The cost of emergeny care for dogs

My son took in an unwanted dog last year - a 2 year old Sheltie & Border collie mix.( He's still a puppy , but when this little guy gets older , he'll probably be smarter than some kids ! ) LOL Anyway .... " Bullit " is normally a hyper dog ... loves to play and run ... typical border collie . Suddenly he got lethargic ... couldn't seem to keep his balance ... didn't eat .

It was a Sunday , my son loves his dog & paniced - then took him to the Emergency vet . They took him in ..... did a boat load of tests - ended up giving him an IV ... charged $850 ...and couldn't find anything wrong. WOW

On one hand , We are all so happy to see that Bullit is fine & he got the best of care incase he was really sick ........ but on the other hand - I can't believe the cost. ( this was for just an overnight stay ) .....

What do you think of this ?

I'm glad I live in Podunk. If my dog needs care in the middle of the night, my vet will get out of bed, drive in to the office and do what needs to be done. I'll be charged the regular fee, plus a $125 surcharge and given an apology because the bill is high. Which I also give an apology for getting them out of bed. I love my vets.

i hope bullit is ok!

i had to take my senior dane to the e.r. vet in the middle of the night a few months ago...it was a "near bloat" thing. she stayed overnight, i.v. fluids, diagnostic x-rays, etc. it ended up being just over $800. i was happy to pay it since i know she got excellent care and came through it fine.

my regular vet no longer does ANY emergency work. i am seriously thinking about changing vets, for that reason.

With such a life/death decision to make, I would take the dog to another vet for a second opinion on the kidney thing, if it seems the pain is under control. I have pet insurance so that I do not have to make healthcare decisions based entirely on cost. I know that I will get at least a portion of the cost back from the insurance company. For Bina, her insurance is around $300/year. Her CT scan to diagnose her stuffed-up and snotty nose cost $2000. I got about $750 back from insurance. If I did not have the insurance, I could easily be in a situation where I had to decide that euthanasia was best. I love my dogs dearly, but I know their lifspans are short compared to ours and I know there are thousands of mutts out there waiting to fill the empty spot in my heart and home, so there is a limit on how much debt I will acrue for a dog's illness. I could not tell you right now where the limit is, but I would not feel that I was wrong to decide in favor of ending suffering instead of treating an ongoing medical problem - especially if there were other chronic problems. I think my tolerance for veterinary debt would depend on the situation with the dog and with my finances at that moment. Each situation in unique and I don't think we can judge other people's situations. You try to balance your own need for the dog, your bank account and debt tolerance, the lifespan of the dog, the pain or mortification the dog must endure, and your ability to provide needed care or not(in situations like incontinence). You do your best and that is all you can be expected to do. Unlike people, dogs have the option for euthanasia and we should not judge others if they chose it in good faith.

It is a good idea to have pet insurance if you can swing the monthly payments but it's still a gamble, not all policies are worth it. My stray cat cost me over 2K just to get her on board with all her dental problems. Eventually had them all extracted. There's always vet bills when you least expect it. We adopted a shelter cat to replace the cat DD took with her after she got married, after all he was bonded to her, LOL. Within weeks, the shelter cat got sick and DH, the cat hater, was so attached to him that he agreed to try to save his life from feline leukemia, and after transfusions and hospitalizations he didn't make it. We never complain about the expense as we consider them part of our family and we don't turn our back on them. They deserve all we can do for them.

