Refrigerator water filters..

.. do you change yours often? We have a Kenmore_ and I just looked at the website to find out that a filter at Sears is $39.95! I can't imagine most people changing them every 3 to 6 months (which is what they recommend) at that price. I found another place that sells them for less than half that price, so I ordered a couple from there.

I'll admit we've had this fridge_ for a couple years and never changed the filter. We don't use the water from the fridge_ much, but we do use a lot of ice.

Glenda, those 3 words came up as in-text ads when I previewed my post... I added the _'s just to see if it would make the ads go away and it did!

I hooked my Liebherr up to my under sink Everpure filter, thus eliminating the in fridge unit. Saves space and $... Not sure, but I believe the Liebherr 'change filter' light is programed to come on at six months, regardless of water usage.

Thanks for all the tips! I have access to carbon filtered water, RO water, and Arrowhead water at work. I am very picky about water and ice. Normally I don't drink much RO water as I don't taste anything but that might be perfect for making ice. I'll try filling up a empty bottle and bringing it home and making some ice. I've tried the ice at work. There are 2 GE canisters under the sink which provide carbon filtered water to the fridge ice maker. During the summer usage is really high and you are lucky if there is enough ice to fill up a glass. That ice was a bit better then the ice from my fridge but it tasted similar. Mostly I drink the Arrowhead water as it has a pretty good flavor. Some more background info. I've never come across any ice at other people's homes in Southern California that I liked. I tried the bagged ice for sale at the local supermarket and that tasted similar to restaurant ice. Anybody know how they filter the water for the ice you get out of the soda machine at restaurants?

I can't suggest any of what you asked but have an alternative idea for you that I am using. Install a full size filter in a cabinet above / beside the fridge and hook the fridge up to that. My concerns about the fridge filters are the size, level and price. The one that comes with my fridge can block 5 or large micron particles, removes some bio contaminants and has to replaced every 3 months at $35 a piece. The replacement can last up to a year, costs $32 for a replacement, can remove 1 micron or larger particles and removes most bio contaminants. It has been about a year since we looked at the alternatives but I just don't fridge filters are practical. I see them more as a reoccuring money stream for the fridge makers.

I have the Kenmore as well but I don't change the filters that often either--too expensive. Would you mind sharing the site for the cheaper filters?

We have a Kenmore refrigerator, and when we tried to not put in a new filter, the icemaker stopped working. The filters are $49.95, plus $10 shipping, at Sears.

I went to Discount Filter Store and got two filters for a total of $63, after shipping.

Betsy, here is the link I ordered from. This is my first order so I can't vouch for the service yet.

There were a couple cheaper places, but the shipping was really high. Shipping at Kleen Water was $6.95 for me.

The next fridge I get is not going to have the ice/water door filter. The ice gets clogged and I seldom use it, plus it's a pain to keep clean. I paid $97 to replace the filter and the water won't work without it.

I buy mine off of Ebay. I change them out usually 2x a year..depends on how much they've been "cleaning/working" on the well..

I also grew tired over the cost of replacing the filters. After the last time the red light came on warning to change the filter. I discovered the filter can be removed without effecting the water or ice dispenser in the door. Reset the indicator light back to green and has been working great without filter for over a year!

I try to stretch it as long as I can. It usually will make it just 6 months. I get my filters from filters fast, or sometimes on ebay. Sometimes there is a discount code, check google for it. I try not to pay over $36. at the most.

You know you need to change the filter when your ice gets hollow.

We have a KA frige. Bought it in 1991 when we bought this house. The first time that filter got changed was last year! We never use the water feature, just the ice. And even that doesn't get ussed like it used to. Then we couldn't figure out why the ice tasted yucky. It took a while before we remembered there even WAS a filter for it. I guess ours is in the line, not the frige, cause DH didn't move the frige or anything to replace it. I bought it at home depot for under $20. Ice tastes fine now.

Good info! I can tell when our filter runs out even without the light. Tap water tastes terrible in FL. It tasted bad when we lived in GA too. When we were in the GA mountains, we brought some water home because it was so good!

We were told to change our filter when the light comes on which should be every 6 mos to a year. We've had our KitchenAid for 3 years now and it never came on. I did buy a new filter though, at Sears, at $50 a few months ago. Just haven't changed it. We use the inside water dispenser ALL THE TIME, but not the ice too much as we don't put ice in our daily water/drinks.

I haven't noticed a change in the taste, but after 3 years, I suppose it's time, especially since it's sitting in the drawer waiting installation.

If you don't change the filter regularly, remove it. If you don't change the filter you are adding pollution to your water by running it through all the gunk the filter has collected.

I change our filter once a year. There are just two of us using the water/ice, and our city water is so good we *probably* don't really need the filter!

My fridge has those features but we've never used them or even hooked them up.To do so,we'd have to re-plumb our whole kitchen as we live in an older house(50's) which wasn't designed for things like that.Besides our water is nasty,we don't even drink it.
