then when the Vet came in she asked him if my dogs nails were cut to short and I told him that I don't cut them we just walk all the time on the sidewalk and he said that was the right thing to do and the smartest way. Well you know when somebody is being crappy to you and she was!! Moonie I have handle on my dogs ear now. It is just one ear that is infected and I probably will not go back there again cuz I don't want that girl to be crappy to me again. I like the Vet tho and how can it be that he gave me the same thing I was using before that people gave me to use accept a different kind of powder and the other stuff is in a different color bottle? I hope that its right and my dogs ear gets better.

The doses to prevent heartworms, treat mange, and to deworm are all very different. Most adult dogs do not get ear mites; in fact I see very few dogs or puppies with ear mites at all. I am not familiar with ProMectin B. Sorry.

jeanie_beth thank you for the great info on ivermectin. One thing though just for anyone referring to the info and the dosage. If a dose for an adult cat is 200micrograms......then, to draw that amount up, from a Ivermectin injectible solution bottle, 1% solution, for cattle/swine..........you have to have a 1cc syringe. they are the syringes that are very thin, about as half as thin as a pencil would be. On a one cc syringe......which is also a one ml syringe....they usually have both ml and cc written on the syringe........ On the syringe you will see ten larger increments with numbers written next to them: .1, .2, .3.....all the way to .10. between each of the large increments, you see the ten tiny increments between each. Since a 1% ivermectin injectible bottle has 10mg per milliliter(mL).....and the adult cat dose is only 200micro-grams.........(there are 1000 micrograms in one mg).........you will only be drawing up to the second tiny increment mark on the syringe......as seen in photo below: So, assuming you have Ivermectin Injection 1% for cattle and swine, in order for you to draw up the correct dose for an adult cat, which according to Jeanie's vet is 200 microgram,..... you will draw up .02mL on this ONE mL syringe shown in the photo. so, literally it will contain a couple of drops. Ivermectin can be very toxic and can kill a cat or dog if overdosed. and since the dose for cats and dogs is so tiny, you have to be very careful and not confuse measurement,....otherwise you can easily give them 100X the safe dose!!!!.....ALWAYS make sure you are starting with the 1% ivermectin injectible.......that will say for cattle and swine...................(NOT the one that says sheep drench, or horse paste, etc)...................... first take alcohol swab/pad and wipe off the top stopper first. Then ALWAYS draw it up with sterile new 19 gauge needle (its very thick liquid, and is basically impossible to draw it up with a 23 or 25 gauge needle) , using ONLY a 1 mL syringe (which is a one ml syringe)sterile syringe as well. Then draw up to exactly the second tiny line marked on the syringe(from the point closest to the needle hub). THAT tiny amount is 200 micrograms. .........if you want to draw up only 100 micrograms, you would only go to the first tiny increment, and if you want to draw up 300 micrograms, then you would go to the third tiny increment (from the needle hub)., etc.

Look inside the ear & see if there's a bunch of black gunky stuff that looks something like coffee grounds; that would be ear mites. You can "wash" them out with mineral oil, & then add a bit more mineral oil to suffocate any survivors. Put it in a squirt bottle & gently put a little in the ear, massage it externally, down into the base of the ear, & stand back. If the ear is swollen, red, hot, and/or hard, there's an infection, & I think you have to consult a vet.

My daughter used olive oil in the ear for our cat's ear mites. We read that the chemicals are too harsh so we opted for a more natural approach.

It worked very well. She keeps her eye on the cat's ears and so far so good...about two weeks now.

Mites have to breathe;
all you have to do is smother them.

I use to treat ear mites with Vaseline in rabbits. Today I might mix a bit of 7 dust with the Vaseline and try that, as I just got into chickens and some came with mites and they told me to treat with 7 dust and after 3 applications they were gone never to return.

A veterinarian at Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston long ago prescribed this treatment for ear mites in cats : one dropperful of mineral oil in each ear. Don't clean out the ears with a q-tip until 10 days later, if at all. The oil kills the mites, drowns them actually. I've used this treatment over the years with complete success. No need for medication, just simple mineral oil, available at any pharmacy.

Your dog or cat won't like it and will be a greasy mess, but it will work without any skin irritation or other side effects. If you have several animals, treat them all at the same time so that you eradicate the mites from the household.

ORGANIC apple cider vinegar (with the mother) is the answer. We had a huge problem with ear mites in our two labs and 6 barn cats. I started putting 1 Tbs. of ACV in their water every day. It took about 6 weeks to see a difference but we have done this for two years now and not a ear mite EVER.

BTW, I was told it also takes care of worms. It doesn't. Maybe if you increased the amount, it would but then the cats won't drink the water.

The ACV with the mother is wonderful. It keeps the insects off the dogs and it does also kill intestinal worms but not completely.
I add the ACV with the mother to the chicken water and that helps keep the chickens free from worms since they free range.
I even take the stuff since I garden daily. The bugs do not pester me as much.
I hate taking the stuff. I hold my nose and drink it down with water.
In Canada they feed the ACV to the horses to keep the insects off. It does work but you must stay on it and it has to have " the mother" .
The mother is a cloudy suspension that is what makes the product effective.
I find my asthma to be more controllable when I am taking the stuff but I hate it. I feel wonderful taking it but I
hate this stuff more than dusting or washing windows.
