Joedes, I have never seen garlic sprout like that. Eat those cloves that have started to grow. The reds bulbs do look smaller but I think I can see where the cloves are forming, those would be fine to plant back this fall. general time to harvest is when there are 4 green leaves left on the plant.

They did not start noticeably earlier in the spring than other hosta, but they are hanging tough as the weather cools, even though it has been a dry fall. The last two to bloom was plantaginea (made a few seedpods) and Royal Accolade. Next year I'll be ready to take advantage of this, keeping them clustered to maximize open pollination.

Yes, you can collect all through winter as long as the seeds are on the plants. Many plants don't finish ripening their seeds until well after frost.

Upon my return home on 16 Sept I found my tomatoes, beans, and squash all killed by an early freeze. My friends in the area (who got only nipped) thought it happened on the night of Sept. 9th. Normally the first frost here is around 20 Sept. Last year there was a killing August frost here! This is "global warming"? My location is about 30 miles west of Hayward in the far NW corner of the state. Where are your locations? Thanks!