'QQ - why would you not let someone have keys to your house? If you had a petsitter, surely it would have to be someone you trust.' I inherited this trait from my mother. She's had the same cleaning lady come once a week for the past 15 years and hasn't once left her alone in their condo. I guess I just don't trust anyone enough even though there may be many trustworthy people and have IP cameras scattered through the house anyway that I could watch remotely. 'Someone posted about a Petsmart hotel or something. Does anyone have more info? I would like to share with those who travel and would want to take their pet with them.' You've heard of Petsmart of course, well at select locations they have Petshotel (That's the brand like Banfield hospital) built in to the store. There's one near me, not the closest petsmart but the second closest and let me tell you... it is nice. You walk into a separate lavishly appointed lobby. The deluxe suites which are only $30 a night each have their own TV set and ceramic tile with real walls and a nice door. None of this chainlink, animal shelter motif... (This is for dogs by the way not dogs and people LOL)... They will come play and excercise with the dogs and even let you talk to them over the phone but the most important ammenity of all is the fact that it's staffed 24 hours a day and they have the banfield hospital on the other side of the store in case there is a medical emergency. The only feature they don't have is the web cam thing that many kennels have now but they said it's in the works. I just haven't found any boarding kennel, including my vet to come anywhere close to Petshotel for the money. So if you go on a business trip or something along those lines you could use Petshotel since it's a reputable company but if there's a petshotel where you're going you also have the flexibility to come and visit when you get a chance. sharon_ga, Don't hold out on us, is there such a place or no? So I went back to the condo today with a realtor. I think I could definitely live with the 2nd bedroom now. I would make it into a study. I was disappointed that there is no washer/dryer in the unit but it is right next to the apartment. Of course, that means there would always be folks outside my door. It was on the 20th floor so it had a great view but I was a little weirded out being on a balcony that high up. I was also curious about the windows. They looked old to me and in one window the seal was broken (foggy). I have no idea if/when that would be fixed in a high rise condo. Also, what kind of assessment would that be? It would have to just pots and pots of money. There is now an offer on the place (not mine) but now I know I could live there--preferably on a lower floor. The condo comes with doorman, concierge, gym, pool, dry cleaners and restaurant. It is close to the museum, the main library, and other amenities. Then, I looked at another building in a different area of the city. This building did not have garage parking--I would have to pay 300-400 per month to park. The apartments and the building were in much better condition but of course, the price was higher. This was a one bedroom but I really liked it! So much to consider.

Unfortunately, I think that is what emergency clinics charge. Fortunately, I haven't had to go to one in years, but they are the only place I could take a seriously ailing pet in the middle of the night, or on a weekend when my regular vet is closed.

We pay the price for them being open all hours and having all the specialized equipment necessary to run numerous tests on seriously ill pets.

I'm glad the dog is OK.

I'm glad bullit is OK.

I brought my cat to the emergency hospital on Christmas Eve. She had been throwing up bile which intensied through the previous night. She was admitted and they gave her fluids and did tests, I actually stopped them from opening her up to confirm whether it was intestinal lymphosarcoma or IBD. We checked out of the hospital on 12/26, $2,400.00 later without a diagnoses and she hasn't thrown up since. So Merry Christmas to me and I didn't need that new livingroom set anyway.

FYI, the hospital had me open a Chase credit card for animal care, which was 1 year interest free. They recently changed it to 3 months of no interest. There was no question that I wouldn't pay for her but some of my friends think I'm wacko spending so much for a cat.

Yes, Emergency Vets are very expensive. We have been through this as well. In Toronto at our "best" Emergency -the one where many specialists are located, emergency surgery will only be done with a 24 hour work-up - which sometimes your pet won't have. So they call Guelph University's Small Animal Clinic and a specialist will meed you there in the middle of the night - a 3 hour drive for us with a paralyzing dog - a nightmare - but a great neuro. You absolutely have to have a referral to do this. We had to pay 50% of estimated cost upfront before the admitting doctor would even look at him - neuro was on his way in - in cash or equivalent. Wonderful clinic at Guelph - of course I hope never to see the place again. Emergency surgery at Guelph costs as much, if not more, than surgery by a Toronto specialist. "Regular" surgery can cost less. My own vet had to hit the road at midnight with her dog because the 24 hour rule applied to her as well - which came as a shock to her. Emergency back surgery for a Dachshund runs about $8,000 Cdn. at the moment for those who might have wondered. And of course many breeds are starting to require back surgery in alarming numbers - our neuro's 2 dogs also - we were all sleeping on the floor on mattresses.

Bummer about the cost. But now you have a base line blood work up done for future reference, that is good, next, check the dogs ears periodically and clean them out....could have been dirty ears which can take a dog out of play mode quickly if they get infected
