I haven't colored eggs in years! I'll just enjoy yours.

My friend sent me this email when I asked if she and her granddaughter were coloring eggs today:

"I didn't color eggs (shells) but I made deviled eggs and colored the whites of them in pastel colors by putting them in colored water for 5 - 6 min after cutting them open and taking out the yolk. So they are blue, green and pink with the yellow filling."

Does anyone remember when we used to color eggs by putting onion skins and a little vinegar in the water while cooking them?

They came out such a pretty mottled marblized color, either using the yellow onions or red ones. My mother used to shine them up with Crisco.

No, no reason to do so. :( I really do miss the trappings of Easter baskets, egg dying, etc., though I do remember it as a hectic time. I still do have to give my dd's chocolate bunnies though.

Maxmom, I've done it that way every year since the kids moved out, except this year. I boiled some, but didn't color them. I didn't even save my onion skins.

Lovely. I did mine this morning--a dozen jumbo eggs. Did mine really pastel--just barely dipped them in and out--and they turned out lovely.

It's just not Easter without hardcooked eggs. We'll enjoy egg salad sandwiches, and DD will probably take a few eggs home with her--she loves them in tossed salad. If I end up with too many left on Tues, it will be creamed eggs for dinner to use up the last few.

Gosh, I barely do a thing for Easter. I did buy a little candy and some daffodils for my mom. I miss easter eggs, and baskets, and egg hunts. Once my kids got too old for egg hunts, we let them hide the eggs and their father and I would hunt for them. We always took out a couple light bulbs and replaced them with eggs. No one got electrocuted.

My daughter and exchange student dyed some this year. Not sure if I'm ever going to dye them when Lauren goes off to college year after next. I did wonder about that today.

Schoolhouse, I just did the same thing your friend did, like those on Pinterest. I now have blue fingers. LOL I did some eggs in blue and some in pink. I know I didn't buy the right kind of coloring....mine was a gel for frosting. I couldn't find "bottles" of pastel colors. Ask your friend where she found her pastel colors. Directions said to put just a little bit of vinegar in the water with the color, then dip the egg whites.

I don't color eggs anymore. My daughters are 23 and 24. But I am making a plate of devilled eggs as an appetizer for today's Easter Dinner. Thanks for the photos!

I already posted, but really, the age or address of one's children makes no difference--at least not to me! Mine is 32 and has been out of the house for 6 years. It's just not Easter for me without Easter Eggs.

As to colors--I used some of the paste (for the unusual colors like lavener and peach) and some of the regular food coloring for the pink, yellow and blue. You don't need expensive egg dying kits--they're just regular food coloring like you buy to tint frosting, etc, but they cost many, many times more.

To keep fingers cleaner? Use your slotted spoon for dipping. Keep a glass of water handy to dip the spoon when changing colors.

I put my cups of colors on an old jelly roll pan lined with several layers of paper towels. That saves drips of dye on my counter or table, and you can put the dyed eggs right on the paper towels to dry.

If by any chance an egg or two crack during the cooking process? I dye them yellow--that way you don't notice an odd shade running through your egg salad.

Guess these tips are a little late for this year, but maybe they'll help for next.

Around here it's not Easter if George can't dye at least a dozen eggs.

This year him and our friend got creative and created news colors using drops of this and that color. Turned out rather interesting. Thank goodness we didn't have to hide them like we used to when his daughter lived with us.

lindaohnowga - I sent her an email, but I bet she just used the old fashioned dye tablets you buy in the egg coloring kits. There are so many fancy sets now days but I just use the $.99 box. or the cheapest one. You get green,yellow,orange, blue, red, and purple.

A tablespoon of vinegar will help darken the colors, but I read on the box yesterday to not use vinegar with the red or purple. Not sure why but I took their advice. So, if you want lighter pastel colors don't add vinegar to any of the colors.

Just got an email from my friend, she said she used food coloring to dye the eggs. You know I never thought until now, food coloring would be safer to use than the dye tablets in the coloring kits wouldn't it? since a person would be eating the colored egg, not peeling off the colored shell. Hmmm.

This was the first Easter we spent with our grandchildren, age 4 and 6.
We used Koolaid........and did it outside. It was so much fun.
They are not the most beautiful eggs but the kids loved them.
They live in an apartment in NYC near Central Park so this was a new experience for them.

We did the Kool Aid method and did some in the shaving cream too. Both came out really colorful.

Since I was home in Louisiana and we have lots of little ones around we definitely had lots of Easter eggs and hunts. In our area and culture we do something I don't think anyone else does but it has been and still is what we all look forward to doing with our eggs, it is called Pock. One person holds their egg in their hand with hand firmly gripping around the egg with just the pointy end protruding, another person holding their egg in the same manner comes over and offers to Pock, then one person pocks the pointy end of their egg into the pointy end of the other egg, the egg that doesn't break is the winner. A good Pocking egg is a valuable commodity! And believe me if you have one that has won several Pocks you can quickly become the best of Pock! It's a lot of good fun for the kids and adults alike. Plus your eggs are already cracked for you to use in those deviled eggs and salads. We had a wonderful Easter with fabulous food, much of which contained colorful egg. The kids all had a blast but no one wanted to share a chocolate bunny with me.
