'Delaware Valley White' is a Kurume hybrid and is hardy in USDA Zone 6. I have a few of them in the garden and they have experienced winter temperatures below 0°on several occasions. Considered a dwarf or semi-dwarf cultivar, they remain less than 5ft. tall, but spread about twice that, over the years. Yesterday they were picture perfect, but an overnight TS, with small hail, took away most of my Azalea blooms, except for a few Southern Indica's, that were sheltered by evergreen trees and the Satsuki hybrids, which are still in bud. A large R. canescens, still in full bloom, also looks extremely sad today! On the other hand, one late blooming R. austrinum and R. flammeum, R. periclymenoides, R alabamense and R. x 'Admiral Semmes' weren't affected, nor was R. chapmanii, just beginning to flower. R. colemanii and R. cumberlandense have had buds for weeks, but are shy about opening! Lots of strange happenings in the garden this spring, after a very long and colder that normal winter, which continued well into spring. I have planted Azaleas, both evergreen and deciduous in the springtime, but have had to pay close attention to water needs during the hot, dry summertime. I will plant Southern Indicas only in the fall, as I've experienced too many failures with Spring planting of those. MO Rb

Wetsuiter: I protected my pindo with a leaf cafe during its first winter here. Easily survived, but several of the fonds were nailed by rot as I did not cover the cage with a tarp. None the less, it recovered suprisingly fast. This past winter, I sprung for a little, portable greenhouse. I put a shop light inside with a 100 watt incandescent and a thermocube to turn it off and on automatically. The Pindo did not miss a beat. Stayed green all winter and hit the ground running in the Spring. In fact, its spreading so much, I have to procure or build something even bigger to protect it next winter. So yes, your idea would be fine. Just make sure you have a way to vent the box as it gets hot with even a glint of sunshine. No reason for that Pindo to perish.

My daughter grew Obsidian at her old house. Spectacular specimen - in a dry environment under a wide eave and morning sun..just like yours! All my dark ones thrive in hot morning sun, some in all day sun, and well drained soil. Acteas, dark ones, are so beautiful! Mine isn't that tall anymore but it has adjusted to being grown out front of the house where it is sunny, hot, dry and windy. Flowered first year and second because I faithfully watered it. No flowers since I cut off the umbellical cord but glorious foliage and texture. The foliage is darker and richer with more sun exposure, I found. I tried the second one in more shade - it developed a greener colour and as I have read, did not abide my transplanting it :( . Price is an ouch, agree! I wanted to post a photo of the polemonium foliage for you but ran out of daylight. Will do so tomorrow. Still in pot from last year.
