You aren't kidding....beautiful picture. I love how the clouds and the trees seem to be shaped alike and that blue sky and sun rays make me wish I would have been there in person.

Information on bulbs...
Q

In all the info on bulbs that I find, I have two questions that remain still unanswered. In very northern Alberta it seems you have a gift if you can grow anything. I seem to have no gift. Here's my first question, when planting in the fall, do you need to water the bulbs immediately after planting? Second question - I live in zone 1. Can a zone 3 bulb grow here? What are the conditions for this to happen?

The overhead shade will help, but with the temperatures that were having right now, it's tough, especially for container plants. As far as light, there is probably plenty for them to survive. You will need to watch the water though, it can be tricky. You will see your plants wilt down in the afternoon and want to water them. Be careful. Plants will wilt because they can't take up enough water to keep up with transpiration from the leaves. If they haven't bounced back by late evening or morning they may need more water. If you over-water at these temperatures and the soil stays too moist you're inviting fungi and root rot. The lavender, rosemary and sage should do okay with less watering. Likewise the peppers. Tomatoes and cukes are a little more difficult. A moisture meter helps take the guess work out and they're not expensive. There are a few that have a light meter built-in. The plants that are lacking light will start to grow toward the light and start looking "leggy" rather that full. Rotate your pots every week or two to help keep the growth balanced. One way to help keep the soil temps down is to water with ice cubes anduse mulch in your pots to slow evaporation from the soil.Hope this is of some help.

Should wood planks go direction of Sunrays or Length of Room?
Q
Comments (10)
The sun plays a big part in how our flooring looks. When you walk into our house, there is a huge hallway, approx. 9'W x 20" long that leads into the great room. The far wall in the great room is covered with windows, so when you walk in, you see the wall of windows ahead of you. The model of our house had the floor boards going the length of the hallway. We thought it looked like a bowling alley, so we asked that the floor be installed diagonally (with the strong approval of the builder's designer). At night the floor looks gorgeous...the diagonal takes away that long, bowling alley look. However, the daytime is a different story. The light from the wall of windows shines into the house and if you look at the floor, it looks choppy because you see where all the boards end and you also see every defect. Our floor is natural maple, so the edges where the boards meet are very noticeable. You no longer see the long line which I now believe would look better, at least in the daytime. So, sunlight does play a part because it does show every defect. I know tigerwood has a lot of variation so maybe it wouldn't make as much of a difference as it does in our house. So, the point of this entire ramble is to say that where the sunlight hits can be a factor.

Sun fade on wood

I think there are some UV window "films" or something that can be put on the glass? The 3M site below says their window fimls block out 99% of UV rays that fade fabrics and furnture. If you do a google search for windows + UV protection, you should be able to get more information. Hope this helps. Pam Here is a link that might be useful: UV Window Films - 3M

I like those kind of scenes too. Somehow they seem kind of inspirational almost.

I've got one kind of like that from the Alb Balloon festival with the sun up coming through a cloud bank that is kind of neat. I'll try to dig it up and post it too.

Ha. Really KT? Wouldn't that be quite a coincidence. FWIW, that was taken the first Saturday of the Festival. Where you there that day?

As coincidences go, I found out this week a long time internet friend from a basketball board was there that day too. Of course, since we've never seen each other in person, we could have walked right by each other for all we know.

Actually, I was there last year(2005). I wasn't sure when your photo was taken, when you first posted it. I was in Albuquerque this past August though.

I heard that the ascent was delayed for a while that Saturday when you were there, due to those clouds in your photo.

Yes, I admit, for a second there, I did think I saw myself among some others in your photo. Wouldn't that have been one for the books!

Great photo.

Well, maybe next time I'll get your picture!

And, yes, there was a delay. My wife and were waiting for about an hour in a light rain to drizzle. We were glad when things improved and they could get all those balloons going. Well worth the wait though.
