Battery help

I have a digital camera, but my batteries always seem to be dead. Can you experts out there recommend the best type to use? I've used regular AA and rechargables.

I just started using rechargeable batteries and they would just go dead on me without any warning so I try to remember to put them on the charger before they go dead and have no problem any more.

I kept three sets of rechargeable batteries, they served me well. I cycled them and topped off the charge regularly because they don't seem to hold a charge as long as regular AA batteries which are too expensive if you are out taking lots of photos. I do try to keep some regular ones on hand for spares just in case. If they sit around unused for a week or so, you really need to recharge them before going out with your camera.

There are more powerful rechargeable batteries out there now, haven't looked into it for awhile, maybe you could research it on the web. I bought mine at Thomas Distributing and got my daughter some higher powered ones somewhere else, can't remember the name of the site offhand. When hers are charged, they last a long time. If it matters, I might be able to find the name of the place, think Energizers are a pretty good brand, you can probably find them locally.

My charger has a feature where periodically you should condition your rechargeables; i.e., every couple months or so, drain out all the remaining charge and recharge them from scratch. I'm not sure of the why of that, but that's what was recommended so that's what I do.

Start by removing the cell caps and looking inside. Can you see liquid that is above the plates in all six cells? If five cells have liquid above the plates and one cell appears dry, then you have a bad cell and the battery is toast. If all the cells have liquid above the plates, the someone needs to at least try and recharge your battery. I've had batteries last much longer than three years so no one can say for sure that this battery is no good until an attempt has been made to recharge it so it can be tested. Once the charging has taken place, then the cell caps can be removed and a hydrometer can be used to suck the battery fluid (electrolyte) into to so that you can get a reading on the specific gravity (state of charge) in each cell. All cells should test equal or very close to equal. A wide difference in one or more cells will indicate weak or shorted cells and the battery is toast. Even if all the cells test evenly and very high, a "load test" using a special load testing instrument should be used to determine the amount of reserve power the battery has available for cranking a stubborn engine. These are the tests that need to be performed because maybe....just maybe.... the real problem is with the charging system on your Honda rider. Batteries that don't get recharged, eventually go flat and everyone just assumes that the battery is at fault. Bottom line..... you could go buy a new battery and a week from now, it will be dead as a doornail too. Then what????

Bill and ericwi, Thanks for your comments. You may have missed what I wrote above: "Used auto jumper cables to connect battery directly to starter and engine block...no help! ". I have connected the negative battery post directly to the engine block and the positive battery post directly to the starter with very heavy duty jumper cables...no crankie... By doing this, I believe, I have completely eliminated voltage drops over any of the electrical starting circuit, including 'battery post to battery terminal', 'battery terminal to cable', 'cable to other terminal' AND 'ground connection between the battery and the steel frame'.... Assuming the battery is good (which I verified by using two separate fully charged batteries) then the problem has to be in the starter or something mechanical in the engine. No?

With the new solenoid and a new key switch that pretty much leaves the PTO switch and the brake/clutch switch to test. You can test the white wires at the clutch/brake switch for the presence of 12 volts while the key is held in the start position and the PTO switch is in the engaged (blades ON) position and the clutch.brake pedal in the up position. With the PTO switch and the brake/clutch switch set as described...........only one white wire at the brake/clutch switch should be showing 12 volts (while key is in start position). If you do have 12 volts on 1 white wire at clutch/brake switch, press and hold the brake/clutch pedal down and check the other white wire for 12 volts. If no 12 volts, clutch/brake switch is defective. If you do have 12 volts on both white wires, the trouble is in the wiring that leads from the clutch/brake switch to the starter solenoid. If neither white wire at clutch/brake switch is showing 12 volts, you need to back track to the PTO switch and check the white wires on it. At the PTO switch, with the key in the start position, and PTO switch engaged as before, BOTH white wires should show 12 volts. If only 1 white wire shows 12 volts, defective PTO switch. If neither white wire on PTO switch shows 12 volts, the trouble is in the white wire between the key switch and the PTO switch.

For us, it meant the remote sensor/receiver or the switch itself had failed. We wound up getting a new fan since the fixture was built-in and couldn't be changed or inexpensively repaired. Our light didn't have a chain or anything, so we could only use the fan and forget the light until we changed it out.

If you have your EVF (Electronic View Finder) on all the time it will drain your battery faster than you know what happened.

I like to get Lit-ion re-chargable batteries. Also look for the # of "mah". This tells how long a bettery will last compared to the others, ie 1900mah will last longer than 1700mah. The difference in mah will not damage the camera. However, it is important to stay at the same voltage and amp, or very, very near what the product is labeled for. A safe bet is is always Duracell or Energizer, they test there products and you can feel safe with those brands. Check their website for batteries versus just buying from the store. They will have more option for re-chargable batteries there. Good luck.

I found that the batteries in my Fuji camera went dead very fast, no matter what type I used. The only way to make them last is to remove them as soon as you're done shooting.
