Holiday NonAlcoholic & Alcoholic Drinks

I'm looking for some new drinks to serve at upcoming holiday parties! I don't want to serve hot chocolate, I'm hoping to find something a little different...... anyone have a good recipe to share? TIA

I have made this spiced cider every Christmas for the last 29 years. My son insists on it. It is delicious hot or cold. Just the right combination of sweet and tangy. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

HOT SPICED CIDER

2 quarts apple cider (not juice)
1 and 1/2 quarts cranberry juice
3 cinnamon sticks
1 and 1/2 tsp. whole cloves
1/4 cup brown sugar

Bring all ingredients to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove cloves and cinnamon sticks. Serve hot or cold. Makes approximately 12 servings.

I love hot buttered rum. This is a basic recipe from Emeril:

Ingredients

* 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
* 2 cups light brown sugar
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
* Pinch ground cloves
* Pinch salt
* Bottle dark rum
* Boiling water

Directions

In a bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Refrigerate until almost firm. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the butter mixture into 12 small mugs. Pour about 3 ounces of rum into each mug (filling about halfway). Top with boiling water (to fill the remaining half), stir well, and serve immediately.

Mulled wine is also a good warming drink. This recipe looks right from About.com. I'd use whole allspice rather than ginger.

Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:

* One bottle (750 mL) of red wine (suggestions: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot)
* One peeled and sliced orange (keep peel to add zest to taste into cooking pot)
* 1/4 cup of brandy
* 8-10 cloves
* 2/3 cup honey or sugar
* 3 cinnamon sticks
* 1 tsp fresh or 2 tsp ground ginger (allspice can be substituted)
* Serves 4-6

Preparation:

To make the perfect cup of mulled wine, combine all ingredients in either a large pot or a slow cooker. Gently warm the ingredients on low to medium heat (avoid boiling), for 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure that the honey or sugar has completely dissolved. When the wine is steaming and the ingredients have been well blended it is ready to serve. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs (leave seasonings behind) and enjoy!

Since they can't have alcohol, it might make the game more fun if a big bury guy DID have to take a shot of a frilly drink. The other fellas teasing him for having to take a Shirley Temple shot becomes part of the game. How about the drink mixes they sell in the liquor stores for making margaritas, daiquiris,& pina coladas?

LEETE'S ISLAND GARDEN CLUB PUNCH (1 gallon) 2 cups strong tea 4 cups water, divided 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 cinnamon stick 12 whole cloves 2 cups cranberry juice 6 oz can frozen orange juice concentrate 6 oz can frozen grapefruit juice concentrate 6 oz can frozen lime juice concentrate 6 oz can frozen lemonade concentrate 1/2 can ( 6 oz size) frozen pineapple juice concentrate or to taste 1 qt ginger ale, optional Mint leaves, optional Vodka or rum, optional Pour the freshly brewed tea into a large bowl or stainless steel pot. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of the water w/the sugar, cinnamon stick & cloves & simmer, covered for at least 20 minutes. Strain, cool & add to the tea. Pour in the cranberry juice, orange juice concentrate, grapefruit juice concentrate, lime juice concentrate, lemonade concentrate, pineapple juice concentrate & remaining 3 cups water, stirring until the frozen juices have melted. When you're ready to serve the punch, pour it over ice in a large punch bowl & add the ginger ale, if using. Float some mint leaves on top (if using,) or make a frozen ice mold. Glad you found it. I saw some similar recipes that said to serve it cold or put an ice mold in or something and was wondering if it could just be served warm. Sounds extremely sweet but does sound interesting. I used to drink some of the Jell-O "juice" when making Jell-O and it was tasty so I'm sure this would be great on a cold night. Should be easy to modify for different flavors too. I used a small 3-ring binder for recipes for a long time too. Worked well. Some pages were handwritten, some typed, some were clippings taped onto a blank sheet and it had hand made section dividers. Still works well and being the smaller size it used 1/2 sheets of paper and was not clumsy at all. I need to transfer the best recipes into the computer someday. Then back it up. It'll happen.... someday.... maybe.

I got an update from the ex partner "C". He told me that "T" spent a couple nights living on the street, now is in a detox program at Kaiser. I don't know how he got into Kaiser. C has gotten T a place at the micro apartment halfway house place, for after he gets out of Kaiser. It is in downtown Portland, units are just 200 sq ft but they are private, there is some sort of supervision and support - I'm not sure about the details. I don't know if T still has his job, but I'd guess not. I'm not sure who is paying for the micro apartment or how long T can stay there. Poor C says he is done with T now; but I'd guess he has said that before in the past decade. Loyalty, and concern for their son, keeps him trying to help. Over the weekend, when C wasn't answering T's calls, T went to C's house and tried to get/break in, until the neighbors called the police. That really upset C. T used to live a pretty high life. They had a house in France and a big house in Portland. T always wore super fashionable clothes, had expensive tastes. Until recently he lived in a beautiful urban hip loft in downtown Portland. He's fallen a long way. I hope this was/is his rock bottom, but I'm not sure. And to add to the good start to 2015, one of my dear older friends, a remarkable gentleman of 84 y/o, has pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed very late, just before Christmas. He and his wife delayed notifying friends until after the New Year, to avoid spoiling people's holidays. He's had chemo but it is useless, the cancer had already metastasized to his liver. SWMBO and I went to see them Monday night. He has deteriorated very quickly and is already bedridden, extremely thin, only eating cups of boullion, not receiving visitors. We sat with his wife and SWMBO is going over there during the days to be available for emergencies while the wife goes out for an hour or two to take care of stuff. In Oregon we have the "Death With Dignity" law which allows a terminally ill patient, after a 15 day waiting period, to get a lethal pill to be self administered at a time of his choosing. They have started that process. I am skeptical he will survive 15 more days. He has lived a long and excellent life, so his passing is not such a surprise or tragedy. His wife is 18 years younger, a lovely woman in good health (I think I've posted a dinner party picture with her, in the past) and he leaves her and his four children comfortably situated. He has done everything on this earth that a man should do, and I hope he can die without too much pain.

I think the Canada Dry marketing must be working on me, because I think of cold cocktails with gingerale (we also drink in a warm room with a fire). I'm fond of gingerale with vodka or rum and cranberry sorbet. Real egg nog is always wonderful, too.

This punch is good and makes enough for a crowd. As does the sangria recipe below it. The punch is clear and sparkling so the ice brittle adds color. You can use anything you like in the ice brittle, for the holidays mint leaves and pomegranate berries would be fun.

Glacier Punch
Source BH&G Holiday Appetizers 1999

2 c citrus vodka (may sub raspberry or cherry flavored)
2/3 c orange liqueur
2 T kirsch
1/2 c peach schnapps-(my addition)
4 c ice cubes
1 750-ml bottle champagne, chilled
2 c carbonated water, chilled

Sugar (optional)
Ice Brittle

Combine vodka, orange liqueur, kirsch, schnapps and ice cubes in punch bowl. Carefully add champagne and carbonated water. If desired, sweeten with a little sugar. Top with chunks of Ice Brittle.

Ice Brittle: Pour 1 c water into a 15 x 10 x 1 inch pan. Sprinkle surface evenly with edible flowers such as marigold, calendula, viola, pansy or dianthus. Sprinkle surface evenly with 1 c fresh raspberries or other fresh fruit. Freeze 3 hours or overnight. Unmold and break into chunks. ~~I used mint leaves in place of flowers~~
Red Apple Sangria 3 oz Full bodied dry red wine (Shiraz, Cabernet, ZinfandelÃ¢ÂÂ¦.) 1 oz Sweet\-n\-sour mix 1 oz Apple Liquor (I use 99 Apples brand, but if you an find Shakka, I think it's even better)) 1 oz Pineapple Juice 1 oz Cranberry Juice Garnish with Chopped apples, orange slices and fresh cranberries. Yes, any of the hot drinks above. I like to use the crock pot as my "punch bowl" for these winter party drinks - always adding cinnamon sticks. It makes your house smell heavenly and festive too.

I like punches for parties because people can serve (and refill) themselves and you don't have to worry about the alcohol and fixings for every person's preferred drink. Everyone loves punch. And you can mix refills in advance and keep them in the fridge until needed. Bring back the punch bowl!

How about ginger martinis? My DH found this recipe on Food Network a few years ago and has become a master at them. After you've made the ginger syrup, don't throw out the pulpy gingery lemon paste. It makes a great addition to cakes and cookies. I freeze it in ice cube trays and use it all winter long.

My version of hot cider is really dummbed down... in a saucepan I hear up apple juice with whole cloves and broken cinnamon sticks.

I think I may take a copy of the hot buttered rum drink home for tonight :-)
